to make life a bit easier. The fact
is women are the caregivers of our society
and we often find ourselves simply too worn
out at the end of each day to find time for
ourselves. Our jobs are increasingly more
demanding, our family and often friends are
taken care of first-if we have
time for our friends at all. We all need ways
to reduce stress, to renew our soul and
our spirit.
We will cover this and ways to combat the
effect that stress and our busy schedules have on our lives.
• On the Health front, our medical experts Dr. Paul Vanek and Dr. Scott
Rose will provide advice on medical alternatives for dealing with
effects that stress causes to our bodies.

Cleveland’s Queen of Culinary who has been both an innovator and a fixture
bringing to Cleveland the very best in culinary education.
In addition to The Loretta Paganini School of Cooking, (LPSC) she recently
opened the International Culinary Arts and Sciences Institute (ICAS) which
is the first professional culinary school in Ohio.
Stefanie Paganini is the great new force in the LPSC. Stefanie holds many
titles at LPSC, Inc. including Marketing and Human Resource Director and
Chief Legal Counsel. She received her Culinary Certificate from ICASI in
Pastry and will graduate in December with her Pastry Arts Diploma. She
currently teaches a number of classes in the recreational program at the

Barbara A. Reynolds serves as President of Realty One Real
Living. In a profession that at one time was historically dominated
by men, Barbara has risen through the ranks of Real Living, the
largest residential real estate firm in the Midwest, the fourth-largest
in the nation (with nearly $9 billion in annual sales).
Our selection of Barbara Reynolds as the Premiere Woman of
Cleveland is due in great part to her perseverance and dedication
to her profession and the success she obtained at Realty One-
Real Living, but she is also being recognized due to her efforts
to transform her company and the real estate industry and her
commitment to Cleveland itself.
Good Ol’ Boy No Longer
It wasn’t too long ago in the late 1960’s that the real estate business was predominantly a good old boy
network. In fact it was during the 60’s that the real estate industry saw its first woman realtor. Even
when Barbara started her professional career in real estate in 1978 less than 21 percent of real estate
agents were women.
Location… Location… Location

Barbara Reynolds believes in

CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE
Well the industry has certainly changed. A 1996 survey of the National Association of
Realtors, which has 720,000 members, showed that 54 percent of the association’s
residential realtors were women.
Barbara Reynolds’ journey is a testament to the important role women now hold not only
as realtors but as the principal decision makers in purchases of residential property.
Barbara Reynolds’ journey into the real estate industry was a somewhat reluctant,
unintentional venture. In 1978 she was teaching dance and gymnastics at the Euclid YMCA
when she began real estate courses simply for the opportunity to learn something new.
She never planned to pursue a career but at the urging of friends she started her career
that year with Hill Top Realty which later became Realty One.
Even though she began her career during one of the most turbulent times in the real
estate industry (double-digit interest rates), she excelled at her profession.
Over the next two decades she progressed from a sales associate, to an office and
district manager, and then to Vice President of both Marketing and Relocation. In 1997
Barbara was promoted to Senior Vice President, General Sales Manager, overseeing the
management, growth and development of Realty One’s 1500-member sales team. She was
promoted to Executive Vice President, General Sales Manager in March, 2001, and to her
present position in February, 2002.
We were particularly interested in Barbara’s insights as to what it takes to be successful in
the real estate profession and why it is a good career choice for a woman.
No More Glass Ceilings
Barbara was quick to point out that in the real estate industry there is not really a glass
ceiling. “Maybe at one time there was a perception that women cannot sell real estate, but
those days are long gone. There are no glass barriers in real estate sales. Real estate is
commission based and your wage is based on your job performance.”
In fact, the 2002 report by the U.S. General Accounting Office, “A New Look Through the
Glass Ceiling: Where are the Women?” found the real estate industry had less disparity
between the earnings of men and women and the number of women management
positions are consistent to the number of women in the profession.
Women Have What it Takes
Barbara believes that the real estate profession is well suited to women as they are
naturally endowed with attributes that it takes to be successful. “Women care about
people and have the ability to counsel and nurture; they are natural listeners and intuitive
negotiators. These are all the skills necessary to be a successful sales person. We can
train them in what they need to know about real estate. The important part is having the
heart and instinct in dealing with people.”
Training is Key
Barbara believes training is an important element of what makes a great real estate agent
and wants her real estate agents to be the best trained in the industry. When she moved
her office to downtown Cleveland, she incorporated a state of the art training facility. In
addition to the normal training all real estate agents receive to get licensed, Realty One
Real Living requires all new agents to complete an exclusive training program in the proper
handling of the home buying and selling process.
“I believe we have the finest training in the real estate industry. It prepares our agents to
be immediately experienced in the many areas of real estate. Our new agents are taught
lessons in ethics, policy, and basic listing and selling techniques. They have an army of
resources at their disposal to insure their success and that of their clients,” said Reynolds.
Cleveland and the surrounding communities are
blessed with inspiring women who have contributed to
the fabric of our great city. Whether their contribution
is associated with their business savvy, their artistic
endeavors or their philanthropy, each has made a
positive mark on our community and the lives of
each of us.
We would like to showcase and honor some of these
women each issue with our Premiere Woman of
Cleveland Series. We hope that their stories, their
struggles and their successes will serve as an
inspiration to us all. In each issue, we will highlight a
woman who has had an impact on our city, business,
community or our beliefs. We hope that you find their
stories inspirational and maybe find an idea or two
along the way that will help you achieve your own
personal success story.
Barbara serves on the National Association of Realtors’
Executive Committee, and was named one of the “Top
Women in Real Estate” by National Relocation and
Real Estate magazine. A founding board member and
chairperson of the Mentor Schools Foundation, she
was also named to Ohio’s Governor’s Commission
of Elementary and Secondary Education. Cleveland
Magazine has cited her as one of “Cleveland’s Most
Interesting People.”  She was most recently honored as
a “Woman of Note” by Crain’s’ Cleveland.

Look Up
When asked what advice she had for women starting out in this profession,
Barbara recommended that you “look up.” Find someone that you want to emulate
someone who has already “made it” and seek them out as a mentor. In fact Barbara
recommended that you have a number of mentors, some in and out of your
profession. The key to a successful mentor is to ask for feedback and listen to them.
Barbara said what helped her in her career and life were a number of mentors she
has had over the years both in and out of the profession, both men and women.
She believes that women as a whole need to do a better job reaching out and raising
each other up. There has been a presumption that women are harder on other
women. What we really need to do is network better so we can learn from one
another and bring our strengths to the tables to assist others up the ladder as well.
She is committed to making Realty One Real Living a top down organization that sets
the standard for the industry. “We know our business not because we have a woman
head but because we understand the industry, where it is going and we meet those
needs through education and innovation.” It is a belief that threads throughout
the organization.
Committed to Cleveland
On her decision to move their offices from Independence, Ohio to downtown
Cleveland Barbara said that there was no question there had to be a move as
there was too much room (at the Independence facility). “Real Living wants to be
a major player in this region and unless Clevelanders’ believe in Cleveland, it will
not get back.”
“We wanted to be in the heart of our city,’’ Reynolds said. “We believe in downtown’s
tremendous economic potential. As Northern Ohio’s leading residential real estate,
we wanted to prove our commitment to Cleveland’s growth. This exciting move also
proves Realty One Real Living’s commitment to being the most innovative, forward-
thinking real estate firm in the area.”
Women Are the Driving Force
There is no question that women will continue to be a predominant influence in
the decision making process of buying a home. Historically, women have been the
driving force in selecting the home. The home is the center of the family life, and
even if the woman works outside the home they are still the heart and soul of the
family. The reality is that single women have become the second largest group of
home buyers (21%) behind couples who comprise 59% of the sales.
Realty One Real Living has long recognized women’s influence on home purchasing
for years, but has recently started courting the women’s market more directly by a
series of ads that identify with women in various transition phases of their lives.
Barbara Reynolds’ understanding of the real estate industry, the demographics and
of Cleveland has set the standard for her industry. That and her commitment to
Cleveland have won her a place as our Premiere Woman of Cleveland.
One final admonition from Barbara, “If you are not passionate about what you are
doing… Don’t.”
Based on that it is a safe bet to assume that she will continue leading Realty One
Real Living and being a force in the Cleveland Market for years to come.
If you are not
passionate about
what you are doing
…Don’t.

Cosmetic Surgery, Mentor, Ohio
It’s all in the eyes
Eyelid Surgery and Refreshing Your Look
“Are you tired? Didn’t you sleep well?
Burning the candle at both ends?”
If you are responding to those questions by your friends or co-workers then they
may be hinting that your eyes look tired even if you don’t feel that way. The tired
appearance from excess skin folds over the eyes is a common concern for those who
prefer to look how they feel. For the person who may contemplate doing something
about it, the typical goal is to restore the patient’s tired looking eyes to a more youthful
appearance. The well-rested look from a lower and/or upper lid blepharoplasty turns
the clock back by ten or more years, allowing the younger, energetic appearance to
transcend from within. Obviously cosmetic surgery plays a huge role in a person’s
appearance. Facial rejuvenation works in tandem with internal levels of energy
and vitality. It has some wonderful side effects in regards to improved self-esteem
and self-confidence.
At the time of an office consultation, the surgeon should discuss your medical, smoking
and sun damage history, including any previous surgery. These factors and your
genetics help to determine what is appropriate for helping you look more rejuvenated.
Listening to each patient and knowing result goals will dictate the proper course
of treatment or procedure that will make the most sense for each individual. Often
an excellent first step is to begin a skin care program that is tailored to your needs.
As we enter each new decade of life the needs of our skin changes. Those changes
seen in your face as a result of your life circumstances will be addressed and a
recommendation for a skin rejuvenation course will be discussed. These steps can be
begun the day of the consultation with instructions on a home program regimen that
can have refreshing effects on the skin in a few weeks.
Timing
Many people ask, “Am I too young for an eyelid lift?” I have seen and restored tired
eyes on people in their twenty’s and beyond. One 26 year old male brought his mother
with him and she said she’s been hearing his complaining of his tired baggy eyes since
he was a 13 year old. He was an excellent anatomic candidate and benefited from a
11 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE
Health
1-hour eyelid lift that left no visible scar (it was done through the conjunctival lining approach). Now 6
years later he still looks refreshed and is “happy in his own skin.” He and I both felt that he looked far
older than his age before his surgery. He now feels more confident and reflects this in his energetic
business and personal pursuits since his surgery.
The point is that it is the anatomic condition of the eyelid tissue that is the problem. Age is often,
but not exclusively the contributor. As we age there will be excess tissue laxity that will manifest. If
a person has an eyelid lift in her 40’s it is not a forgone conclusion that “she will need another lift”
in the future. A 50 or 60 year old who says they are beginning to look like one of their older siblings
or a parent have an insight into their own anatomic future. It is a reliable indicator for them to
“benchmark” themselves. Some 44 year olds say that they’ll wait until they are 50 to have their eyes
done. Of course they may add “or until I start looking like my (6 year older) brother, whichever comes
first.” Each person will have that trigger of appearance that let’s them know it’s time for them to look
into having a more refreshed look.
Expectations and Recovery
With the decision to improve one’s appearance comes a host of expectations. Those expectations
should be realistically reviewed in the context of your consultation. You should be shown in the mirror
the effects of a reduced amount of skin in the upper lids. With gentle closure of the eye, the incision
is placed in the crease above the lashes of the upper lid, called the tarsal fold. A woven suture is
placed under the skin surface so there are no suture marks left once you heal. The incision on the
lower lid is placed exactly where the eyelashes meet the lower lid skin. The muscle is suspended
and repositioned to a position of youthfulness and excess or herniated fat is trimmed. Skin excess is
tailored and the suture line is closed with a woven stitch that is pulled out at 5 to 7 days after surgery.
From the first days the effects are readily apparent. A more refreshed and less “operated on” look
takes a few weeks to emerge after the initial swelling occurs. Obviously bruising is a consideration
during the first 1 or 2 weeks. But this can be covered by make-up within the first few days. Bruising
typically resolves in 1 to 3 weeks. Some medications that cause bruising are restricted pre-operatively.
These will be reviewed at the time of our discussion. Patients need to massage their surgical sites to
take advantage of the natural softening effects our bodies provide us. The stiffness of incisions and
the outcome of the procedure can be improved upon with good scar management.
Mirror Imaging Software™
One of the primary goals of the initial consultation is to determine what you want. It is then your
surgeon’s job to realistically teach you about what he/she can deliver. There are several tools
which can be utilized to reach an understanding of what you want. The first is carefully listening to
what you say when you describe what you want to achieve. Once the outcome goals are defined
and discussed in front of a mirror during the consultation process, your digital photographs are
then obtained for review and study. These photographs can be “morphed” or modified in order to
simulate the possible outcome after swelling has subsided and healing has occurred. While not
a guarantee of a result, it enhances the discussion of likely outcomes and provides you with a
realistic representation of what to expect. This Mirror Imaging™ Software has been a feature of
the consultation process for facial rejuvenation procedures for years. Showing your image with the
changes discussed allows you and your surgeon to be comfortable. Your unmodified photograph in
several views can be shown next to the digitally changed photographs for side-by-side comparison.
The ability to obtain a surgical result is then discussed in the context of your features compared with
the results seen in pre- and post-operative photographs of other actual patients with similar concerns
who have already healed. In this combined method, you will be educated about the architectural
features of your face and the results you wish to obtain. Many patients remark that they can see their
own areas of concern in the photographs of others, and are reassured that the lid lift procedures will
address those concerns.
Risks
No surgical procedure is without risk. These risks will be reviewed in detail, with particular attention to
the components that apply to your particular medical and anatomic circumstances. The consultation
process is a called a process for a reason in my practice. It is structured in order to provide you with
the tools to make an informed choice for yourself.

