India'sSouthWestmonsoonendeditsstreakonTuesdaywithashortfallofaround12%.Despitethedeficittheslowfinishofthemonsoonislikelytobetterthesoilmoistureandsowingprospectsforrabicrops.“Therainfallreceivedduringtheseasoniswithintheforecastlimits,”accordingtoIMD.Themonsoonseasonthisyearwastheworstinfiveyears.Thefarmsectoraccountsfor14percentofthenationaleconomyandhalfofIndia'sfarmlandlacksirrigation.ThismakesthemonsoonvitalforIndia.Themonsoonalsoimpactsthefoodpricestherebyinfluencingtheinflationrateofthecountry."Grainsuppliesareunlikelytodroptoalevelthatwouldtriggerdouble-digitinflation,“Meanwhile,IndianCottonFederationhassaidrainshavebeenabundantinmostofthecottongrowingareas.However,incertainpartsofRajasthanandHaryana,theremayhavebeensomedamagestothecottoncrop.TheAssociationsaidnewcropBunnyisarrivinginverysmallquantitiesinsomepocketsofPunjab,HaryanaandKarnataka.Averagekappasarrivalsarearound10,000balesaday,includingnewcropasperreports.FreshlyharvestedpaddyhasstartedarrivinginthemarketsofPunjabandHaryanawhilelaterainshavehelpedboosttheareaunderthecroptomorethanlastyear'slevels.Sowingareaofkharifcropsshowedasteadyincreaseduringthisweek.India'stotalkhariffoodgrainsoutputprojectionsfor2014-15isdownby8.97milliontonnesduetotheimpactoferraticrainfallactivitywhichputdentonacreageandproductivity.Productionofrice, coarsecereals,oilseeds,cottonandsugarcanearealsosettodecline.TotalproductionofKhariffoodgrainsisestimatedat120.27milliontonnesascomparedtorecordproductionof129.24milliontonnesin2013-14.
Paddyprocurementfromthe2014-15kharifcrop,scheduledtocommencefromWednesday,isexpectedtofallbehindthetarget. TheUnionfoodministryputthetargetat30milliontonnesatameetingthisMondayontheissue,aslightrevisionfromthe30.5mtprojectedearlier.Sourcesinvariousprocurementagenciessaytheactualfiguremightbe27.5-28mtThereasonisn'tonlyduetoadeficiencyinmonsoonrain.InPunjab,about300,000hectareshasbeendivertedtobasmatifromnon-basmatithisseason,owingtohigherreturnfortheformer.Thiscouldbringdownthepaddy(non- basmati)productionbyclosetoamilliontonnes,sayofficialsintheagriculturedepartment.ApolicychangeinAndhraPradesh,underwhichthelevyriceobligationhasbeenreducedfrom75percentto25percent,wouldalsomakeadentinprocurement.Levyriceistheportion,millersarerequiredtoprovidetothegovernmentattheMinimumSupportPrice.Themillerswillnowbuylessbutgovernmentagencieswillhavetogearupoperationsandtherecouldbeanadjustmentlaginthis,hamperingtheprocurement,saidanofficialinFoodCorporationofIndia(FCI).
Corianderpricesfellby0.87percentonWednesdayattheNationalCommodity&DerivativesExchangeLimited(NCDEX)astheadequatestocksavailabilityinthephysicalmarketputpressureoncorianderprices.AttheNCDEX,corianderfuturesforOctober2014contractweretradingatRs.12,068perquintal,downby0.64percent,afteropeningatRs.12,123againstthepreviousclosingpriceofRs.12,146.Ittouchedtheintra-daylowofRs.11,993tillthetrading.Sentimentweakenedfurtherasspeculatorsreducedtheirpositionsonthebackofsluggishdemandinthemarket.CorianderiscommoninSouthAsian,MiddleEastern,CentralAsian, Mediterranean,Indian,Tex-Mex,LatinAmerican,Portuguese, Chinese,African,andScandinavian.
