ElectionstotheMaharashtraassemblyexpectedtobeannouncedatanytime,theperformerSwabhimaniShetkariSanghatana,anallyoftheBJPattheCentreandinthestate, organizedprotestsinNashikdistrictagainstpoliciesoftheUniongovernmentthathavehelpedtotameonionprices. FarmersandtradershadexpectedonionpricestoincreaseinOctober,givingthemgoodreturnslikeinthepreviousyear. However,theCentralgovernmentliberalizedimportsofthecommodityinabidtocurbpricesfromrising.Pricesofpomegranates,anothercashcropinnorthMaharashtra,havecrashed,addingtothewoesoffarmers.AlthoughtheSanghatanaispartofthegovernmentthattookdecisionstokeeponionpricesundercheck,thepartyinsiststhattheinterestsoffarmersareprimary.
Onions,pomegranatesandgrapesarethecashcropsinnorthMaharashtra.Thereisresentmentamongfarmersaspricesofonionsandpomegranateshavedroppedtolessthanhalfofwhattheywerelastyear.Afterrising80percentinJune,onionpriceshaveeasedsincethecommoditywasbroughtunderthepurviewofstockholdinglimitsoftheEssentialCommoditiesActandthegovernmentsetaminimumpriceforexportsofthecommodity.Insteadofmakingonionscheaperforconsumers, thegovernmentshouldtellthemtoeatlessonions,“WithcroplossescausedbyhailstormsinAprilandMayand30percentdamageinstorage,farmersstandtomakelossesifpricesdonotincreaseinSeptember-October.theavailabilityofonionsinthemarkethadincreased."Ascomparedto55,000quintalsarrivalinthemonthofSeptemberlastyear,thearrivalofonionsinthefirsteightdaysofSeptemberthisyearis75,000quintals.
GuargumpricesdroppedbyRs.280toRs.16,000perquintalinfuturestradingafterspeculatorslocked-ingainsathigherlevels.AttheNationalCommodityandDerivativesExchangecounter,GuargumfordeliveryinDecembershedRs.280,or1.72percenttoRs.16,000perquintal,withanopeninterestof16,020lots.Also,most-activedeliveryinOctobermonthlostRs.250,or1.53percenttoRs.16,110perquintal,inanopeninterestof16,110lots.off-loadingofpositionsbyspeculatorsatprevailinglevelsandincreasedsuppliesagainstslackeneddemandinthespotmarkets,mainlyledtothefallinGuargumpricesatfuturestrade.
