MonsoonrainswillretreatnextweekfromIndia'sgrainbowlinthenorthwest,althoughpossiblerainfallinitscentralandsouthernregionscouldstillhelpsummercrops.Grainoutputfromtheharvestofsummercropsinoneoftheworld'sleadingconsumersandproducersisforecasttobelowerthanlastyear'sduetoaweakstartoftheJune-Septemberrainyseason.Buttheharvestwillbeadequatetoallowthegovernmenttocontinueapolicyofunrestrictedriceexportsandtoreininfoodpricesintheworld'ssecondmostpopulouscountry.
Theministryofagriculture’sFirstAdvancedEstimatefor2014-15forecastkhariffoodgrainsoutputat120.27milliontonnes,around7.5percentlowerthantherecordproductionat129.24mtinthesameseasonlastyear.Thegovernmenthassetariceproductiontargetfortherabiseasonat14mt,ascomparedto14.85mtinthepreviousseason,accordingtotheFourthAdvancedEstimate.Wheatproductionisfixedat94mt, asagainst95.51mtthepreviousyear.“Afteradelayedstart,theoverallmonsoonrainfallhasremained11percentdeficientthisseason,resultingina3.5percentlowercoverageareaunderkharif.Thetotalareaunderkharifcropsfellto9.99mnhathisseason,comparedwith10.37mhaearlier.States,therefore, shouldbereadywithhigheravailabilityofseedsandfertiliser,” saidJSSandhu,agriculturecommissioner.Erraticrainfallanddryspellsinseveralpartsofthecountrywillalsoimpacttheproduction.However,thesearepreliminaryestimatesanddonottakeintoaccountthepositiveimpactofrainthismonth. Also,frompastexperience,thefirstadvanceestimatesreportedbystatesaregenerallyconservativeandsubsequentlyundergoupwardrevision.
Castorseedsowingispoisedtobreach1mnhamarkthisyearduetostrongprogressofmonsoon.Theseedfurtherbenefitedasgroundnutfarmersswitchedtocastorseedfarming.Accordingtotheagricultureministry’sdata,castorseedhasbeensownon927,000hectaresacrossthecountryasonSeptember4.Lastyear,totalsowingwason916,000hectares.Inthecorrespondingperiodin2013,castorseedhadbeensownon755,000hectares.Thereisanuptickof11,000hectaresandislikelytowitnessmoresurge.Asperstate-wisedata,Gujarathassowncastorseedin637,500hectaresfrom520,500hectaresasonSeptember1.Theareaincreasedfrom149,000hectarestofrom148,000hectaresinRajasthan.Butmovingtosouthadeclineinareacanbewitnessed.InAndhraPradesh, includingthenewly-createdTelangana,castorsowinghasplungedto101,000hectaresfrom153,000hectaresayearago.
ChanafuturestradedwithapositivebiasonFridaysupportedbylowerlevelbuyingandfestivedemand.ChanaOctobercontractrose0.5%toRs2808onIndia'sNationalCommodity&DerivativeExchange.Higherimportsofyellowpeas,comfortableChanastocksandbetterthanexpectedkharifpulsessowingmaykeeppricesunderdownsidepressure.However,lowerleveldemandaswellasfestivebuyingmaysupportpricesatlowerlevels.CCEAincreasedtheMSPofturanduradbyRs.50toRs.4,350each,whiletheMSPofmoongwasincreasedbyRs.100toRs.4,600/qtl.
