11.javelin throwing technique a biomechanical studyAlexander Decker
This document is a research paper that analyzes the biomechanics of javelin throwing technique. It describes a study that filmed 6 javelin throwers from Aligarh Muslim University in India using high-speed cameras. The study found a significant positive correlation between throwing distance and initial javelin velocity at release. It found insignificant correlations between distance and other release parameters like angle, height, etc. The results suggest throwers should achieve high acceleration during their run-up and carry the javelin at optimal angles to maximize distance.
Javelin throwing technique a biomechanical studyAlexander Decker
This study analyzed the biomechanics of the javelin throwing technique through high-speed video analysis of 6 athletes. The study found:
1) A significant positive correlation between throwing distance and initial javelin velocity at release.
2) Insignificant correlations between throwing distance and release angle, attitude angle, attack angle, and release height.
3) Positive significant correlations between throwing distance and approach run velocity, pull distance, and forward trunk rotation angle.
The results suggest the most important factor for distance is high initial velocity, which is influenced by fast approach, leg thrust, and optimal carry angle during the last strides.
Three dimensional biomechanical analysis of the drag in penalty corner drag f...Alexander Decker
This document analyzes the biomechanics of the penalty corner drag flick in field hockey through 3D motion analysis. It studied four specialized male drag flickers from two universities. Video analysis captured joint angles, velocities and accelerations during the drag flick. Statistical analysis found several kinematic variables differed significantly between the universities, including drag distance, shoulder and pelvis linear velocities, and angular velocities and accelerations of various joints. This suggests differences in drag flick technique influence accuracy. The study aimed to provide biomechanical information to help coaches and players enhance drag flick performance.

Crack Detection for Various Loading Conditions in Beam Using Hilbert – Huang ...IOSR Journals
The document discusses crack detection in beams using the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT). It first describes modeling a cracked beam using finite element analysis and modeling the crack as a rotational spring. Vibration analysis is then performed on simply supported, fixed-fixed, free-free, and cantilever beams. HHT is applied to the beam responses to determine the crack location based on changes in the spatial variation of the transformed response. Both numerical simulation and experiments show HHT can effectively analyze the beams and detect cracks. The study validates the technique analytically and experimentally, finding good agreement with established models.

This document discusses fatigue analysis and fracture mechanics in engineering. It provides an overview of BiSS operations in testing services and collaborations in various industries. It then summarizes that fatigue analysis involves accounting for variable load amplitudes and stresses through methods like rainflow cycle counting. Fracture mechanics characterizes crack stresses using stress intensity factors determined from geometry and materials toughness testing. Finally, it emphasizes that structural integrity assurance requires considering long-term material behavior under service loads to ensure safe and economical operations over a structure's lifetime.
Abstract: Ontologies are used in numerous research disciplines and commercial applications to uniformly and semantically annotate real-world objects. Due to a rapid development of application domains the corresponding ontologies are changed frequently to include up-to-date knowledge. These changes dramatically influence dependent data as well as applications/systems, for instance, ontology mappings, that semantically interrelate ontologies. The talk will give an overview on evolution of ontologies and ontology-based mappings.