M
any people suffer from a variety of head, neck and shoulder pains,
and headaches. A lot of people accept this as a normal sign of aging.
An equal number of people have tried many types of treatments
and medications only to be disappointed time
and time again by poor outcomes. But did
you know that some of these aches and pains
may be caused by an incorrect biting position?
That’s right! If your bite is off, the muscles of
your face may go into chronic spasms, or not
be working at their ideal length. These muscles
may be overworking in order to maintain your
present bite position. Different muscles work
together to open and close your jaw. They are
also used for chewing, and swallowing. These
muscles are not only in the area of your jaw joint. The jaw positioning muscles
run up and down the neck, through the cheeks, into the forehead, and around
the ears. Some even wrap around the skull. Every time you chew and swallow,
the teeth must either come together or come very close to each other.
Therefore, where the teeth want the muscles to be and where the muscles
want to be may be totally different. Our bodies can accommodate only so
much. When the muscles can no longer accommodate – this translates into
aches, pains, and headaches. When muscles
do not get a chance to rest, they soon suffer
from poor circulation. This leads to a lack of
needed oxygen and the accumulation of waste
products of metabolism. This fuels the cycle
of pain.
Your habitual bite may not be what is best
for you. Even if you have great teeth, your
bite may be off. So even if you do not have
“common” dental problems, this does not
mean that your bite is not affecting your overall health. Occlusal disease can
create just as many problems if not more than dental decay. A bad tooth
effects the one tooth. A bad bite can effect the entire mouth, muscles, joints,
and posture.
Taking the
Biteout of your
Head, Neck Jaw
Joint Pains
Neuromuscular Dentistry
is the art and science of using
the relaxed position of the
muscles of the head and neck to
properly place the jaw in its
optimal position.
13 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE
Years of clinical experience and research has shown Neuromuscular Dentistry to be effective
in treating patients with a variety of head and neck pain, including TMJ. This approach differs
greatly from the traditional type of dentistry. In this approach the teeth are treated and assumes
the muscles and the jaw joints will accommodate to the body’s habitual bite. In this traditional
method, treating teeth by restorative procedures (crowns, bridges, and fillings) or common
orthodontics (straightening teeth) are often done without accurately determining a correct jaw
posture and a proper vertical dimension. A physiologic resting position and body posture is often
overlooked and not even considered as an important part of the whole dental system. Not taking
into account the muscles when diagnosing and treatment planning is like baking a cake and not
putting in the eggs.
State of the art technology allows for the objective evaluation of the muscles and various
other factors that may be affecting your bite, causing headaches and other facial pains. These
tests include Electromyography, 3-dimensional jaw tracking and Joint Sonography. All three
diagnostic procedures are painless and non-invasive. Yet they give the Neuromuscular Dentist
the data to make a good diagnosis. The Center for Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry is one of
the few dental offices in the country to have this state of the art technology and sophisticated
computerization to collect the necessary data. Once it is determined that the bite is off, the
fabrication and use of a dental orthotic to be worn on the lower teeth helps stabilize the correct
bite position. The new bite is determined by data that shows where the muscles are most
relaxed. Once wearing the removable orthotic, most patients find this alleviates many of their
problems. In fact many patients are able to go off of or greatly reduce pain medications within
the first couple of weeks. The difference between the Neuromuscular orthotic and other dental
splints is that this is made to a specific relaxed bite, and not a generic made up bite. Once the
symptoms subside and the patient and dentist are satisfied with the new bite, final treatment
options can be discussed.
Neuromuscular Dental Therapy is also used for Cosmetic procedures.
When you restore patients to their new relaxed position,
this also restores facial balance and harmony.
Not only will you feel great, you will look great too!
Those patients that are seeking state of the art care and treatment, or those patients that are
tired of educated guesses or, trial-and-error treatment protocols, should re-evaluate by what
philosophy they would like their care and treatment to be guided. Choose a doctor who’s
success is in the philosophy of taking a neuromuscular approach in all facets of dentistry.

“I don’t have to worry now about burning a whole vacation day or claiming a sick day
to take my kids to the dentist or doctor.”
Did you ever wish your job allowed you the flexibility to not have to take a whole vacation day or use up
precious personal days to take your child to the doctor or wait for the freezer repairman to arrive?  Well,
a new concept has arrived in a few Cleveland companies.  It’s called Paid Time Off (PTO) and is a huge
success.  PTO affords employees greater flexibility in maintaining the delicate balance between work and
family duties.
“Many women employees are faced with most, if not all of the extremely stressful household duties and
emergencies,” said the company’s PTO Project Leader Anita Voveris. “PTO effectively grouped together
scheduled and unscheduled time away from work replacing vacation, personal and sick days.”
Skeptics at first, but a big hit today! When PTO took effect a year ago, many were skeptical of
breaking away from the traditional “sick days, vacation days” policy. Today, according to employees and
management, if exit interviews are any indication, PTO is a big hit. Eighty-percent of employees taking part
in 2005 exit interviews had nothing but praise.
“Some employees requested PTO even before it was implemented,” said a Vice President who
implemented PTO about a year ago. “We looked at PTO several years ago and put it on the back burner
because more study was needed. We revisited it in early 2004 and a sampling of managers and employees
showed a lot of interest, so we went forward.”
Helps attracts new talent Companies offering PTO have a huge competitive edge in recruiting,
retaining employees and staying current with the market. “PTO better fits the needs of our management
and workforce. We now know from employee and manager feedback that this has improved employee
morale and we all know that improved employee morale will translate to improved productivity.”

s the baby boomers begin to retire this year, we are very aware that most of us will live to a very
ripe old age. Longevity is increasing as medical advances and technology keep us alive longer.
We want to live healthy long lives and most of know that an annual medical exam is important.
We know that this exam can uncover illnesses before the physical symptoms occur. Is your blood
pressure high? Then take this pill before it becomes a problem. Is your cholesterol too high? Well here’s
another pill to take before it becomes a problem. Are you overweight and sedentary? If only this solution
was as easy as taking those little pills. And even if we don’t follow our doctor’s advice, most of us go
back next year or the year after to monitor our health.
But how many of us pay this much attention to our financial health? After all who wants to live a long
healthy life broke without any money? Let’s take a look at how a financial exam compares to a
medical exam.
Gathering Data – the old saying is so true here. Garbage in and garbage out. Collecting valid and
relevant data is a skill that comes from experience and a qualified financial advisor will know the
questions to ask. Honesty and accuracy are essential elements at this step.
Defining Goals - When asked what was the most important factor for financial success most people
will tell you that it’s marrying well, a good education and a great career or winning the lottery. The truth
is the #1 factor for financial success is clearly defined goals. These are logical goals that are straight from
your values, meaning that they are possible to achieve.
Analyzing Data – Developing the financial statements that illustrate your present situation will give
you and your advisor a snapshot into your present situation.
The Diagnosis – what is keeping you from achieving the prosperity you want and deserve? Poor
financial habits are often a symptom of underlying feelings of inadequacy, deprivation or a desire for
attention. Working with someone you trust can help you discover and then rectify these issues.
Observations and Recommendations - Your advisor will give you plenty and it is up to you to
take the medicine. He or she will also help you prioritize the steps you need to take. When you go back
for your follow-up meeting, another analysis should be made to determine if you are on track to reach
your goals.

A word about debt - There is good debt and bad debt.
Good debt gives us the means to buy a new home, get a college
education or even start a business. Bad debt is spending money
you don’t have for something you don’t need. Just because you
want it. If you are so far into debt that you cannot make your
payments, consider a meeting with a credit counselor and work
out a payment plan.
Diets don’t work and neither do budgets - Counting
calories and pennies is tedious and defeating. Lifestyle changes
are called for when you are either over eating or over spending.
Work with an advisor that you trust who understands in a non
judgmental manner what you are going through.
Personally I am looking forward to my later years. I hope I will learn
from my life’s lessons and experiences and that I will bring wisdom
and compassion to those I meet. I hope that I will be healthy and
strong with the energy to help my family and others who are less
fortunate. I hope that I will be financially fit and not a burden on
the people I love and who love me. I know none of this will be true
unless I engage in the process to make it all happen in a holistic
and natural way. Give yourself a gift this spring. Have a financial

you to:

	 • Develop clearly defined goals based on your personal

	 • Diagnose your condition and recommend treatment
	 • Motivate you to stay on course

Absolutely the best form of advertising there is. No sales pressure, no credibility problems, and very low cost of
sales. People refer customers to you as a favor to their friends, the customers. If it’s done as a favor to you, that’s
usually a bonus.
Think about it. The last time you recommended a movie, or a business, did you do it as a favor to the person you were
talking to or the business you were talking about? The person, in all likelihood. A friend or business acquaintance. And
if your recommendation was to fall through, you lose credibility. They know that. You’re trying to help them and putting
the value of your opinion on the line when you do. That means something.
Referrals have to be earned. People won’t tell the ones that will listen most, their family and friends, to use your service
if they know it’s no good. Once you have earned it, it should come naturally. But it often doesn’t.
Why? Simply put, people forget. They’re busy and your business isn’t their top priority. Referrals are the absolute best
way to make sure that you keep the new business coming in. That helps you to spend more time working than selling.
And it means time spent with people who know what you’re all about instead of cold calling!
Word of mouth advertising.
Spreading the word.
Personal recommendations.
Putting in a good word.
And a dozen other ways to say it...
Referrals.
10Secrets
to
Getting More
Referrals
Business
refer

19 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE
1. Ask for them.
The simplest way in the world to get referrals is to ask for them.
Whenever someone compliments you on a job, let them know you
appreciate it, and that you’ll do just as good a job for their friends. Tell
them that you’d appreciate it if they could spread the word if they really
like your work.
You may assume that people would tell their friends, but it’s amazing the
difference it makes if you give them that gentle reminder. People like to
help those that do a good job for them. It makes them feel smart, and
they feel good helping out their friends, who just happen to be your next
customers.
2. Trade them.
Make a deal with other businesspeople you know. If you know they do
good work, offer to tell people about them every chance you get, and
ask them to return the favor. It’s a good way to start building relationships
and it tells you what they really think of your work.
If they agree, make sure you keep an eye out for people to refer them
to. Keep up your end of the bargain, and the odds are good they’ll
keep theirs.
3. Reward them.
The idea of `finders fees’ is very common in big business, but it is
frequently ignored in small business. It shouldn’t be.
Make it known that when someone sends you a job, there’s something
in it for them. Perhaps a set fee, or a percentage of the total. If they send
you a new customer and you’re in retail, maybe a discount on their next
purchase. Whatever you do, make sure it’s something worthwhile for
them and sensible for you. $10 for a $25,000 job is insulting. $10 for a one
time retail customer buying a used tennis racket might be too much.
In retail it is best to go with discounts. That encourages the customer to
make additional purchases, or increases their loyalty as they see what
else they can do with the money. Anything that expands the customer
base for a retail outlet is worth rewarding.
4. Give them.
Want someone to send you referrals? Send some their way.
Nothing will start the process and make it solid like having them know
that you’re ready to return the favor. So return it in advance.
Some people will send you referrals after this simply because they know
it’s not going to be a one way street. Others because they appreciate the
thought you showed them. And some will do it out of a feeling of owing
you something. Very few will ignore it.
5. Print them.
Use testimonials in your literature and advertising.
Some people will wonder if they are the only ones that really liked your
service, or if you did a good job for them just to get some extra business.
If they see that others also appreciate your work and were willing to say
so in print, they’ll feel more comfortable in stepping out of their shell and
making their own satisfaction known.
Some people need the knowledge that they’re not the only ones who
think a certain way before they’ll say so.
6. Give out more business cards.
Yes, they do make a difference. If someone has your card, or hopefully
more than one of them, they will do *something* with it. If you have
asked them when they’re in the right frame of mind to pass it along,
they will.
One of the best things you can do with business cards is to give more
than one. If a person has just told you how much they like your work,
hand them 5 business cards. Tell them something like: “Well, I certainly
appreciate the good word. If you think you’d be doing them a favor,
maybe you could pass these on to people you know when they need
work done. Make sure you keep one for yourself in case you need to get
ahold of me, though!”
Yes, this works. It’s different, so they remember. And it’s personal, so it
matters to them.
7. Community service.
People are always willing to recommend those they see as leaders.
Public service projects are a great way to become that leader and give
something back to your community at the same time.
Make sure you don’t do this just for publicity, though. Find a cause you
personally believe in and work with that. It will be much more satisfying
for you, and more productive for the group you help. And you won’t
come across as a phony.
If you’re helping with a cause you believe in, people will see that you
care. And they’ll realize you will probably care as much about your work
as your cause.
Here’s 10 of the absolute
best ways to get more referrals
10Secrets
to
Getting More
Referrals
8. Sponsor something.
A sports team, a fund-raising drive or even a cookbook
for a school.
This falls into nearly the same category as community
service, except that it is seen as advertising. It has the same
effect. It keeps your name in front of the community and gets
people talking about you and your business.
What you sponsor should be dictated by the type of business
you’re in. A doctor will do well sponsoring a marathon or
charity golf tournament, but perhaps not a taverns dart
team. Sports bars and construction companies do well with
baseball teams, but might not do as well with a bake-off.
Match your clientele with the activity.
Don’t think this works? Ask the people who sponsor team
after team, for years. They’re not doing it solely for fun.
Although it can get to be enough fun to be worth it.
9. Be helpful.
Yes, something that simple. People appreciate someone who
is helpful. If they appreciate you, they’ll remember you and
want to return the favor. Again, do this where it’s appropriate
and where it’s meant sincerely. Like most things that lead
to referrals, this is something that becomes an end in itself
before long.
10. Join a networking group.
You may be familiar with the idea of networking groups. They
get together on a regular basis and exchange leads. These
groups are composed of professionals who are checked for
integrity before being accepted for membership so that each
member is sure that they are only recommending quality
businesses to their family and friends.
Joining one of these groups is like having a troop of
professional salespeople armed with the best closing tool
available. Personal recommendations. If your business is run
with integrity and you back up your work, it’s definitely an
option worth pursuing.

