This document discusses various odontogenic cysts and tumors that affect the jaw bones. It describes the key features of common odontogenic cysts such as radicular cysts, dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, and lateral periodontal cysts. It also summarizes common odontogenic tumors including ameloblastoma, odontoma, ameloblastic fibroma, adenomatoid odontogenic tumor, odontogenic myxoma, and cementoblastoma. These lesions are uniquely derived from dental tissues and often present as painless jaw swellings that are discovered on radiographs.
This document defines and classifies different types of cysts that can occur in the oral cavity. It discusses epithelial cysts, which make up over 50% of oral cysts and includes radicular, dentigerous, and odontogenic keratocysts. Nonepithelial cysts are also mentioned. Specific cysts like paradental, nasopalatine, and solitary bone cysts are defined. Treatment options for jaw cysts include enucleation, marsupialization, a combination of both, and enucleation with curettage.

Differential diagnosis and management of radiolucent lesionsAamirr Xeb
This document discusses the differential diagnosis and management of radiolucent lesions. It begins by listing various potential diagnoses for periapical and pericoronal radiolucencies. It then discusses giant cell lesions, fibro-osseous lesions, and odontogenic tumors. The management section describes the therapeutic goals of surgical procedures and details various surgical techniques used to treat oral lesions, including enucleation, marsupialization, enucleation with curettage, and resection. It provides indications, advantages, and disadvantages of each technique.
Cysts of the jaw can be classified into three main types:
1. Epithelial cysts, which are further divided into odontogenic cysts that arise from tooth development and non-odontogenic cysts. Common odontogenic cysts include dentigerous cysts and odontogenic keratocysts.
2. Non-epithelial cysts such as solitary bone cysts and aneurysmal bone cysts.
3. Soft tissue cysts like dermoid cysts and thyroglossal tract cysts.
Dentigerous cysts form due to fluid accumulation between reduced enamel epithelium and the enamel surface of an impacted tooth. Odontogenic keratocyst
- The patient, a 55-year-old male, presented with a painful swelling on the left mandibular area.
- Radiographs revealed an unilocular radiolucency in the area, and the patient underwent surgical enucleation of a radicular cyst.
- Radicular cysts originate from epithelial residues in the periodontal ligament following pulpal necrosis and periapical inflammation. They are usually asymptomatic unless secondarily infected, as seen in this patient.
There are several types of odontogenic cysts that can develop:
1) A periapical cyst develops from a periapical granuloma caused by degradation products from a nonvital tooth.
2) A residual cyst can develop months to years after a tooth extraction if the cyst lining is incompletely removed.
3) Dentigerous cysts develop from proliferation of the enamel organ remnant surrounding an unerupted tooth.
The document discusses several types of odontogenic cysts that can occur in the jaw bones, which arise from tissues involved in tooth development. It describes radicular/apical cysts, which often form from inflammation caused by a non-vital tooth and residual cysts which can form after incomplete removal of an original cyst. Dentigerous cysts form around the crown of an unerupted tooth, while odontogenic keratocysts arise from the dental lamina. Lateral periodontal cysts are thought to arise from epithelial rests along tooth roots. Key features and characteristics of each cyst type are provided.
The document discusses various odontogenic cysts and tumors that may present to otolaryngologists. It describes the histology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment for conditions such as radicular cysts, dentigerous cysts, ameloblastoma, calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumors, and cementoblastomas. Odontogenic lesions are uniquely derived from tissues involved in tooth development and can cause symptoms like pain, swelling, or tooth displacement.
This document discusses the surgical management of odontogenic cysts. It describes different flap techniques used such as trapezoidal, triangular, envelope, and semilunar flaps. It also discusses the surgical procedures for enucleation and marsupialization of cysts. Enucleation involves complete removal of the cyst sac while marsupialization creates a window to drain the cyst contents and suture the cyst wall to heal. The steps for each procedure are outlined including reflection of flaps, removal of bone, draining of cyst, and suturing.