It discusses the design of new joints, failure of existing joints in earthquakes, and general response characteristics including stiffness, strength, and deformation capacity. It also examines interior and exterior joint details, the effect of axial loads, and plastic drift capacity. The document provides recommended envelope relations for joint strength and stiffness based on experimental data. It concludes with references to further research on modeling joint behavior and fragility.
In this lab, students tested the shear strength of two adhesives - cyanoacrylate and epoxy - using a testing machine. The maximum shear stress of each adhesive was calculated from the test data. Confidence intervals were also constructed for the shear stress results. The lab values were smaller than literature values, likely due to differences in specimen preparation between a student lab and professional testing. Epoxy was found to have a higher shear strength than cyanoacrylate based on the results.
Computationally Efficient Protocols to Evaluate the Fatigue Resistance of Pol...npaulson
Evaluation and selection of polycrystalline microstructures for
fatigue resistance through computational means is hampered by the high cost of CPFEM for elastic-plastic analysis. In this work, novel approaches are employed to compare the projected HCF (and LCF) resistance of alpha-beta titanium microstructures with a variety of textures and boundary conditions based on mesoscopic FIPs. Specifically, a materials knowledge system approach for modeling of local grain responses based on spatial statistics is developed to quickly evaluate strain fields for a set of statistical volume elements (SVEs) representing a particular microstructure. Then, an explicit integration scheme (or a calibrated function) is developed to estimate the plastic strain in each voxel, allowing for the calculation of FIPs for each SVE and the evaluation of the robustness of each microstructure for HCF applications. This data science approach is orders of magnitude faster than traditional CPFEM methods, making it possible to compare large numbers of microstructures and identify those most suitable.
This document summarizes a study on biofilm detachment through a combined experimental and numerical approach. The study characterized the mechanical properties and failure behavior of biofilms through rheometry, indentation, retraction, and bulk failure tests. A finite volume method was used to model biofilm as a viscoelastic solid and simulate interfacial separation under fluid shear stress using a cohesive zone model. The study found that biofilms have low elastic modulus, strain rate dependent properties, and interface failure is influenced more by bulk deformation than pure separation energy. Fluid structure interaction simulations showed biofilm detachment occurred above a certain wall shear stress.
The document summarizes a presentation on acoustic modal analysis of 3D hydrofoils. It discusses degrees of freedom in single and multiple degree of freedom systems, free vibration analysis of SDOF and MDOF systems, dynamic analysis techniques including modal analysis, and determining the natural frequency of hydrofoils through modal analysis. It also covers fluid structure interaction, meshing, stress analysis theories, and presents results of modal and stress analyses of different hydrofoil profiles.
ASSESSING THE EFFECT OF UNICONDYLAR KNEE ARTHROPLASTY ON PROXIMAL TIBIA BONE ...ijbesjournal
ABSTRACT
In order to develop computational models of implanted constructs to predict prosthesis performance, robust experimental tests need to be devised. In the case of unicondylar knee arthroplasty (UKA), whereuptake of the procedure has been relatively low compared to traditional total knee arthroplasty techniques, computational modelling can give an insight into the factors affect theperformance of UKA if verified withappropriate, preferably data rich, experimental simulations. In the present work, an image based strainanalysis technique was applied for the assessment of the effect of UKA implantation on the strainsdeveloped in cortical bone of the proximal tibia. The results indicated the presence of increased strains inthe proximal portion of the bone, which could be exacerbated in the case of poor implant positioning, or for patients with diminished bone quality.

Comparing Direct and Indirect Representations for Environment-Specific Robot ...Jack Collins
This document compares direct and indirect representations for evolving robot leg designs suited for specific environments. It finds that an indirect representation using compositional pattern-producing networks outperforms a direct Bezier spline representation. Experiments evolving legs for soil, gravel, and fluid terrains showed the indirect approach achieved statistically significantly higher fitness. Future work is proposed to analyze structural integrity and validate designs in the real world.
The document summarizes a presentation on soft dielectric elastomer actuators capable of complex 3D deformation. It discusses the motivation to develop flexible soft actuators inspired by nature. The presentation covers actuator design and fabrication using dielectric elastomers sandwiched between compliant electrodes. Analytical models and finite element analysis are used to characterize actuator performance and deformation mechanisms. Surface effects and localized deformation around stiffeners are analyzed, and their impact on actuation is revealed.
“Ecological foundations of human motion modelWangdo Kim
Human movement control is assumed localized in internal structures. In this vein, nerve system controls individual muscle, which is basis of conventional approach. The new approach is rather a process is distributed over the performer and environment system; the interaction from individual and the environment regulates movements through muscle synergy or co-activated muscles.
Ash Abel completed a summer internship with Clemson University's Mechanical Engineering department. Their main project involved vibration and acoustic testing of a 7.5MW test bench that emitted uncomfortable noise levels. Through research, testing, and analysis, Ash identified possible causes such as loose connections and resonance. They designed tests using accelerometers and microphones to analyze vibration and acoustic data. Potential solutions like shortening the support beam or changing its cross-section were modeled and tested. Analysis showed modifying connections and the beam's design could effectively reduce noise levels. Ash also assisted engineers and created support materials during their internship.