hen it comes to hiring a landscape company to do an installation,
or help you with the maintenance on your property, there are
countless companies to choose from. But how do you know if you
have contracted with a quality firm? Ultimately, most customers
are looking for that one special company that has honesty and integrity, listens to
their needs, is upfront about costs, and has the expertise and artistic talents to
do quality work. Here are some great ways to determine the level of service and
expertise you can expect.
Before calling any of the landscape firms that are on your list, check the internet.
Most quality landscape firms will have high quality websites that contain photos
of their work, descriptions of their services, and explain how they operate. Next,
you’ll want to contact organizations such as The Ohio Landscapers Association
(O.L.A.). The quality landscape firms will be members of their state’s associations,
and the great ones are often members of the national associations such as The
Professional Landcare Network (P.L.A.N.E.T.). Many of these firms will employ staff
which has also been tested and certified by such organizations. Once you have
done your homework, you are ready to call a few companies. Keep in mind; you’ll
need to look for different criteria for different types of services.
INSTALLATIONS
If you are contemplating re-doing your existing landscape or installing a new
feature such as a patio, deck or waterfall, you’ll want to first make sure that the
company you work with employs Registered Landscape Architects and Landscape
Designers. These are known as design/build landscape firms because they have
the ability to both design and install a landscape. Not all landscape firms have this
ability, and the first step to any successful landscape installation is having a firm
that can prepare a landscape design or plan.
To prepare a good plan, the company will schedule an appointment with a
landscape architect, designer or a project director on their staff to meet with
you, walk your property, determine your vision for your yard and ask you a lot of
questions. These questions will cover a wide array of topics such as; “How long do
you plan to remain in your home,” “What are your favorite blooming colors,” “What
is your favorite season,” “Do you enjoy bird watching,” “Are there any existing
water issues on the property.” This kind of company cares about your lifestyle,
cares about your investment, and wants your yard to be a reflection of you. Make
sure the company you work with also prepares a sketch of how your finished
landscape will appear. Not everyone understands a blue-print and how the results
will translate; there are companies that will artistically render the appearance of
your final project during the design phase. Companies like this typically charge for
their design work separately from the installation, however the added cost and
planning up front always saves you money and headaches once the installation
begins. You’ll end up with a landscape that thrives because sun angles and wind
direction has been considered, the soil has been studied and there is a plan for
its amendment, and water issues have been examined. Ultimately, you’ll have

a landscape that improves with age, plants that thrive, and spaces that are
user friendly and fit the home’s unique character. Quality companies will also
discuss your budget up-front. The best companies can educate you on cost
very early in the process and explain various multi-year phasing options. You
should feel very comfortable and know what you’re getting into. It is counter
productive for all involved if a budget is not established.
Once the design process is complete and the cost of installation has been
settled, the actual implementation begins. Design/build landscape firms
employ certified project managers, horticulturists, craftsmen, and technicians
so they are able to install all the aspects of your design including wood
structures, stone, paver and concrete patios, drainage systems, gardens and
plantings, pools, waterfalls, lighting and irrigation. Companies like these are
hiring “career landscapers” and “career craftsmen,” not the high school kid
down the street.
Finally, these quality companies always guarantee their work. Most of them
are proactive about their guarantees too, handling problems and issues often
before you “the client” are even aware of them.
MAINTENANCE
Your landscape is a big investment…a living and breathing investment. As
with all living things, special care and attention is needed for lawns, trees
and shrubs to remain healthy and beautiful, and for water features, irrigation
systems, and outdoor lighting to maintain optimum performance. Without
the proper attention and care, your landscape will ultimately decline. When
trying to find a quality maintenance company, which hopefully your design/
build company provides as well, you’ll want to ensure that their definition of
maintenance extends beyond mowing lawns, and weeding the beds. A good
firm should offer services ranging anywhere from lawn mowing and bed work
to selective pruning, fertilizations, irrigation management, water feature care,
and snow removal. Beyond certifications, and reputation, the fastest way to
find out if you’re dealing with a good maintenance firm is to ask about their
pruning practices.
Pruning is both an art and a science. It is an incredibly important part of
maintaining a healthy landscape, and there are very few companies that do
it correctly. If your landscape firm’s idea of pruning is pulling out the electric
hedge trimmers and turning your beautiful plants into round balls, rectangles
and squares, you have the wrong company. Unless you have an overly formal
landscape or a special hedge on your property, hedge trimmers should
NEVER be used. It is one of the most destructive things you can do to a plant.
Selective horticultural pruning is done with hand pruners. Think about the
job of a surgeon. When a surgeon performs surgery he does so to correct
some kind of specific problem. He makes a calculated, straight incision with
a very sharp, clean instrument. He does this in just the proper place so as to
minimize scarring and infection, and promote proper healing. Pruning a plant
should be done with exactly the same thought, care and precision. I won’t
bore you with the technicalities of proper pruning, but ask your potential
landscape maintenance firm how they handle pruning. If they talk about
selective horticultural hand pruning and the need to prune different plants at
different times of the year to promote proper growth and encourage beautiful
blooms, you are dealing with a quality firm. If they mention hedge trimmers,
and tell you they can prune the whole place next week, look elsewhere.
Lawn care and tree / shrub fertilizations are also extremely important and a
good way to determine who you are dealing with. This service ensures that
your plants are receiving the vitamins and nutrients necessary to flourish.
When healthy, lawn and plants are far less likely to be infested with diseases
or pests which can destroy them rapidly. Quality landscape maintenance
companies offer this service, can explain all the benefits, and have state
licensed applicators on their staff. These companies will be able to inform you
on the contents of such materials, which over the last decade have become
extremely safe for the environment, pets and wildlife. There are organic
options available too, and quality firms can advise you on such options.
FINAL ANALYSIS
The last criterion for finding a good landscape company is your own personal
comfort level. The relationship with your landscaper should be a long term
relationship. Beyond the expertise, you should like the company you work
with, and you should immediately feel that their concern for you and your yard
goes beyond the bottom line. Even the great landscape companies will make
occasional mistakes. It is what the company does to correct those occasional
mistakes, and the way in which they make you feel as a client that truly makes
the greatest difference.

Arts
You are a parent. You have before you a plethora of options for which your children
can spend their time. There’s soccer, baseball, wrestling, football, gymnastics, dance,
cheerleading, music lessons, ballet, horseback riding lessons, and the list goes on and
on and on.
We all want to give our kids something that will benefit them socially, behaviorally and
academically that will be fun for them, and if there is physical or educational benefit, that’s
all the better! There is self-esteem in being able to do an activity, and there is much to learn
from the many and varied activities in which children can participate.
Kids want to try everything, but there is a price. It’s not just the monetary cost, but the time
cost as well. There’s also discipline and commitment. Families are sitting down to dinner
less now than ever before because they are running kids to varying activities. Weekends
are taken up with sports and activities and more sports and activities. I hear parents joking
endlessly about how the portable chairs went into the car and will be there for years on
end. So how do you choose and help your children to choose an activity that provides long-
lasting benefits?
Consider a musical instrument. Is there an investment? Certainly. There is the cost of the
instrument and the cost of accessories as well as the maintenance of that instrument.
However, in most cases, you can rent an instrument before you buy to give your child a
chance to experience it with a minimal investment on your part.
There are many studies that exhort the benefits of a musical education, both in school and
in a private lesson setting. Besides giving a child a sense of identity, building self-esteem,
self-discipline, and creativity; involvement with a musical instrument has considerable
benefits for the brain. Here are some research findings:

…And that’s not all. A groundbreaking study published in the February 2005
issue of the international research journal Medical Science Monitor shows
for the first time that playing a musical instrument can reverse multiple
components of the human stress response on the genomic level. In
fact, the Yamaha Corporation has allowed dealers to host the program
that was used in this study. It’s called Clavinova Connection – an adult
program that incorporates recreational music-making and wellness.
Given that the medical community has assessed that nearly 90% of
non-catastrophic illness is caused by stress, activities that reduce stress
in the human body might mean that it’s time for us to pick up a musical
instrument and play along with our kids!

Middle school and high school students who participated in instrumental music scored significantly higher than their non-band peers in standardized tests.
University studies conducted in Georgia and Texas found significant correlations between the number of years of instrumental music instruction and academic
achievement in math, science and language arts. Source: University of Sarasota Study, Jeffrey Lynn Kluball; East Texas State University Study, Daryl Erick Trent
Music majors are the most likely group of college grads to be admitted to medical school. Physician and biologist Lewis Thomas studied the undergraduate
majors of medical school applicants. He found that 66 percent of music majors who applied to med school were admitted, the highest percentage of any group.
For comparison, (44 percent) of biochemistry majors were admitted. Also, a study of 7,500 university students revealed that music majors scored the highest
reading scores among all majors including English, biology, chemistry and math. Sources: “The Comparative Academic Abilities of Students in Education and in

three-year period. They also found that self-esteem and musical skills measures improved for the students given piano instruction. Source: Dr. Eugenia Costa-

Research shows that piano students are better equipped to comprehend mathematical and scientific concepts. A group of preschoolers received private piano
keyboard lessons and singing lessons. A second group received private computer lessons. Those children who received piano/keyboard training performed
34 percent higher on tests measuring spatial-temporal ability than the others ‹ even those who received computer training. “Spatial-temporal” is basically
proportional reasoning - ratios, fractions, proportions and thinking in space and time. This concept has long been considered a major obstacle in the teaching of
elementary math and science. Source: Neurological Research February 28, 1997
High school music students score higher on SATs in both verbal and math than their peers. In 2001, SAT takers with coursework/experience in music
performance scored 57 points higher on the verbal portion of the test and 41 points higher on the math portion than students with no coursework/experience in
the arts. Source: Profile of SAT and Achievement Test Takers, The College Board, compiled by Music Educators National Conference, 2001.
College-age musicians are emotionally healthier than their non-musician counterparts. A study conducted at the University of Texas looked at 362 students who
were in their first semester of college. They were given three tests, measuring performance anxiety, emotional concerns and alcohol related problems. In addition
to having fewer battles with the bottle, researchers also noted that the college-aged music students seemed to have surer footing when facing tests. Source:

A ten-year study, tracking more than 25,000 students, shows that music-making improves test scores. Regardless of socioeconomic background, music-making
students get higher marks in standardized tests than those who had no music involvement. The test scores studied were not only standardized tests, such as the
SAT, but also in reading proficiency exams. Source: Dr. James Catterall, UCLA, 1997
Music training helps under-achievers. In Rhode Island, researchers studied eight public school first grade classes. Half of the classes became “test arts” groups,
receiving ongoing music and visual arts training. In kindergarten, this group had lagged behind in scholastic performance. After seven months, the students were
given a standardized test. The “test arts” group had caught up to their fellow students in reading and surpassed their classmates in math by 22 percent. In the
second year of the project, the arts students widened this margin even further. Students were also evaluated on attitude and behavior. Classroom teachers noted
improvement in these areas also. Source: Nature May 23, 1996

Around the World
in 80 Days
Actually you can visit many parts of it in less days than you
think. Getaways are as few as 3 nights and world cruises in
as many as almost in what the song implied.
Cruising is simple – you unpack once and that’s it… and after that, an adventure for as many days
you planned on being on your ship of choice. It’s kinda like having a built in maid, or butler (and yes, some
ships do offer them for your convenience); your meals are prepared, your cabin is cleaned every day, fresh
towels supplied and don’t let me forget the mints on your pillow. Who can ask for anything more???
Well, you guessed it, there is more…amazing entertainment every evening, a fitness center to work off that
extra dessert, a spa for the Swedish massage you’ve always wanted, lounge chairs while drying off from
a dip in the pool, and room service when you just need a little something before dinner to enjoy on the
balcony – that class of service which makes you feel very special.
Perhaps your cruise can only take you to Nassau because of your busy schedule and, you can’t be gone
for more than a few days, or during a longer cruise, to St. John, where the island is simply breathtaking…if
aloha is on your lips, you can cruise for as few as seven days or as many as 15…the choice is yours.
The glaciers along the Inside Passage are a sight to behold and when they begin to breakaway, you hear
the calving, and a berg forms in the water on which you are cruising…perhaps you see a bald eagle, or an
otter and the naturalist on board will help you discover these rare sightings. While in Alaska, you may want
to extend your journey with a land package visiting parts that a ship cannot take you, but train or motor
coach will, and, where your ship’s cabin is traded for a hotel room.
Want to experience an international flair? Why not try China, Barcelona, the Greek Isles, Switzerland,
Russia and the list goes on and on. Europe has been extremely popular the last few years and promises to
continue to be.
Shore excursions are plentiful in each port. You can book them on-line prior to boarding, or
you can purchase them in person when you are on the ship. It is suggested to always plan a tour offered
by the cruise line since it’s the safest way to explore. And the staff knows exactly where you are, and will
be waiting for your return.

card is received when you first board - a photo is taken for the ship’s computer – so the name, photo and
you all match when you leave as well as when you return after a delightful day ashore. No one can join a
cruise mid-way and everyone must be registered as a passenger. That card also works as your door key
and is how you purchase items or services on the ship.
Since 9-11, security has been very tight. Pre-registration online is required prior to boarding so everything
is up to date when you arrive. A cruise ship is comparable to a secure building with a 24-hour security
guard. It is a controlled environment with limited access. In addition, highly trained security personnel
are employed on every vessel.
Passports will soon be the norm for anyone arriving into the United States as of December 30, 2006.
This new form of identification for everyone will be the best means of recognition no matter what your
destination. To obtain a passport you must apply at a designated post office, where a photo id with
specific measurements must be presented along with your birth certificate and a check. Previously, the
process took about 8 weeks, now since everyone will need this form of identification to travel, it can
take up to several months. So, if you are planning to travel toward the end of the year, it would be very
beneficial to begin the process now.
Singles cruise, couples cruise and so do groups. Cruises can be for a family reunion, a
church group or certification for nurses and teachers. Some employers offer them as incentives to their
staff. Conference rooms come equipped with all the necessary tools for the meeting or class that is
offered. What a great way to hold a conference or training session for those in attendance.
Arrangements must be made in advance for space held and equipment needed.
In addition, there are cruise lines that have accommodations for passengers with special needs that
strive to attend to those having mobility, visual and hearing impairments, so their cruising experience is
relaxing and enjoyable.
There are big ships and little ships but no matter what the size, the staff is fitting for the number of
passengers. Gratuities are usually not included in the price of the package, and are paid for at the end of
your voyage.
So you really wanted to go to Las Vegas, but the cruise sounded exciting, so you went with it?
Don’t worry, there’s a casino right on board… with a myriad of slots and table games. Gaming is only
active when the ship is sailing and is not allowed in Hawaii due to the state’s regulations.
Elevators get you from deck to deck – you will feel as though you are in a floating hotel – one that is
elegant and truly beyond your expectations.
You didn’t pack enough??? Don’t fret, many cruise lines offer washing facilities on board that are
available to use. If a washer and dryer are not available, for a fee, you can have your laundry done for
you, it’s as simple as that!
Most ships have set dining times for dinner… and there are others that offer the option of having
dinner whenever you want to eat from 5pm to 11pm. Some ships present dining venues where
reservations are made and an extra fee is involved for a dining experience fit for royalty. Maybe you
are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or perhaps on your honeymoon, you may want to try this specialty
dining experience.
There are daily activities for adults and a kids’ program for the children from ages 3-17 – most times you
don’t even know the kids came with you…they are so involved in the program and are making some
life-long friendships. Activities are on-going every day – you can do as much or as little as you like.
Baby sitting is also available; programs differ with each cruise line.
Whatever the mood, there is a cruise out there for you.
And, once you’ve been on one, you begin planning for another because there is so much to
see and do.