It provides wide access to all areas of the maxilla. The incision line is drawn through the vermillion border along the filtrum of the lip, extending around the base of the nose along the facial nasal groove. It then extends infraorbitally below the cilium to the lateral canthus. Tarsorrhaphy sutures are placed in the eyelid. The incision is made through the skin and subcutaneous tissue along the nose, and the full thickness upper lip is transsected with ligation of the labial artery

This document provides clinical, radiographic, and histopathological features of various sarcomas that can occur in the oral cavity. Fibrosarcoma presents as a fleshy mass with bone erosion and proliferation of fibroblasts. Liposarcoma consists of fat cells and lipoblasts in the cheek or tongue. Osteosarcoma causes bone swelling, pain, and increased alkaline phosphatase. Ewing's sarcoma presents as bone pain and swelling with an onion skin radiographic appearance. Multiple myeloma causes bone lesions and Bence Jones proteins in urine. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma appears as oral masses with lymph node involvement and low blood cell counts. Kaposi's sarcoma appears as pink or purple lesions.
This document describes a case report of a peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) in a 22-year-old female patient. POFs are non-neoplastic reactive lesions of the gingiva caused by local irritants like plaque or food impaction. Histopathological examination showed fibrous connective tissue with bony trabeculae and dystrophic calcification, consistent with POF. Treatment involves complete surgical excision to remove the lesion and any remaining irritants in order to reduce the risk of recurrence.
This document provides an overview of giant cell tumor, a type of benign bone tumor. It discusses the definition, epidemiology, clinical presentation, investigations, grading, differential diagnosis, and treatment options. Giant cell tumor commonly involves the ends of long bones and is locally aggressive, destroying bone tissue. While benign, it can occasionally metastasize. Treatment typically involves curettage with the use of adjuvants like phenol or bone cement to reduce the high risk of recurrence. Reconstruction of residual defects is often done with bone grafts or cement.
This document summarizes various connective tissue lesions, including fibrous lesions such as peripheral fibroma, generalized gingival hyperplasia, and denture-induced fibrous hyperplasia. It also discusses neoplasms like myxoma and fibrosarcoma. Vascular, neural, muscle, and fat lesions are also covered. For each type of lesion, the document discusses etiology, clinical features, histopathology, and treatment.
This document discusses giant cell lesions of the jaws. It begins by defining giant cells and describing their origin from monocytes and macrophages. Giant cell lesions are then classified as inflammatory/reactive, metabolic, or neoplastic. Central giant cell granuloma, aneurysmal bone cyst, and traumatic bone cyst are discussed as examples of inflammatory/reactive lesions. Cherubism and brown tumor of hyperparathyroidism represent metabolic giant cell lesions. Osteoblastoma is provided as an example of a neoplastic giant cell lesion. Clinical, radiographic, histologic, and treatment details are outlined for many of the conditions.

This document analyzes 50 cases of oral malignancy resection and reconstruction. It found that buccal mucosa cancers were the most common, accounting for 54% of cases. Reconstruction methods included local flaps, pedicled flaps and free flaps. Free tissue transfer with fibula and anterolateral thigh flaps were commonly used for larger defects. The document concludes that recent reconstructive advancements have made more extensive resections possible, and free flaps significantly aid in rehabilitating patients with large excision defects.

This document provides an overview of wound healing, its functions, stages, mechanisms, factors affecting it, and complications.
A wound is a break in the integrity of the skin or tissues, which may be associated with disruption of the structure and function.
Healing is the body’s response to injury in an attempt to restore normal structure and functions.
Healing can occur in two ways: Regeneration and Repair
There are 4 phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This document also describes the mechanism of wound healing. Factors that affect healing include infection, uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition, age, anemia, the presence of foreign bodies, etc.
Complications of wound healing like infection, hyperpigmentation of scar, contractures, and keloid formation.

THE SACRIFICE HOW PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTS STUDENTS ARE SACRIFICING TO CHANGE T...indexPub
The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.