Examples demonstrate how to fit linear regression models to data and evaluate model results.
The document describes a 3D numerical model developed to better understand freckle formation in metallic alloys during solidification. Freckles are channel-like micro-segregation defects that degrade mechanical properties. The model uses lattice Boltzmann and cellular automaton methods to simulate convective fluid flow, heat transfer, and solute redistribution during solidification. Simulation results show that buoyancy-induced fluid flow alters dendrite growth kinetics and solute distribution, potentially leading to freckle formation through competition between dendrites.
This document describes a finite element based micromechanics model to predict the stress relaxation behavior of woven fabric composites. The model represents the woven fabric as a repeating unit cell with viscoelastic tows embedded in a matrix. Properties of the constituents are determined through experiments and micromechanical modeling. The unit cell model is verified against experimental flexural tests. Stress distributions within the model agree with experiments over time, capturing the stress relaxation behavior of the composite. The model provides an accurate way to predict stress relaxation without extensive material testing.

Embedded machine learning-based road conditions and driving behavior monitoringIJECEIAES
Car accident rates have increased in recent years, resulting in losses in human lives, properties, and other financial costs. An embedded machine learning-based system is developed to address this critical issue. The system can monitor road conditions, detect driving patterns, and identify aggressive driving behaviors. The system is based on neural networks trained on a comprehensive dataset of driving events, driving styles, and road conditions. The system effectively detects potential risks and helps mitigate the frequency and impact of accidents. The primary goal is to ensure the safety of drivers and vehicles. Collecting data involved gathering information on three key road events: normal street and normal drive, speed bumps, circular yellow speed bumps, and three aggressive driving actions: sudden start, sudden stop, and sudden entry. The gathered data is processed and analyzed using a machine learning system designed for limited power and memory devices. The developed system resulted in 91.9% accuracy, 93.6% precision, and 92% recall. The achieved inference time on an Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense with a 32-bit CPU running at 64 MHz is 34 ms and requires 2.6 kB peak RAM and 139.9 kB program flash memory, making it suitable for resource-constrained embedded systems.
Using recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) for pavements is crucial to achieving sustainability. Implementing RCA for new pavement can minimize carbon footprint, conserve natural resources, reduce harmful emissions, and lower life cycle costs. Compared to natural aggregate (NA), RCA pavement has fewer comprehensive studies and sustainability assessments.
Electric vehicle and photovoltaic advanced roles in enhancing the financial p...IJECEIAES
Climate change's impact on the planet forced the United Nations and governments to promote green energies and electric transportation. The deployments of photovoltaic (PV) and electric vehicle (EV) systems gained stronger momentum due to their numerous advantages over fossil fuel types. The advantages go beyond sustainability to reach financial support and stability. The work in this paper introduces the hybrid system between PV and EV to support industrial and commercial plants. This paper covers the theoretical framework of the proposed hybrid system including the required equation to complete the cost analysis when PV and EV are present. In addition, the proposed design diagram which sets the priorities and requirements of the system is presented. The proposed approach allows setup to advance their power stability, especially during power outages. The presented information supports researchers and plant owners to complete the necessary analysis while promoting the deployment of clean energy. The result of a case study that represents a dairy milk farmer supports the theoretical works and highlights its advanced benefits to existing plants. The short return on investment of the proposed approach supports the paper's novelty approach for the sustainable electrical system. In addition, the proposed system allows for an isolated power setup without the need for a transmission line which enhances the safety of the electrical network
Harnessing WebAssembly for Real-time Stateless Streaming PipelinesChristina Lin