Bed Breakfast
I love the opportunity of searching out new Bed Breakfasts that are truly unique in what they offer. The
Goodwin House Bed Breakfast in the historic village of Burton, Ohio is just such a place. This gorgeous
red brick BB allows you to submerse yourself in history while stepping back in time without leaving
the luxuries of modern living. The Proprietors Robyn Morris and Tom Spence have created an absolutely
charming BB that is the ideal alternative to typical hotel lodging. If you are looking to enjoy a relaxing
weekend, be pampered for just one night, or spend a fun-filled week you should check in to the Goodwin
House Bed Breakfast.
Conveniently situated in walking distance of Burton square which is home to historical Century Village and
Museum and many unique shops and antique stores. It makes an excellent jumping off point for those
who want to attend one of the many local festivals and fairs including the Apple Butter Festival, Maple
Syrup Festival, Great Geauga County Fair, Pancake Breakfasts, Antique and Classic Car Shows, and
Holiday events.
What makes this BB truly unique is the history and heritage of the Goodwin House. As you walk through
the dining room and parlor, you are struck by the sense of history. Originally built in 1828 for Dr. Erastus
Goodwin, a prominent physician serving the region, this Greek Revival landmark house is listed on the Na-
tional Register of Historic Places. It retains many of its original features, including wood floors and trim. The
house is constructed of impressive hand-hewn timbers and beams noteworthy for the fine mortise and
tenon joinery. The basic framework of the house uses no nails or screws, only pegs. Where nails do appear
in floors or trim, they are 100-180 year old square nails. The cherry staircase and banister are original, as
are the American Chestnut floors, which are now rare. The furniture throughout the home spans hundreds
of years of history and includes exquisite mahogany, cherry, walnut, and tiger maple pieces. It is a real treat
for those who love antiques.
The intimate and comfortable Goodwin House Bed and Breakfast is the ideal “home away from home.” This
BB features two spacious guest rooms. If available, we recommend you ask for the Cherry Room simply
for the lace-canopy in the Queen size four-poster bed. It is fitted with top of the line pillow-top mattress
that is like sleeping on a cloud!
Accommodations in this spacious 2-guestroom BB include all new en-suite bathrooms, 4-season fire-
places, wireless Internet, flat panel television w/DVD player, and clock radio w/CD. The entire house even
has wireless Internet access.
The mark of a great BB is the Breakfast. It is often what really distinguishes a really great BB. The
Goodwin House rises to the challenge by offering a full breakfast that can be tailored to your dietary needs
or preferences. (i.e. low carb, vegetarian, etc.) However, if you are able, enjoy the French Toast which is their
breakfast specialty. It is served with world famous Geauga County Maple Syrup (YUMMM!). They also offer
local treats such as Apple Butter and fresh fruit.
It is the unexpected hospitality that gives this BB it character and charm. In the evening, guests are
rewarded with a signature evening treat – “Tom’s Crème Brulee.” If you are looking for a truly unique BB,
the Goodwin House offers warm country hospitality with all the grace and charm of a bygone era with all
the comforts of today!

I
have had the privilege of being able to travel the world in search of that
perfect BB that has a perfect blend of history, luxurious decor, hospitality
and overall romantic mystique. It was a real treat to come across one of
the top 15 Bed and Breakfasts in North America situated minutes away in
historic Painesville, Ohio.
Fitzgerald’s Irish Bed and Breakfast is a fabulous find nestled on beautifully
landscaped grounds. It is a real treasure where the owners Tom and Debra Fitzgerald
have mastered the skill of running the perfect bed and breakfast. They are the
consummate hosts. Throughout the graciously appointed rooms are plaques and
signs with the phrase Cead Mile Failte . Here it is more than just a quaint Irish saying
meaning, “A hundred thousand welcomes.” It is truly an attitude that surrounds all
aspects of how the Fitzgerald’s run their BB.
The history of how Debra and Tom Fitzgerald came to run a BB makes one believe in the “luck of the
Irish.” They had already experienced some of the finest Irish BBs through their numerous trips to the Irish
countryside. But when the 16 room Tudor built in 1937 came up for sale, they had no intention of turning
it into a BB. It became a labor of love renovating the home for themselves. As they began to restore it to
its original grandeur, it was clear they had something very special. Architecturally, the restored home is a
landmark of craftsmanship. The magnificence of the castle-like home created a buzz amongst those who
saw it being restored and the interest was overwhelming. The Fitzgerald’s knew that they had to share this
home, and their memories of the Irish BBs gave them the direction.
When finally renovated, the results were nothing less than magnificent. Those who enjoy tours of distinctive
homes will be charmed by the final results. From the unusual turret to its elaborate eleven-foot fireplace,
each room has unique architectural appeal. The charm however, is in the details. The hardwood floor and
design details are what make the home so interesting. The guests of Fitzgerald’s Irish BB have recognized
this as well by paying them the highest compliment. In 2004, Inn-goers voted them the “Best Interior Design
and Decor” for all BBs throughout North America.
However what is really important in a BB are the “beds” and the “breakfast.” At Fitzgerald’s Irish Bed and
Breakfast, the “beds” or guest rooms are simply elegant. There are four guest rooms each of them with its

own private bath. Each room has generous upscale amenities that pamper and please. We recommend if
available that you ask for the Galway Room. It is the most popular of all the guest rooms possibly due to
luxurious attention to details. The Galway Room has a beautiful cherry Queen size sleigh bed and the room
is decorated in greens, cream and burgundy. Located on the first floor, it has a glamour bathroom with a
large corner Jacuzzi. The Fitzgerald’s understand the importance of details; from the luxurious robes to the
Irish crystal lamps they have not overlooked anything. Unlike a lot of BBs, they are not afraid of allowing
technology into their guest rooms. The Galway room has a high Definition LCD flat-screen TV with Satellite
reception, high speed wireless Internet, DVD player and a microwave oven.
The “breakfast” part of the BB is also worth noting. Guests
can begin their morning with the BB’s signature coffee, a
special “Top O The Morning” blend of Daybreak coffee. This
fresh-roasted coffee is so good that many guests arrange
to have it shipped to their home. During the week, guests
can partake from an enhanced continental breakfast of
cereal, fruit cup and homemade scones that is available
starting at 7:00am. However, weekend guests are subject
to a real treat. Tom Fitzgerald is a gourmet cook whose
recipes have been showcased on PBS. Such dishes may
include Apple or Strawberry Stuffed French Toast or
Scrambled Eggs with Roasted Pepper Cream Sauce served
in a Puff Pastry. Breakfast on the weekend is served
at 9:00am.
The real surprise is how much the surrounding community
has to offer visitors to the BB. Of course Cleveland and
all of its cultural, theatrical and sporting events are just 30
minutes away. Just minutes away however are some of the
most visited trails and beaches in the Great Lakes region.
There are 20 of the finest wineries in the mid-west just a
short driving distance away.
The proprietors often offer special packages for their
guests who wish to take advantage of special events taking
place in the community. Vintage Ohio (wine tasting) at
Lake Farmpark or the Irish Summer Festival are two such
packages. However the most popular packages are those
that take advantage of the romantic atmosphere of the bed
and breakfast.
Those looking for a romantic anniversary or honeymooners have found the Bed and Breakfast an ideal
getaway. Relaxation and romantic packages include: bottle of champagne, hand dipped chocolates, fresh
flowers, massages by a Licensed Massage Therapist, cheese and cracker baskets or dinner certificates at
an area restaurant. Those who are interested in golfing can obtain a package that includes golf at one of
the region’s most revered courses that ranks among the top of Ohio golf resorts.
While the Fitzgerald’s have had guests from as far away as Australia, the majority of their guests are either
local or those that come back year after year. Tom and Debra Fitzgerald seem to genuinely enjoy the
friends that they have made and who have shared their home. They have been able to master the balance
between being very friendly and attentive but provide the much sought after privacy and seclusion one
may seek in a Bed and Breakfast.
Their secret is best summed up by their guests who also voted the Fitzgerald’s Irish Bed and Breakfast as
the best in the nation for “affordable luxury.”

Tea Timeat Rosepointe Cottage
W hen you think of Chardon, do you immediately think of snow country and The
Maple Festival? Well there’s a lot more than that! Chardon is a destination
town. It has a quaint square filled with antique stores and unique specialty shops, and
just off the square, sits Rosepointe Cottage Tea Room, a very special tea house that
perhaps even some locals don’t know is there.
The fact is, Rosepointe Cottage has been delighting guests since the beginning of this
century (okay since May 2000) and is located in a very non-assuming Century home.
The unassuming nature of the home makes the grace and elegance found inside even
more of a treasure. Once you enter you are transformed into a different era - a return
to the civility of days gone by. Mariann Goodwin has managed to recreate the quiet
elegance and refinement of a grand English Tea parlor.
Her passion for sharing her afternoon tea came from helping a friend who spent years
teaching schools, community and church groups the history and etiquette of high tea.
The ambience of the circa 1839 home is a key ingredient in the illusion that you have
stepped back to a more gentile time. Simply said, the home is charming. Great care
was taken in recreating the perfect setting. The Parlor is bright with cheerfully appointed
décor. The home has large windows trimmed with beautiful hand carved rosettes that
give warmth and a sense that you are sitting in the fine parlor of a good friend having
afternoon tea.
The hospitality is one of the most important aspects of any great tearoom. Mariann and
her staff have captured the warmth and friendliness of being a great hostess. The secret
is her attention to detail in selecting and training her staff in the fine art of high tea. The
server we have had on each occasion is cut from the same cloth as someone who has
just stepped out of 18th century Victorian times. Her mannerisms and politeness make
this a truly memorable event.
Afternoon tea ($15.95) is available anytime at Rosepointe Cottage. It consists of three
courses: An array of dainty finger sandwiches and savories, freshly baked totally
delectable scones with clotted cream and jam and an assortment of tea fancies that
will delight your palette and of course your choice of freshly brewed tea. Something
we consider to be notable is that, unlike some tea houses, the Afternoon Tea does not
require advance notice.

A smaller version of the Afternoon Tea called the “Cream Tea” is available for $8.95. It features fresh fruit,
a scone with Devonshire cream and jam and your choice of tea.
Rosepointe Cottage also offers a wide array of soups, salads and sandwiches to satisfy anyone’s taste or
fancy. Some of the most popular selections are pumpkin based corn chowder. Their chicken salad and
chicken potpie are equally popular. We recommend that you also look beyond your old favorites and
explore some of the unique selections that are available. The menu is changed twice a year and specials
are often available. All of the delicacies are made fresh by the staff.
One of the more unique aspects of Rosepointe Cottage is the exquisite gifts that may be found in their
upstairs gift shop. While many teahouses set aside a small section for you to find a remembrance,
Marianne has three wonderful rooms filled with a selection of truly fine gifts for the discriminating gift giver.
Take the time to browse through the rooms, as this is truly part of the teahouse experience. You may also
find that special gift that will help you celebrate the significant events and people in your life.
Rosepointe Cottage is the perfect place to spend an afternoon enjoying the comfort and camaraderie of
friends and family. However, four times each year, they also have Dinner Parties in which they serve a High
Tea with somewhat heartier meals. If you are planning a dinner party or a shower, they will open during
the evening for parties of 20 or more people.
Although settings are limited to 36 people, they are able to accommodate larger church and community
tour groups by having multiple sittings while one group is visiting the shops and antique houses on
Chardon square.
Rosepointe Cottage Tea Room is a place of tranquility where you can enjoy a spot of tea and a good meal
with while making memories with those you care most about.

H
istoric downtown Willoughby, Ohio has been reborn; it is
now a trendy shopping district with fabulous restaurants
and cute boutiques. Since 2002, an important part of this
rebirth has been Lady Charlton’s Tea Parlour.
Lady Charlton’s is steeped in atmosphere and social opportunity. It is ideally
situated for a quick lunch or to leisurely slow things down a little, to sip
and savor life. Somehow, taking tea together encourages an atmosphere of
intimacy and civility, a time when ladies wore fashionable hats and manners
were a way of life.
The Proprietresses, Janet Dell and Carol Clark, have created such a retreat. In
fact, they have put together the most authentic Victorian tea parlour we have
found. They are truly passionate about tea. This passion started well before
they opened their tea parlour. They spent years of research and preparation
before they opened the doors. They attended the Magnolia and Ivy Tea School
to hone their knowledge, and they continue to be students of their trade by
attending yearly tea conferences
Don’t be fooled by the exterior storefront façade. Upon entering you are
transported back to a more elegant time – to a true Victorian Tea Parlour. When
you enter you first pass through a thoroughly charming gift shop which you
will want to spend some time in before you leave.
A flowered trellis separates the gift shop from the tea parlour. The room is
graciously appointed with dolls, lace and it even had a cozy fireplace setting
with a table for two in front of it. Janet and Carol managed to find the balance
between having an elegant parlour without being too feminine for husbands
and boyfriends. If available, we recommend that you sit by the fireplace, it
really adds to the experience.
Their attention to detail is striking. You will notice that on the linen covered
tables; there are mixed sets of lovely English bone china teacups. They only
use fine bone china from England, as they believe it best recreates the
Victorian experience and presents the best cup of tea. Knowing that their
guests will peek anyway, they rest their cups upside down on the saucer so
they can easily read the heritage of each cup.

We were delighted at finding a pretty assortment of colored sugar cubes shaped as flowers in
the sugar bowl. Their selection of background music added a peaceful tranquility to the room.
The menu is quite varied for a teahouse. They have an interesting assortment of salads,
sandwiches, quiches and desserts. The portions and variety of the menu explains why they
have a healthy take out trade. One of their most popular selections is a chicken puff pastry,
which is a baked boneless breast of chicken infused with fresh cream, broccoli, sweet red
peppers, garlic and cheese.
However, the true test of any Tea Parlour is their Afternoon Tea. Here Lady Charlton’s is at its
best. You are presented with a pot of your favorite blend of tea, a cup of soup, their famous
scones with lemon and Devonshire cream, an assortment of finger sandwiches and savories,
delectable desserts, tea breads and fresh seasonal fruit for only $20 per person. Due to the
elaborate nature, 48-hour advance reservations are requested.
Their attention to detail of course extends to the tea. They have over 42 different varieties that
they procure from a master tea broker. We would strongly recommend that on at least one
occasion, you try their signature tea, “Lady Charlton’s Blend.” This exclusive blend has a hint of
coconut and delicate flowers. It is unique and delicious and truly one of our favorite teas.
What I simply loved about Lady Charlton’s is that every aspect of the tea experience can be
recreated at home. If you simply loved the music or that particular bone china cup and saucer,
you may purchase it (even right off the table). Their lovely gift shop has all the accoutrements
you could want for yourself or for that special someone to cherish. They have all their loose tea,
a unique assortment of foods, English bone china teacups, saucers, teapots, jewelry, books and
magazines. They have a special niche set aside that is dedicated to Red Hat Ladies who often
frequent Lady Charlton’s for their monthly meetings.
One of the best times to visit Lady Charlton’s may be during one of the many events that
Historic Downtown Willoughby hosts each year. The Willoughby Arts Festival in July and the
Holiday Stroll in December are two of the most popular occasions to spend some leisurely
time taking tea. Lady Charlton’s also has their own special events periodically, which offer a fun
twist to the overall experience. Each quarter they have a character show connecting people to
the past by having a woman present her Victorian Life while dressed in period clothing. Lady
Charlton’s Tea Parlour is also perfect for a bridal shower, private party or corporate event, as the
room is quite spacious, seating about fifty.
Lady Charlton’s Tea Parlour provides a forgotten realm of luxury and old world ambiance which
allows you to leisurely gather with family, friends or business associates, in a manner that
creates memories and traditions.
Upon entering you are
transported back to a more
elegant time – to a true
Victorian Tea Parlour.

