MonsoonrainshaveprovedtooheavyinPakistan,damagingnearly1mhectaresofcrops,buttoolightinneighboringIndia, promptingaforecastofa9m-tonnedropinproductionofsummer-sowngrains.FloodsinPakistanwhicharereportedtohavekilledmorethan300people,anddisplacedmorethan500,000,causedseveredamagetoagriculture,aswellashousesandroads,theUnitedNationsFoodandAgricultureOrganizationsaid.About986,000hectaresofstandingcrops, particularlypaddyfieldsinlow-lyingareas,havebeenadverselyaffected,theFAOsaid,equivalenttosome11%oftheareaplantedwiththemainsummer,orkharif,crops.Theseincludecotton,sugarcaneandrice,whichareanimportantsourceofforeignexchangeearnings,andarecashcropsforsmallfarmers,theagencysaid.Indeed,Pakistanistheworld'sfourth-rankedriceexporter,behindIndia,ThailandandVietnam,andthefourthbiggestproducerofcottonforitssizeabletextileindustry,asignificantemployerandsourceofexports.
Chinawillnotincreaseitscottonimportquotafor2015,inabidtoencouragetextilefirmstobuymoredomesticcotton,thecountry'stopeconomicplannersaidMonday.Besidesanannualimportquotaof894,000tonsofcottonthatChinapromisedunderitsWTOcommitments,noadditionalquotawillbeissuedfor2015,LiuXiaonan,deputyheadoftheeconomyandtradedepartmentundertheNationalDevelopmentandReformCommission(NDRC),toldapressconferenceinBeijing.Importedcottonwithinthequotaenjoysalowtariffof1percent,buttheimportsbeyondthequotaaresubjecttoupto40percentduty.WeexpectthenewquotapolicywilllowerChina'scottonimports,whichhitarecordhighof5.14milliontonsin2012.
Mustardseedfutureshavewitnessedstockiestbuyingfromlowerlevelsduetorecedingstocksinlocalmandiesalongwithweakproductionestimatesofkharifoilseedsinthecurrentyear.TheNCDEXfuturesadded1.25percenttoday.Aspertradesources, around47lakhtonnesofmustardseedhavebeenarrivedatmajormandiesandaround42lakhtonneshavebeencrushedbymillers. Thesourcesaddedaround20lakhtonnesofstocksarecurrentlyavailableinthelocalmandiestocaterthedemandfornextsixmonth,tillThepriceswerealsosupportedbyweakproductionestimatesofkharifoilseeds.Asperthelatest1stAdvanceEstimatesreleasebyDepartmentofAgriculture&Cooperationon19thSeptember,totalproductionofkharifOilseedsisexpectedtodeclineto19.66milliontonnesTheNCDEXMustardseedOctoberFuturessettledatRs3651perquintal,up1.26percenttoday.
Shortcoveringwasseeninguarseedduetoanticipationofweakproductioninthecurrentyearalongwithstrongexportdemandinlocalmandies.Aspermarketsources,thetotalguarseedproductioninthecurrentyearisreportedaround12.5milliontonnes,downalmost43percentfromthelastyear.ThisismainlyontheaccountofweakrainfallinmajorproducingstatessuchasHaryanaandRajasthan.Thus,poorproductionestimatehaspromptedbargainbuyingfromlowerlevels.Thepriceswerealsowellsupportedbystrongdemandbyexporters.ThelatestdatacompiledbyAPEDA, thetotalexportsGuargumin2012-14werereported6.01lakhtonnesagainst4.06lakhtonnesofthelastyear,added32percent. Tradersexpectedthatexportdemandwillremainbuoyantinthecurrentseasonaspricesarestilltradingaroundpreviousyearlevels.

CottonmarketnoticedweaktoneonTuesday.Accordingtothemarketparticipants,cottonproductionislikelytobearound40millionbales, around8%higherthanthepreviousyear.DeficitrainfallduringtheKharifsowingperiodhasforcedthefarmerstoplantcottoninsteadoftheothercropswhichrequiresmorewater,whichhasstretchedthecottonacreageinthisseason.AsperthelatestestimatesreleasedbyMinistryofAgriculture, around125.75lakhhectareofareahasbeensownundercottonthisyearasonSeptember22,around10.69%higherthanthepreviousyear,whenitwas113.60lakhhectaresduringthesameperiod.MinistryofTextilewithallianceofDepartmentofAgriculturehasstartedreviewingthecroprelatedandothersupportivemeasurestoenhancethecropyield.Itincludesputtingrestrictiononseedvarietiesanddevelopmentinseedtechnologyadoptedbyprocessofreplacementandnotbyaddition.IndiaisexpectedtosurpassChinaincottonproductionbytheupcomingcropseason.
