IndiamaybecomethelargestexporterofricenextyearamidhigherdemandanticipatedfromAfricanandMiddleEastcountriesandcompetitiveprices."Incalendaryear2015,Indiashouldemergeasthelargestexporterofrice—bothbasmatiandnon-basmati.From4milliontonnesofannualexportofnon-basmatirice,weshouldbeabletoexport7milliontonnes. SurplusricestockpilesinthecountryandimprovedmethodsofproductionhavehelpedpositionIndiacompetitivelyintheglobalricemarket.Withthepaddyharvestingseasonhavingstartedearlierthismonth,localricepricesareexpectedtofallfurther.Indianparboilednon-basmatiricewasquotedat$400pertonne,whichwas$10-15lessthantherateinThailand, givingitanedgeintheAfricanmarket.Inthewhitericeexportcategory,theIndianpriceat$360-370atonnewascompetitivecomparedwithratesinPakistanandVietnam,TheAllIndiaRiceExportersAssociation,agroupofbasmatiricetraders,Weshouldseeaminimumriseof5%thisyearfromcurrent4milliontonnes,ordersfromSaudiArabiaandEuropewouldbeginbyDiwaliwhenharvestingpicksup.
Worldcommoditypriceshaveedgedlowerinrecentmonths. Thedeclinehasbeenledbya9%dropinfoodprices,owingmostlytoimprovedsupplyprospects,accordingtothelatestWorldEconomicOutlookreleasedbytheInternationalMonetaryFund(IMF).Theglobalfoodpriceshavedeclined9%sinceMarch2014onanimprovedglobalproductionoutlook.However,pricesofafewfoodcommoditieshavemovedhigher.ThepricesofArabicacoffeebeanshavesoaredbecauseofaseveredroughtinBrazil.Weatherconditionshavebeenfavorablesofarinthecurrentharvestyear,andbumperharvestsareexpectedforthemaincerealandoilseedcrops, notedtheIMF.
SteadytrendwasseeninChanafuturesduetopossibilityofweakproductioninthecurrentyearcoupledwithlimitedkharifpulsessuppliesinlocalmandies.TheNCDEXfuturesswelledby0.28percenttoday.ThemarketsourcessuggestedthatcropdiversificationbycultivatorscoupledwithpoorreservoirsituationwillreducetheChanaacreageinthecurrentyear.Tradersareexpecting10-15%declineintotalacreageinthecurrentyear.Thepriceswerealsoencouragedbylimitedkharifsuppliesinlocalmandies.Asperthe1stAdvanceEstimatesofProductionofmajorKharifcropsfor2014-15bytheDepartmentofAgriculture& Cooperation,theKharifPulsesproductionisestimatedat5.20milliontonnesasagainsttheirproductionof6.02milliontonnesduringKharif2013-14.Thisismainlyduetopoorsowingacreageinthecurrentyear.TheNCDEXfuturesincreasedby0.24percenttocloseatRs2854perquintal.Theopeninterestadded0.80percentindicatingfreshbuyingbytraders.
Brazil'ssugarexportswillfallfurtherthanhadbeenthought,toasix-yearlow,thankstoadrought-hitcaneharvest,accordingtoalatestupdatefromtheUSDepartmentofAgriculturebureauinBrasilia.Brazil,thetopglobalsugarproducerandexporter,willexport24million(m)tonnesofsugarin2014-15(MaytoApril). Thisrepresentsdropofnearly8.40%comparedtothelastseason. TheUSDAhasearlierexpectedthatexportswouldfallto25.3mtonnesin2014-15.Thecurrentestimatesarethelowestinsixyears.