Family
The case for
Family Dinners
By: Stacy Evans, Staff Writer
“TV Dinners were created by the Communists to undermine the family…” or so
I was told growing up. Yes, I envied all those kids who got to watch their favorite
TV show while they ate. It didn’t matter that in those days the food in the TV
dinners was cardboard. They got to watch TV! I had to hear about how great the
program was the next day. We didn’t have VCR or DVR in those days, so if you
missed that program, it was gone forever.
I had to sit at a real table with my entire family and eat real food with vegetables.
We were all required to tell the family what happened during our day…. Yes
actually talk to them. Boy I miss those days!
You would think that with this rich Italian heritage of family and food that I would
have learned something about the magic and congeniality of breaking bread
and sharing a meal with those you care most about. Imagine my horror when I
realized that most of our family meals were being “enjoyed” separately mostly
while watching TV. Everyone would heat up his own meal in the microwave at
different times and retreat to his own corner of the house. Sure we ate together
at times, but the after school activities, the long work hours slowly and silently
gave way to the convenience of fast food eaten in the car or frozen dinners.
I found that I was not alone. The Norman Rockwell picture of a family sitting
around the dinner table most of us remember growing up is no longer the norm.
According to several surveys, 30 to 40 percent of families do not eat dinner
together five to seven nights a week.
I wish I could say as an enlightened parent that I realized this on my own, but
it took a number of studies to show me that what I was told growing up was
right (Don’t you hate when that happens?). The fact is that the demise of the
traditional dinner was undermining the family.
A study published by The Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine in
2004 found that frequent family meals were associated with a lower risk of
smoking, drinking and using marijuana; with a lower incidence of depressive
symptoms and suicidal thoughts; and with better grades. Columbia News, CASA
2000 Teen Survey reported the increased risk was 61% higher.
Another study last year, by the National Center on Addiction and Substance
Abuse at Columbia University, found that teenagers (12- to 17-year-old) who
reported eating two or fewer dinners a week with family members were more
than one and a half times as likely to smoke, drink or use illegal substances than
were teenagers who had five to seven family dinners.
The family dinner hour also provides
nutritional benefits for busy families.
For parents who worry that their kids are not eating right, regular meal times
offer a chance to prepare a variety of healthy dishes. So with all these clear
benefits what is stopping us from doing what is clearly best for our kids? TIME!
The next two articles will explore some ideas and practical ways that every
family can adopt to make family meal times a regular activity.
Tips from the National
Center on Abuse and
Addiction’s Family Day website:
www.casafamilyday.org
n	Start the pattern of family dinners when children
	 are young.
n	Encourage your children to create menu ideas and
	 participate in meal preparation.
n	Turn off the TV and let your answering machine
	 answer calls during dinnertime.
n	Talk about what happened in everyone’s day:
	 school, work, extracurricular activities or
	 current events.
n	Ask about their biggest challenge.
n	Share a childhood memory.
n	Establish a routine to start and end each meal.
n	Light candles, say grace or tell a story.
n	After dinner play a board game or serve dessert to
encourage the family to continue the conversation.
n	Keep conversation positive and make sure everyone
	 gets a chance to speak.

Food
We’ve all heard it. It is enough to make you feel guilty as to why you can’t spend 30 minutes of your
time for the most important people of your life? If only it were true!
You soon realize that 30 minutes does not account for the real time required to prepare and plan
the meal. First you need to determine what you want to make, prepare a grocery list, shop for the
ingredients, return to the store a second time to pick up the forgotten ingredients (or send your
husband, like I do.), chop and saute and finally cleaning up after preparing the meal. If you are anything
like me, it’s not the time to actually prepare the meal but all the related tasks that come before or after.
The research is clear, “the family that eats together thrives together.” The only question is how to
accomplish this without the benefit of a stay at home mom. I decided to approach the problem in the
same way that I would for any dilemma I come across in business. Establish a goal and set parameters
for the solution.
While I was looking for something truly quick and easy, I decided that ordering pizza or getting carryout
from Applebee’s or Friday’s was a copout. That’s fine once in awhile, but I wanted my kids to grow up
and tell their children, “When I was a kid, we had home cooked meals.” It had to be nutritious. Most of
all it had to be affordable. I’m not ready to hire a private chef.
My first attempt was to call Mom and see if she could be hired out. That, however, would create its
own set of problems.
My second attempt was to prepare all the meals in advance. It was certainly nutritious, affordable and
something I could be proud of, but it actually took more time than I had to spend. By the time I went
through all the related preparation steps, (planning, shopping, preparing, shopping again and cleaning)
I really wasn’t saving any time.
A quick, easy, balanced nutritious
family meal prepared in
30 minutes…

Finally, Cleveland Woman Magazine is pleased to announce that starting this issue we have two new co-editors of our Food Department, Loretta Paganini and her daughter Stefanie Paganini will grace our publication each issue with articles, insights and recipes. As most Clevelanders are aware the name “Loretta Paganini” is synonymous with the Culinary Arts. She is Cleveland’s Queen of Culinary who has been both an innovator and a fixture bringing to Cleveland the very best in culinary education. In addition to The Loretta Paganini School of Cooking, (LPSC) she recently opened the International Culinary Arts and Sciences Institute (ICAS) which is the first professional culinary school in Ohio. Stefanie Paganini is the great new force in the LPSC. Stefanie holds many titles at LPSC, Inc. including Marketing and Human Resource Director and Chief Legal Counsel. She received her Culinary Certificate from ICASI in Pastry and will graduate in December with her Pastry Arts Diploma. She currently teaches a number of classes in the recreational program at the school and has appeared on local television programs. So pour yourself a cool drink, find a cozy chair and enjoy. • 6. CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE Barbara A. Reynolds serves as President of Realty One Real Living. In a profession that at one time was historically dominated by men, Barbara has risen through the ranks of Real Living, the largest residential real estate firm in the Midwest, the fourth-largest in the nation (with nearly $9 billion in annual sales). Our selection of Barbara Reynolds as the Premiere Woman of Cleveland is due in great part to her perseverance and dedication to her profession and the success she obtained at Realty One- Real Living, but she is also being recognized due to her efforts to transform her company and the real estate industry and her commitment to Cleveland itself. Good Ol’ Boy No Longer It wasn’t too long ago in the late 1960’s that the real estate business was predominantly a good old boy network. In fact it was during the 60’s that the real estate industry saw its first woman realtor. Even when Barbara started her professional career in real estate in 1978 less than 21 percent of real estate agents were women. Location… Location… Location And the location that Barbara Reynolds believes in is Cleveland, Ohio. Premiere WomAn of Cleveland Series By: Stacy Evans, Staff Writer
  • 7. CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE Well the industry has certainly changed. A 1996 survey of the National Association of Realtors, which has 720,000 members, showed that 54 percent of the association’s residential realtors were women. Barbara Reynolds’ journey is a testament to the important role women now hold not only as realtors but as the principal decision makers in purchases of residential property. Barbara Reynolds’ journey into the real estate industry was a somewhat reluctant, unintentional venture. In 1978 she was teaching dance and gymnastics at the Euclid YMCA when she began real estate courses simply for the opportunity to learn something new. She never planned to pursue a career but at the urging of friends she started her career that year with Hill Top Realty which later became Realty One. Even though she began her career during one of the most turbulent times in the real estate industry (double-digit interest rates), she excelled at her profession. Over the next two decades she progressed from a sales associate, to an office and district manager, and then to Vice President of both Marketing and Relocation. In 1997 Barbara was promoted to Senior Vice President, General Sales Manager, overseeing the management, growth and development of Realty One’s 1500-member sales team. She was promoted to Executive Vice President, General Sales Manager in March, 2001, and to her present position in February, 2002. We were particularly interested in Barbara’s insights as to what it takes to be successful in the real estate profession and why it is a good career choice for a woman. No More Glass Ceilings Barbara was quick to point out that in the real estate industry there is not really a glass ceiling. “Maybe at one time there was a perception that women cannot sell real estate, but those days are long gone. There are no glass barriers in real estate sales. Real estate is commission based and your wage is based on your job performance.” In fact, the 2002 report by the U.S. General Accounting Office, “A New Look Through the Glass Ceiling: Where are the Women?” found the real estate industry had less disparity between the earnings of men and women and the number of women management positions are consistent to the number of women in the profession. Women Have What it Takes Barbara believes that the real estate profession is well suited to women as they are naturally endowed with attributes that it takes to be successful. “Women care about people and have the ability to counsel and nurture; they are natural listeners and intuitive negotiators. These are all the skills necessary to be a successful sales person. We can train them in what they need to know about real estate. The important part is having the heart and instinct in dealing with people.” Training is Key Barbara believes training is an important element of what makes a great real estate agent and wants her real estate agents to be the best trained in the industry. When she moved her office to downtown Cleveland, she incorporated a state of the art training facility. In addition to the normal training all real estate agents receive to get licensed, Realty One Real Living requires all new agents to complete an exclusive training program in the proper handling of the home buying and selling process. “I believe we have the finest training in the real estate industry. It prepares our agents to be immediately experienced in the many areas of real estate. Our new agents are taught lessons in ethics, policy, and basic listing and selling techniques. They have an army of resources at their disposal to insure their success and that of their clients,” said Reynolds. Cleveland and the surrounding communities are blessed with inspiring women who have contributed to the fabric of our great city. Whether their contribution is associated with their business savvy, their artistic endeavors or their philanthropy, each has made a positive mark on our community and the lives of each of us. We would like to showcase and honor some of these women each issue with our Premiere Woman of Cleveland Series. We hope that their stories, their struggles and their successes will serve as an inspiration to us all. In each issue, we will highlight a woman who has had an impact on our city, business, community or our beliefs. We hope that you find their stories inspirational and maybe find an idea or two along the way that will help you achieve your own personal success story. Barbara serves on the National Association of Realtors’ Executive Committee, and was named one of the “Top Women in Real Estate” by National Relocation and Real Estate magazine. A founding board member and chairperson of the Mentor Schools Foundation, she was also named to Ohio’s Governor’s Commission of Elementary and Secondary Education. Cleveland Magazine has cited her as one of “Cleveland’s Most Interesting People.”  She was most recently honored as a “Woman of Note” by Crain’s’ Cleveland. We welcome your nominations for future articles on Premiere Woman of Cleveland. You may visit us online at: www.clevelandwomanonline.com/nominations to give us your suggestions. • 8. Look Up When asked what advice she had for women starting out in this profession, Barbara recommended that you “look up.” Find someone that you want to emulate someone who has already “made it” and seek them out as a mentor. In fact Barbara recommended that you have a number of mentors, some in and out of your profession. The key to a successful mentor is to ask for feedback and listen to them. Barbara said what helped her in her career and life were a number of mentors she has had over the years both in and out of the profession, both men and women. She believes that women as a whole need to do a better job reaching out and raising each other up. There has been a presumption that women are harder on other women. What we really need to do is network better so we can learn from one another and bring our strengths to the tables to assist others up the ladder as well. She is committed to making Realty One Real Living a top down organization that sets the standard for the industry. “We know our business not because we have a woman head but because we understand the industry, where it is going and we meet those needs through education and innovation.” It is a belief that threads throughout the organization. Committed to Cleveland On her decision to move their offices from Independence, Ohio to downtown Cleveland Barbara said that there was no question there had to be a move as there was too much room (at the Independence facility). “Real Living wants to be a major player in this region and unless Clevelanders’ believe in Cleveland, it will not get back.” “We wanted to be in the heart of our city,’’ Reynolds said. “We believe in downtown’s tremendous economic potential. As Northern Ohio’s leading residential real estate, we wanted to prove our commitment to Cleveland’s growth. This exciting move also proves Realty One Real Living’s commitment to being the most innovative, forward- thinking real estate firm in the area.” Women Are the Driving Force There is no question that women will continue to be a predominant influence in the decision making process of buying a home. Historically, women have been the driving force in selecting the home. The home is the center of the family life, and even if the woman works outside the home they are still the heart and soul of the family. The reality is that single women have become the second largest group of home buyers (21%) behind couples who comprise 59% of the sales. Realty One Real Living has long recognized women’s influence on home purchasing for years, but has recently started courting the women’s market more directly by a series of ads that identify with women in various transition phases of their lives. Barbara Reynolds’ understanding of the real estate industry, the demographics and of Cleveland has set the standard for her industry. That and her commitment to Cleveland have won her a place as our Premiere Woman of Cleveland. One final admonition from Barbara, “If you are not passionate about what you are doing… Don’t.” Based on that it is a safe bet to assume that she will continue leading Realty One Real Living and being a force in the Cleveland Market for years to come. If you are not passionate about what you are doing …Don’t. CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE Premiere WomAn of Cleveland Series

  • 10. 10 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE Health By: Paul F.Vanek Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S Cosmetic Surgery, Mentor, Ohio It’s all in the eyes Eyelid Surgery and Refreshing Your Look “Are you tired? Didn’t you sleep well?  Burning the candle at both ends?” If you are responding to those questions by your friends or co-workers then they may be hinting that your eyes look tired even if you don’t feel that way. The tired appearance from excess skin folds over the eyes is a common concern for those who prefer to look how they feel. For the person who may contemplate doing something about it, the typical goal is to restore the patient’s tired looking eyes to a more youthful appearance. The well-rested look from a lower and/or upper lid blepharoplasty turns the clock back by ten or more years, allowing the younger, energetic appearance to transcend from within. Obviously cosmetic surgery plays a huge role in a person’s appearance. Facial rejuvenation works in tandem with internal levels of energy and vitality. It has some wonderful side effects in regards to improved self-esteem and self-confidence. At the time of an office consultation, the surgeon should discuss your medical, smoking and sun damage history, including any previous surgery. These factors and your genetics help to determine what is appropriate for helping you look more rejuvenated. Listening to each patient and knowing result goals will dictate the proper course of treatment or procedure that will make the most sense for each individual. Often an excellent first step is to begin a skin care program that is tailored to your needs. As we enter each new decade of life the needs of our skin changes. Those changes seen in your face as a result of your life circumstances will be addressed and a recommendation for a skin rejuvenation course will be discussed. These steps can be begun the day of the consultation with instructions on a home program regimen that can have refreshing effects on the skin in a few weeks. Timing Many people ask, “Am I too young for an eyelid lift?” I have seen and restored tired eyes on people in their twenty’s and beyond. One 26 year old male brought his mother with him and she said she’s been hearing his complaining of his tired baggy eyes since he was a 13 year old. He was an excellent anatomic candidate and benefited from a
  • 11. 11 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE Health 1-hour eyelid lift that left no visible scar (it was done through the conjunctival lining approach). Now 6 years later he still looks refreshed and is “happy in his own skin.” He and I both felt that he looked far older than his age before his surgery. He now feels more confident and reflects this in his energetic business and personal pursuits since his surgery. The point is that it is the anatomic condition of the eyelid tissue that is the problem. Age is often, but not exclusively the contributor. As we age there will be excess tissue laxity that will manifest. If a person has an eyelid lift in her 40’s it is not a forgone conclusion that “she will need another lift” in the future. A 50 or 60 year old who says they are beginning to look like one of their older siblings or a parent have an insight into their own anatomic future. It is a reliable indicator for them to “benchmark” themselves. Some 44 year olds say that they’ll wait until they are 50 to have their eyes done. Of course they may add “or until I start looking like my (6 year older) brother, whichever comes first.” Each person will have that trigger of appearance that let’s them know it’s time for them to look into having a more refreshed look. Expectations and Recovery With the decision to improve one’s appearance comes a host of expectations. Those expectations should be realistically reviewed in the context of your consultation. You should be shown in the mirror the effects of a reduced amount of skin in the upper lids. With gentle closure of the eye, the incision is placed in the crease above the lashes of the upper lid, called the tarsal fold. A woven suture is placed under the skin surface so there are no suture marks left once you heal. The incision on the lower lid is placed exactly where the eyelashes meet the lower lid skin. The muscle is suspended and repositioned to a position of youthfulness and excess or herniated fat is trimmed. Skin excess is tailored and the suture line is closed with a woven stitch that is pulled out at 5 to 7 days after surgery. From the first days the effects are readily apparent. A more refreshed and less “operated on” look takes a few weeks to emerge after the initial swelling occurs. Obviously bruising is a consideration during the first 1 or 2 weeks. But this can be covered by make-up within the first few days. Bruising typically resolves in 1 to 3 weeks. Some medications that cause bruising are restricted pre-operatively. These will be reviewed at the time of our discussion. Patients need to massage their surgical sites to take advantage of the natural softening effects our bodies provide us. The stiffness of incisions and the outcome of the procedure can be improved upon with good scar management. Mirror Imaging Software™ One of the primary goals of the initial consultation is to determine what you want. It is then your surgeon’s job to realistically teach you about what he/she can deliver. There are several tools which can be utilized to reach an understanding of what you want. The first is carefully listening to what you say when you describe what you want to achieve. Once the outcome goals are defined and discussed in front of a mirror during the consultation process, your digital photographs are then obtained for review and study. These photographs can be “morphed” or modified in order to simulate the possible outcome after swelling has subsided and healing has occurred. While not a guarantee of a result, it enhances the discussion of likely outcomes and provides you with a realistic representation of what to expect. This Mirror Imaging™ Software has been a feature of the consultation process for facial rejuvenation procedures for years. Showing your image with the changes discussed allows you and your surgeon to be comfortable. Your unmodified photograph in several views can be shown next to the digitally changed photographs for side-by-side comparison. The ability to obtain a surgical result is then discussed in the context of your features compared with the results seen in pre- and post-operative photographs of other actual patients with similar concerns who have already healed. In this combined method, you will be educated about the architectural features of your face and the results you wish to obtain. Many patients remark that they can see their own areas of concern in the photographs of others, and are reassured that the lid lift procedures will address those concerns. Risks No surgical procedure is without risk. These risks will be reviewed in detail, with particular attention to the components that apply to your particular medical and anatomic circumstances. The consultation process is a called a process for a reason in my practice. It is structured in order to provide you with the tools to make an informed choice for yourself. “I want to look like I feel.” Paul Vanek, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons® (ASPS) and a busy cosmetic surgeon in Mentor, Ohio. • 12. 12 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE Health By: Scott L. Rose, D.D.S. M any people suffer from a variety of head, neck and shoulder pains, and headaches. A lot of people accept this as a normal sign of aging. An equal number of people have tried many types of treatments and medications only to be disappointed time and time again by poor outcomes. But did you know that some of these aches and pains may be caused by an incorrect biting position? That’s right! If your bite is off, the muscles of your face may go into chronic spasms, or not be working at their ideal length. These muscles may be overworking in order to maintain your present bite position. Different muscles work together to open and close your jaw. They are also used for chewing, and swallowing. These muscles are not only in the area of your jaw joint. The jaw positioning muscles run up and down the neck, through the cheeks, into the forehead, and around the ears. Some even wrap around the skull. Every time you chew and swallow, the teeth must either come together or come very close to each other. Therefore, where the teeth want the muscles to be and where the muscles want to be may be totally different. Our bodies can accommodate only so much. When the muscles can no longer accommodate – this translates into aches, pains, and headaches. When muscles do not get a chance to rest, they soon suffer from poor circulation. This leads to a lack of needed oxygen and the accumulation of waste products of metabolism. This fuels the cycle of pain. Your habitual bite may not be what is best for you. Even if you have great teeth, your bite may be off. So even if you do not have “common” dental problems, this does not mean that your bite is not affecting your overall health. Occlusal disease can create just as many problems if not more than dental decay. A bad tooth effects the one tooth. A bad bite can effect the entire mouth, muscles, joints, and posture. Taking the Biteout of your Head, Neck Jaw Joint Pains Neuromuscular Dentistry is the art and science of using the relaxed position of the muscles of the head and neck to properly place the jaw in its optimal position.
  • 13. 13 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE Years of clinical experience and research has shown Neuromuscular Dentistry to be effective in treating patients with a variety of head and neck pain, including TMJ. This approach differs greatly from the traditional type of dentistry. In this approach the teeth are treated and assumes the muscles and the jaw joints will accommodate to the body’s habitual bite. In this traditional method, treating teeth by restorative procedures (crowns, bridges, and fillings) or common orthodontics (straightening teeth) are often done without accurately determining a correct jaw posture and a proper vertical dimension. A physiologic resting position and body posture is often overlooked and not even considered as an important part of the whole dental system. Not taking into account the muscles when diagnosing and treatment planning is like baking a cake and not putting in the eggs. State of the art technology allows for the objective evaluation of the muscles and various other factors that may be affecting your bite, causing headaches and other facial pains. These tests include Electromyography, 3-dimensional jaw tracking and Joint Sonography. All three diagnostic procedures are painless and non-invasive. Yet they give the Neuromuscular Dentist the data to make a good diagnosis. The Center for Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry is one of the few dental offices in the country to have this state of the art technology and sophisticated computerization to collect the necessary data. Once it is determined that the bite is off, the fabrication and use of a dental orthotic to be worn on the lower teeth helps stabilize the correct bite position. The new bite is determined by data that shows where the muscles are most relaxed. Once wearing the removable orthotic, most patients find this alleviates many of their problems. In fact many patients are able to go off of or greatly reduce pain medications within the first couple of weeks. The difference between the Neuromuscular orthotic and other dental splints is that this is made to a specific relaxed bite, and not a generic made up bite. Once the symptoms subside and the patient and dentist are satisfied with the new bite, final treatment options can be discussed. Neuromuscular Dental Therapy is also used for Cosmetic procedures. When you restore patients to their new relaxed position, this also restores facial balance and harmony. Not only will you feel great, you will look great too! Those patients that are seeking state of the art care and treatment, or those patients that are tired of educated guesses or, trial-and-error treatment protocols, should re-evaluate by what philosophy they would like their care and treatment to be guided. Choose a doctor who’s success is in the philosophy of taking a neuromuscular approach in all facets of dentistry. Health

When PTO took effect a year ago, many were skeptical of breaking away from the traditional “sick days, vacation days” policy. Today, according to employees and management, if exit interviews are any indication, PTO is a big hit. Eighty-percent of employees taking part in 2005 exit interviews had nothing but praise. “Some employees requested PTO even before it was implemented,” said a Vice President who implemented PTO about a year ago. “We looked at PTO several years ago and put it on the back burner because more study was needed. We revisited it in early 2004 and a sampling of managers and employees showed a lot of interest, so we went forward.” Helps attracts new talent Companies offering PTO have a huge competitive edge in recruiting, retaining employees and staying current with the market. “PTO better fits the needs of our management and workforce. • 16. 16 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE Finance A s the baby boomers begin to retire this year, we are very aware that most of us will live to a very ripe old age. Longevity is increasing as medical advances and technology keep us alive longer. We want to live healthy long lives and most of know that an annual medical exam is important. We know that this exam can uncover illnesses before the physical symptoms occur. Is your blood pressure high? Then take this pill before it becomes a problem. Is your cholesterol too high? Well here’s another pill to take before it becomes a problem. Are you overweight and sedentary? If only this solution was as easy as taking those little pills. And even if we don’t follow our doctor’s advice, most of us go back next year or the year after to monitor our health. But how many of us pay this much attention to our financial health? After all who wants to live a long healthy life broke without any money? Let’s take a look at how a financial exam compares to a medical exam. Gathering Data – the old saying is so true here. Garbage in and garbage out. Collecting valid and relevant data is a skill that comes from experience and a qualified financial advisor will know the questions to ask. Honesty and accuracy are essential elements at this step. Defining Goals - When asked what was the most important factor for financial success most people will tell you that it’s marrying well, a good education and a great career or winning the lottery. The truth is the #1 factor for financial success is clearly defined goals. These are logical goals that are straight from your values, meaning that they are possible to achieve. Analyzing Data – Developing the financial statements that illustrate your present situation will give you and your advisor a snapshot into your present situation. The Diagnosis – what is keeping you from achieving the prosperity you want and deserve? Poor financial habits are often a symptom of underlying feelings of inadequacy, deprivation or a desire for attention. Working with someone you trust can help you discover and then rectify these issues. Observations and Recommendations - Your advisor will give you plenty and it is up to you to take the medicine. He or she will also help you prioritize the steps you need to take. When you go back for your follow-up meeting, another analysis should be made to determine if you are on track to reach your goals. Bad debt is spending money you don’t have for something you don’t need. Just because you want it. If you are so far into debt that you cannot make your payments, consider a meeting with a credit counselor and work out a payment plan. Diets don’t work and neither do budgets - Counting calories and pennies is tedious and defeating. Lifestyle changes are called for when you are either over eating or over spending. Work with an advisor that you trust who understands in a non judgmental manner what you are going through. Personally I am looking forward to my later years. • 18. 18 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE Absolutely the best form of advertising there is. No sales pressure, no credibility problems, and very low cost of sales. People refer customers to you as a favor to their friends, the customers. If it’s done as a favor to you, that’s usually a bonus. Think about it. The last time you recommended a movie, or a business, did you do it as a favor to the person you were talking to or the business you were talking about? The person, in all likelihood. A friend or business acquaintance. And if your recommendation was to fall through, you lose credibility. They know that. You’re trying to help them and putting the value of your opinion on the line when you do. That means something. Referrals have to be earned. People won’t tell the ones that will listen most, their family and friends, to use your service if they know it’s no good. Once you have earned it, it should come naturally. But it often doesn’t. Why? Simply put, people forget. They’re busy and your business isn’t their top priority. Referrals are the absolute best way to make sure that you keep the new business coming in. That helps you to spend more time working than selling. And it means time spent with people who know what you’re all about instead of cold calling! Word of mouth advertising. Spreading the word. Personal recommendations. Putting in a good word. And a dozen other ways to say it... Referrals. 10Secrets to Getting More Referrals Business refer me
  • 19. 19 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE 1. Ask for them. The simplest way in the world to get referrals is to ask for them. Whenever someone compliments you on a job, let them know you appreciate it, and that you’ll do just as good a job for their friends. Tell them that you’d appreciate it if they could spread the word if they really like your work. You may assume that people would tell their friends, but it’s amazing the difference it makes if you give them that gentle reminder. People like to help those that do a good job for them. It makes them feel smart, and they feel good helping out their friends, who just happen to be your next customers. 2. Trade them. Make a deal with other businesspeople you know. If you know they do good work, offer to tell people about them every chance you get, and ask them to return the favor. It’s a good way to start building relationships and it tells you what they really think of your work. If they agree, make sure you keep an eye out for people to refer them to. Keep up your end of the bargain, and the odds are good they’ll keep theirs. 3. Reward them. The idea of `finders fees’ is very common in big business, but it is frequently ignored in small business. It shouldn’t be. Make it known that when someone sends you a job, there’s something in it for them. Perhaps a set fee, or a percentage of the total. If they send you a new customer and you’re in retail, maybe a discount on their next purchase. Whatever you do, make sure it’s something worthwhile for them and sensible for you. $10 for a $25,000 job is insulting. $10 for a one time retail customer buying a used tennis racket might be too much. In retail it is best to go with discounts. That encourages the customer to make additional purchases, or increases their loyalty as they see what else they can do with the money. Anything that expands the customer base for a retail outlet is worth rewarding. 4. Give them. Want someone to send you referrals? Send some their way. Nothing will start the process and make it solid like having them know that you’re ready to return the favor. So return it in advance. Some people will send you referrals after this simply because they know it’s not going to be a one way street. Others because they appreciate the thought you showed them. And some will do it out of a feeling of owing you something. Very few will ignore it. 5. Print them. Use testimonials in your literature and advertising. Some people will wonder if they are the only ones that really liked your service, or if you did a good job for them just to get some extra business. If they see that others also appreciate your work and were willing to say so in print, they’ll feel more comfortable in stepping out of their shell and making their own satisfaction known. Some people need the knowledge that they’re not the only ones who think a certain way before they’ll say so. 6. Give out more business cards. Yes, they do make a difference. If someone has your card, or hopefully more than one of them, they will do *something* with it. If you have asked them when they’re in the right frame of mind to pass it along, they will. One of the best things you can do with business cards is to give more than one. If a person has just told you how much they like your work, hand them 5 business cards. Tell them something like: “Well, I certainly appreciate the good word. If you think you’d be doing them a favor, maybe you could pass these on to people you know when they need work done. Make sure you keep one for yourself in case you need to get ahold of me, though!” Yes, this works. It’s different, so they remember. And it’s personal, so it matters to them. 7. Community service. People are always willing to recommend those they see as leaders. Public service projects are a great way to become that leader and give something back to your community at the same time. Make sure you don’t do this just for publicity, though. Find a cause you personally believe in and work with that. It will be much more satisfying for you, and more productive for the group you help. And you won’t come across as a phony. If you’re helping with a cause you believe in, people will see that you care. And they’ll realize you will probably care as much about your work as your cause. Here’s 10 of the absolute best ways to get more referrals
  • 20. 10Secrets to Getting More Referrals 8. Sponsor something. A sports team, a fund-raising drive or even a cookbook for a school. This falls into nearly the same category as community service, except that it is seen as advertising. It has the same effect. It keeps your name in front of the community and gets people talking about you and your business. What you sponsor should be dictated by the type of business you’re in. A doctor will do well sponsoring a marathon or charity golf tournament, but perhaps not a taverns dart team. Sports bars and construction companies do well with baseball teams, but might not do as well with a bake-off. Match your clientele with the activity. Don’t think this works? Ask the people who sponsor team after team, for years. They’re not doing it solely for fun. Although it can get to be enough fun to be worth it. 9. Be helpful. Yes, something that simple. People appreciate someone who is helpful. If they appreciate you, they’ll remember you and want to return the favor. Again, do this where it’s appropriate and where it’s meant sincerely. Like most things that lead to referrals, this is something that becomes an end in itself before long. 10. Join a networking group. You may be familiar with the idea of networking groups. They get together on a regular basis and exchange leads. These groups are composed of professionals who are checked for integrity before being accepted for membership so that each member is sure that they are only recommending quality businesses to their family and friends. Joining one of these groups is like having a troop of professional salespeople armed with the best closing tool available. Personal recommendations. If your business is run with integrity and you back up your work, it’s definitely an option worth pursuing. 20 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE

  • 22. 22 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE W hen it comes to hiring a landscape company to do an installation, or help you with the maintenance on your property, there are countless companies to choose from. But how do you know if you have contracted with a quality firm? Ultimately, most customers are looking for that one special company that has honesty and integrity, listens to their needs, is upfront about costs, and has the expertise and artistic talents to do quality work. Here are some great ways to determine the level of service and expertise you can expect. Before calling any of the landscape firms that are on your list, check the internet. Most quality landscape firms will have high quality websites that contain photos of their work, descriptions of their services, and explain how they operate. Next, you’ll want to contact organizations such as The Ohio Landscapers Association (O.L.A.). The quality landscape firms will be members of their state’s associations, and the great ones are often members of the national associations such as The Professional Landcare Network (P.L.A.N.E.T.). Many of these firms will employ staff which has also been tested and certified by such organizations. Once you have done your homework, you are ready to call a few companies. Keep in mind; you’ll need to look for different criteria for different types of services. INSTALLATIONS If you are contemplating re-doing your existing landscape or installing a new feature such as a patio, deck or waterfall, you’ll want to first make sure that the company you work with employs Registered Landscape Architects and Landscape Designers. These are known as design/build landscape firms because they have the ability to both design and install a landscape. Not all landscape firms have this ability, and the first step to any successful landscape installation is having a firm that can prepare a landscape design or plan. To prepare a good plan, the company will schedule an appointment with a landscape architect, designer or a project director on their staff to meet with you, walk your property, determine your vision for your yard and ask you a lot of questions. These questions will cover a wide array of topics such as; “How long do you plan to remain in your home,” “What are your favorite blooming colors,” “What is your favorite season,” “Do you enjoy bird watching,” “Are there any existing water issues on the property.” This kind of company cares about your lifestyle, cares about your investment, and wants your yard to be a reflection of you. Make sure the company you work with also prepares a sketch of how your finished landscape will appear. Not everyone understands a blue-print and how the results will translate; there are companies that will artistically render the appearance of your final project during the design phase. Companies like this typically charge for their design work separately from the installation, however the added cost and planning up front always saves you money and headaches once the installation begins. You’ll end up with a landscape that thrives because sun angles and wind direction has been considered, the soil has been studied and there is a plan for its amendment, and water issues have been examined. Ultimately, you’ll have By: Jonas G. Pattie The Pattie Group, Inc. how to find a quality company
  • 23. 23 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE Home a landscape that improves with age, plants that thrive, and spaces that are user friendly and fit the home’s unique character. Quality companies will also discuss your budget up-front. The best companies can educate you on cost very early in the process and explain various multi-year phasing options. You should feel very comfortable and know what you’re getting into. It is counter productive for all involved if a budget is not established. Once the design process is complete and the cost of installation has been settled, the actual implementation begins. Design/build landscape firms employ certified project managers, horticulturists, craftsmen, and technicians so they are able to install all the aspects of your design including wood structures, stone, paver and concrete patios, drainage systems, gardens and plantings, pools, waterfalls, lighting and irrigation. Companies like these are hiring “career landscapers” and “career craftsmen,” not the high school kid down the street. Finally, these quality companies always guarantee their work. Most of them are proactive about their guarantees too, handling problems and issues often before you “the client” are even aware of them. MAINTENANCE Your landscape is a big investment…a living and breathing investment. As with all living things, special care and attention is needed for lawns, trees and shrubs to remain healthy and beautiful, and for water features, irrigation systems, and outdoor lighting to maintain optimum performance. Without the proper attention and care, your landscape will ultimately decline. When trying to find a quality maintenance company, which hopefully your design/ build company provides as well, you’ll want to ensure that their definition of maintenance extends beyond mowing lawns, and weeding the beds. A good firm should offer services ranging anywhere from lawn mowing and bed work to selective pruning, fertilizations, irrigation management, water feature care, and snow removal. Beyond certifications, and reputation, the fastest way to find out if you’re dealing with a good maintenance firm is to ask about their pruning practices. Pruning is both an art and a science. It is an incredibly important part of maintaining a healthy landscape, and there are very few companies that do it correctly. If your landscape firm’s idea of pruning is pulling out the electric hedge trimmers and turning your beautiful plants into round balls, rectangles and squares, you have the wrong company. Unless you have an overly formal landscape or a special hedge on your property, hedge trimmers should NEVER be used. It is one of the most destructive things you can do to a plant. Selective horticultural pruning is done with hand pruners. Think about the job of a surgeon. When a surgeon performs surgery he does so to correct some kind of specific problem. He makes a calculated, straight incision with a very sharp, clean instrument. He does this in just the proper place so as to minimize scarring and infection, and promote proper healing. Pruning a plant should be done with exactly the same thought, care and precision. I won’t bore you with the technicalities of proper pruning, but ask your potential landscape maintenance firm how they handle pruning. If they talk about selective horticultural hand pruning and the need to prune different plants at different times of the year to promote proper growth and encourage beautiful blooms, you are dealing with a quality firm. If they mention hedge trimmers, and tell you they can prune the whole place next week, look elsewhere. Lawn care and tree / shrub fertilizations are also extremely important and a good way to determine who you are dealing with. This service ensures that your plants are receiving the vitamins and nutrients necessary to flourish. When healthy, lawn and plants are far less likely to be infested with diseases or pests which can destroy them rapidly. Quality landscape maintenance companies offer this service, can explain all the benefits, and have state licensed applicators on their staff. These companies will be able to inform you on the contents of such materials, which over the last decade have become extremely safe for the environment, pets and wildlife. There are organic options available too, and quality firms can advise you on such options. FINAL ANALYSIS The last criterion for finding a good landscape company is your own personal comfort level. The relationship with your landscaper should be a long term relationship. Beyond the expertise, you should like the company you work with, and you should immediately feel that their concern for you and your yard goes beyond the bottom line. Even the great landscape companies will make occasional mistakes. It is what the company does to correct those occasional mistakes, and the way in which they make you feel as a client that truly makes the greatest difference. • 24. Arts You are a parent. You have before you a plethora of options for which your children can spend their time. There’s soccer, baseball, wrestling, football, gymnastics, dance, cheerleading, music lessons, ballet, horseback riding lessons, and the list goes on and on and on. We all want to give our kids something that will benefit them socially, behaviorally and academically that will be fun for them, and if there is physical or educational benefit, that’s all the better! There is self-esteem in being able to do an activity, and there is much to learn from the many and varied activities in which children can participate. Kids want to try everything, but there is a price. It’s not just the monetary cost, but the time cost as well. There’s also discipline and commitment. Families are sitting down to dinner less now than ever before because they are running kids to varying activities. Weekends are taken up with sports and activities and more sports and activities. I hear parents joking endlessly about how the portable chairs went into the car and will be there for years on end. So how do you choose and help your children to choose an activity that provides long- lasting benefits? Consider a musical instrument. Is there an investment? Certainly. There is the cost of the instrument and the cost of accessories as well as the maintenance of that instrument. However, in most cases, you can rent an instrument before you buy to give your child a chance to experience it with a minimal investment on your part. There are many studies that exhort the benefits of a musical education, both in school and in a private lesson setting. Besides giving a child a sense of identity, building self-esteem, self-discipline, and creativity; involvement with a musical instrument has considerable benefits for the brain. Here are some research findings: KIDS’ MAKING MUSIC ARE MUSIC STUDENTS SMARTER? By: Terri Sunderland Lentine’s Music, Inc. 24 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE
  • 25. 25 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE …And that’s not all. A groundbreaking study published in the February 2005 issue of the international research journal Medical Science Monitor shows for the first time that playing a musical instrument can reverse multiple components of the human stress response on the genomic level. In fact, the Yamaha Corporation has allowed dealers to host the program that was used in this study. It’s called Clavinova Connection – an adult program that incorporates recreational music-making and wellness. Given that the medical community has assessed that nearly 90% of non-catastrophic illness is caused by stress, activities that reduce stress in the human body might mean that it’s time for us to pick up a musical instrument and play along with our kids! Did You Know? Middle school and high school students who participated in instrumental music scored significantly higher than their non-band peers in standardized tests. University studies conducted in Georgia and Texas found significant correlations between the number of years of instrumental music instruction and academic achievement in math, science and language arts. Source: University of Sarasota Study, Jeffrey Lynn Kluball; East Texas State University Study, Daryl Erick Trent Music majors are the most likely group of college grads to be admitted to medical school. Physician and biologist Lewis Thomas studied the undergraduate majors of medical school applicants. He found that 66 percent of music majors who applied to med school were admitted, the highest percentage of any group. For comparison, (44 percent) of biochemistry majors were admitted. Also, a study of 7,500 university students revealed that music majors scored the highest reading scores among all majors including English, biology, chemistry and math. Wood, ERIC Document No. ED327480 “The Case for Music in the Schools,” Phi Delta Kappan, February, 1994 A McGill University study found that pattern recognition and mental representation scores improved significantly for students given piano instruction over a three-year period. They also found that self-esteem and musical skills measures improved for the students given piano instruction. Source: Dr. Eugenia Costa- Giomi, “The McGill Piano Project: Effects of three years of piano instruction on children’s cognitive abilities, academic achievement, and self-esteem,” presented at the meeting of the Music Educators National Conference, Phoenix, AZ, April, 1998 Research shows that piano students are better equipped to comprehend mathematical and scientific concepts. A group of preschoolers received private piano keyboard lessons and singing lessons. A second group received private computer lessons. Those children who received piano/keyboard training performed 34 percent higher on tests measuring spatial-temporal ability than the others ‹ even those who received computer training. “Spatial-temporal” is basically proportional reasoning - ratios, fractions, proportions and thinking in space and time. This concept has long been considered a major obstacle in the teaching of elementary math and science. Source: Neurological Research February 28, 1997 High school music students score higher on SATs in both verbal and math than their peers. In 2001, SAT takers with coursework/experience in music performance scored 57 points higher on the verbal portion of the test and 41 points higher on the math portion than students with no coursework/experience in the arts. Source: Profile of SAT and Achievement Test Takers, The College Board, compiled by Music Educators National Conference, 2001. College-age musicians are emotionally healthier than their non-musician counterparts. A study conducted at the University of Texas looked at 362 students who were in their first semester of college. They were given three tests, measuring performance anxiety, emotional concerns and alcohol related problems. In addition to having fewer battles with the bottle, researchers also noted that the college-aged music students seemed to have surer footing when facing tests. Source: Houston Chronicle, January 11, 1998 A ten-year study, tracking more than 25,000 students, shows that music-making improves test scores. Regardless of socioeconomic background, music-making students get higher marks in standardized tests than those who had no music involvement. The test scores studied were not only standardized tests, such as the SAT, but also in reading proficiency exams. Source: Dr. James Catterall, UCLA, 1997 Music training helps under-achievers. In Rhode Island, researchers studied eight public school first grade classes. Half of the classes became “test arts” groups, receiving ongoing music and visual arts training. In kindergarten, this group had lagged behind in scholastic performance. After seven months, the students were given a standardized test. The “test arts” group had caught up to their fellow students in reading and surpassed their classmates in math by 22 percent. In the second year of the project, the arts students widened this margin even further. Students were also evaluated on attitude and behavior. Classroom teachers noted improvement in these areas also. • 26. 26 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE Around the World in 80 Days Actually you can visit many parts of it in less days than you think. Getaways are as few as 3 nights and world cruises in as many as almost in what the song implied. Cruising is simple – you unpack once and that’s it… and after that, an adventure for as many days you planned on being on your ship of choice. It’s kinda like having a built in maid, or butler (and yes, some ships do offer them for your convenience); your meals are prepared, your cabin is cleaned every day, fresh towels supplied and don’t let me forget the mints on your pillow. Who can ask for anything more??? Well, you guessed it, there is more…amazing entertainment every evening, a fitness center to work off that extra dessert, a spa for the Swedish massage you’ve always wanted, lounge chairs while drying off from a dip in the pool, and room service when you just need a little something before dinner to enjoy on the balcony – that class of service which makes you feel very special. Perhaps your cruise can only take you to Nassau because of your busy schedule and, you can’t be gone for more than a few days, or during a longer cruise, to St. John, where the island is simply breathtaking…if aloha is on your lips, you can cruise for as few as seven days or as many as 15…the choice is yours. The glaciers along the Inside Passage are a sight to behold and when they begin to breakaway, you hear the calving, and a berg forms in the water on which you are cruising…perhaps you see a bald eagle, or an otter and the naturalist on board will help you discover these rare sightings. While in Alaska, you may want to extend your journey with a land package visiting parts that a ship cannot take you, but train or motor coach will, and, where your ship’s cabin is traded for a hotel room. Want to experience an international flair? Why not try China, Barcelona, the Greek Isles, Switzerland, Russia and the list goes on and on. Europe has been extremely popular the last few years and promises to continue to be. Shore excursions are plentiful in each port. You can book them on-line prior to boarding, or you can purchase them in person when you are on the ship. It is suggested to always plan a tour offered by the cruise line since it’s the safest way to explore. And the staff knows exactly where you are, and will be waiting for your return. • 27. 27 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE Travel When departing the vessel, you sign out by simply swiping the ship’s card that has your name on it; this card is received when you first board - a photo is taken for the ship’s computer – so the name, photo and you all match when you leave as well as when you return after a delightful day ashore. No one can join a cruise mid-way and everyone must be registered as a passenger. That card also works as your door key and is how you purchase items or services on the ship. Since 9-11, security has been very tight. Pre-registration online is required prior to boarding so everything is up to date when you arrive. A cruise ship is comparable to a secure building with a 24-hour security guard. It is a controlled environment with limited access. In addition, highly trained security personnel are employed on every vessel. Passports will soon be the norm for anyone arriving into the United States as of December 30, 2006. This new form of identification for everyone will be the best means of recognition no matter what your destination. To obtain a passport you must apply at a designated post office, where a photo id with specific measurements must be presented along with your birth certificate and a check. Previously, the process took about 8 weeks, now since everyone will need this form of identification to travel, it can take up to several months. So, if you are planning to travel toward the end of the year, it would be very beneficial to begin the process now. Singles cruise, couples cruise and so do groups. Cruises can be for a family reunion, a church group or certification for nurses and teachers. Some employers offer them as incentives to their staff. Conference rooms come equipped with all the necessary tools for the meeting or class that is offered. What a great way to hold a conference or training session for those in attendance. Arrangements must be made in advance for space held and equipment needed. In addition, there are cruise lines that have accommodations for passengers with special needs that strive to attend to those having mobility, visual and hearing impairments, so their cruising experience is relaxing and enjoyable. There are big ships and little ships but no matter what the size, the staff is fitting for the number of passengers. Gratuities are usually not included in the price of the package, and are paid for at the end of your voyage. So you really wanted to go to Las Vegas, but the cruise sounded exciting, so you went with it? Don’t worry, there’s a casino right on board… with a myriad of slots and table games. Gaming is only active when the ship is sailing and is not allowed in Hawaii due to the state’s regulations. Elevators get you from deck to deck – you will feel as though you are in a floating hotel – one that is elegant and truly beyond your expectations. You didn’t pack enough??? Don’t fret, many cruise lines offer washing facilities on board that are available to use. If a washer and dryer are not available, for a fee, you can have your laundry done for you, it’s as simple as that! Most ships have set dining times for dinner… and there are others that offer the option of having dinner whenever you want to eat from 5pm to 11pm. Some ships present dining venues where reservations are made and an extra fee is involved for a dining experience fit for royalty. Maybe you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or perhaps on your honeymoon, you may want to try this specialty dining experience. There are daily activities for adults and a kids’ program for the children from ages 3-17 – most times you don’t even know the kids came with you…they are so involved in the program and are making some life-long friendships. Activities are on-going every day – you can do as much or as little as you like. Baby sitting is also available; programs differ with each cruise line. Whatever the mood, there is a cruise out there for you. And, once you’ve been on one, you begin planning for another because there is so much to see and do. You Haven’t Lived Until You’ve Cruised, so, let your dreams unfold…

  • 29. 29 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE Bed Breakfast I love the opportunity of searching out new Bed Breakfasts that are truly unique in what they offer. The Goodwin House Bed Breakfast in the historic village of Burton, Ohio is just such a place. This gorgeous red brick BB allows you to submerse yourself in history while stepping back in time without leaving the luxuries of modern living. The Proprietors Robyn Morris and Tom Spence have created an absolutely charming BB that is the ideal alternative to typical hotel lodging. If you are looking to enjoy a relaxing weekend, be pampered for just one night, or spend a fun-filled week you should check in to the Goodwin House Bed Breakfast. Conveniently situated in walking distance of Burton square which is home to historical Century Village and Museum and many unique shops and antique stores. It makes an excellent jumping off point for those who want to attend one of the many local festivals and fairs including the Apple Butter Festival, Maple Syrup Festival, Great Geauga County Fair, Pancake Breakfasts, Antique and Classic Car Shows, and Holiday events. What makes this BB truly unique is the history and heritage of the Goodwin House. As you walk through the dining room and parlor, you are struck by the sense of history. Originally built in 1828 for Dr. Erastus Goodwin, a prominent physician serving the region, this Greek Revival landmark house is listed on the Na- tional Register of Historic Places. It retains many of its original features, including wood floors and trim. The house is constructed of impressive hand-hewn timbers and beams noteworthy for the fine mortise and tenon joinery. The basic framework of the house uses no nails or screws, only pegs. Where nails do appear in floors or trim, they are 100-180 year old square nails. The cherry staircase and banister are original, as are the American Chestnut floors, which are now rare. The furniture throughout the home spans hundreds of years of history and includes exquisite mahogany, cherry, walnut, and tiger maple pieces. It is a real treat for those who love antiques. The intimate and comfortable Goodwin House Bed and Breakfast is the ideal “home away from home.” This BB features two spacious guest rooms. If available, we recommend you ask for the Cherry Room simply for the lace-canopy in the Queen size four-poster bed. It is fitted with top of the line pillow-top mattress that is like sleeping on a cloud! Accommodations in this spacious 2-guestroom BB include all new en-suite bathrooms, 4-season fire- places, wireless Internet, flat panel television w/DVD player, and clock radio w/CD. The entire house even has wireless Internet access. The mark of a great BB is the Breakfast. It is often what really distinguishes a really great BB. The Goodwin House rises to the challenge by offering a full breakfast that can be tailored to your dietary needs or preferences. (i.e. low carb, vegetarian, etc.) However, if you are able, enjoy the French Toast which is their breakfast specialty. It is served with world famous Geauga County Maple Syrup (YUMMM!). They also offer local treats such as Apple Butter and fresh fruit. It is the unexpected hospitality that gives this BB it character and charm. In the evening, guests are rewarded with a signature evening treat – “Tom’s Crème Brulee.” If you are looking for a truly unique BB, the Goodwin House offers warm country hospitality with all the grace and charm of a bygone era with all the comforts of today! • 30. 30 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE Bed Breakfast I have had the privilege of being able to travel the world in search of that perfect BB that has a perfect blend of history, luxurious decor, hospitality and overall romantic mystique. It was a real treat to come across one of the top 15 Bed and Breakfasts in North America situated minutes away in historic Painesville, Ohio. Fitzgerald’s Irish Bed and Breakfast is a fabulous find nestled on beautifully landscaped grounds. It is a real treasure where the owners Tom and Debra Fitzgerald have mastered the skill of running the perfect bed and breakfast. They are the consummate hosts. Throughout the graciously appointed rooms are plaques and signs with the phrase Cead Mile Failte . Here it is more than just a quaint Irish saying meaning, “A hundred thousand welcomes.” It is truly an attitude that surrounds all aspects of how the Fitzgerald’s run their BB. The history of how Debra and Tom Fitzgerald came to run a BB makes one believe in the “luck of the Irish.” They had already experienced some of the finest Irish BBs through their numerous trips to the Irish countryside. But when the 16 room Tudor built in 1937 came up for sale, they had no intention of turning it into a BB. It became a labor of love renovating the home for themselves. As they began to restore it to its original grandeur, it was clear they had something very special. Architecturally, the restored home is a landmark of craftsmanship. The magnificence of the castle-like home created a buzz amongst those who saw it being restored and the interest was overwhelming. The Fitzgerald’s knew that they had to share this home, and their memories of the Irish BBs gave them the direction. When finally renovated, the results were nothing less than magnificent. Those who enjoy tours of distinctive homes will be charmed by the final results. From the unusual turret to its elaborate eleven-foot fireplace, each room has unique architectural appeal. The charm however, is in the details. The hardwood floor and design details are what make the home so interesting. The guests of Fitzgerald’s Irish BB have recognized this as well by paying them the highest compliment. In 2004, Inn-goers voted them the “Best Interior Design and Decor” for all BBs throughout North America. However what is really important in a BB are the “beds” and the “breakfast.” At Fitzgerald’s Irish Bed and Breakfast, the “beds” or guest rooms are simply elegant. There are four guest rooms each of them with its Cead Mile Failte By: Alyssa Anderson, Travel Editor A Hundred Thousand Welcomes Fitzgerald’s BB
  • 31. 31 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE own private bath. Each room has generous upscale amenities that pamper and please. We recommend if available that you ask for the Galway Room. It is the most popular of all the guest rooms possibly due to luxurious attention to details. The Galway Room has a beautiful cherry Queen size sleigh bed and the room is decorated in greens, cream and burgundy. Located on the first floor, it has a glamour bathroom with a large corner Jacuzzi. The Fitzgerald’s understand the importance of details; from the luxurious robes to the Irish crystal lamps they have not overlooked anything. Unlike a lot of BBs, they are not afraid of allowing technology into their guest rooms. The Galway room has a high Definition LCD flat-screen TV with Satellite reception, high speed wireless Internet, DVD player and a microwave oven. The “breakfast” part of the BB is also worth noting. Guests can begin their morning with the BB’s signature coffee, a special “Top O The Morning” blend of Daybreak coffee. This fresh-roasted coffee is so good that many guests arrange to have it shipped to their home. During the week, guests can partake from an enhanced continental breakfast of cereal, fruit cup and homemade scones that is available starting at 7:00am. However, weekend guests are subject to a real treat. Tom Fitzgerald is a gourmet cook whose recipes have been showcased on PBS. Such dishes may include Apple or Strawberry Stuffed French Toast or Scrambled Eggs with Roasted Pepper Cream Sauce served in a Puff Pastry. Breakfast on the weekend is served at 9:00am. The real surprise is how much the surrounding community has to offer visitors to the BB. Of course Cleveland and all of its cultural, theatrical and sporting events are just 30 minutes away. Just minutes away however are some of the most visited trails and beaches in the Great Lakes region. There are 20 of the finest wineries in the mid-west just a short driving distance away. The proprietors often offer special packages for their guests who wish to take advantage of special events taking place in the community. Vintage Ohio (wine tasting) at Lake Farmpark or the Irish Summer Festival are two such packages. However the most popular packages are those that take advantage of the romantic atmosphere of the bed and breakfast. Those looking for a romantic anniversary or honeymooners have found the Bed and Breakfast an ideal getaway. Relaxation and romantic packages include: bottle of champagne, hand dipped chocolates, fresh flowers, massages by a Licensed Massage Therapist, cheese and cracker baskets or dinner certificates at an area restaurant. Those who are interested in golfing can obtain a package that includes golf at one of the region’s most revered courses that ranks among the top of Ohio golf resorts. While the Fitzgerald’s have had guests from as far away as Australia, the majority of their guests are either local or those that come back year after year. Tom and Debra Fitzgerald seem to genuinely enjoy the friends that they have made and who have shared their home. They have been able to master the balance between being very friendly and attentive but provide the much sought after privacy and seclusion one may seek in a Bed and Breakfast. Their secret is best summed up by their guests who also voted the Fitzgerald’s Irish Bed and Breakfast as the best in the nation for “affordable luxury.” Those looking for a romantic anniversary or honeymooners have found the Bed and Breakfast an ideal getaway.
  • 32. 32 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE Tea Timeat Rosepointe Cottage W hen you think of Chardon, do you immediately think of snow country and The Maple Festival? Well there’s a lot more than that! Chardon is a destination town. It has a quaint square filled with antique stores and unique specialty shops, and just off the square, sits Rosepointe Cottage Tea Room, a very special tea house that perhaps even some locals don’t know is there. The fact is, Rosepointe Cottage has been delighting guests since the beginning of this century (okay since May 2000) and is located in a very non-assuming Century home. The unassuming nature of the home makes the grace and elegance found inside even more of a treasure. Once you enter you are transformed into a different era - a return to the civility of days gone by. Mariann Goodwin has managed to recreate the quiet elegance and refinement of a grand English Tea parlor. Her passion for sharing her afternoon tea came from helping a friend who spent years teaching schools, community and church groups the history and etiquette of high tea. The ambience of the circa 1839 home is a key ingredient in the illusion that you have stepped back to a more gentile time. Simply said, the home is charming. Great care was taken in recreating the perfect setting. The Parlor is bright with cheerfully appointed décor. The home has large windows trimmed with beautiful hand carved rosettes that give warmth and a sense that you are sitting in the fine parlor of a good friend having afternoon tea. The hospitality is one of the most important aspects of any great tearoom. Mariann and her staff have captured the warmth and friendliness of being a great hostess. The secret is her attention to detail in selecting and training her staff in the fine art of high tea. The server we have had on each occasion is cut from the same cloth as someone who has just stepped out of 18th century Victorian times. Her mannerisms and politeness make this a truly memorable event. Afternoon tea ($15.95) is available anytime at Rosepointe Cottage. It consists of three courses: An array of dainty finger sandwiches and savories, freshly baked totally delectable scones with clotted cream and jam and an assortment of tea fancies that will delight your palette and of course your choice of freshly brewed tea. Something we consider to be notable is that, unlike some tea houses, the Afternoon Tea does not require advance notice. A Teatime Blessing Lord, grant me that our time together be steeped in serenity, sweetened by sharing and surrounded by the warm fragrance of Your love. — Amen By: Toni Gard
  • 33. A smaller version of the Afternoon Tea called the “Cream Tea” is available for $8.95. It features fresh fruit, a scone with Devonshire cream and jam and your choice of tea. Rosepointe Cottage also offers a wide array of soups, salads and sandwiches to satisfy anyone’s taste or fancy. Some of the most popular selections are pumpkin based corn chowder. Their chicken salad and chicken potpie are equally popular. We recommend that you also look beyond your old favorites and explore some of the unique selections that are available. The menu is changed twice a year and specials are often available. All of the delicacies are made fresh by the staff. One of the more unique aspects of Rosepointe Cottage is the exquisite gifts that may be found in their upstairs gift shop. While many teahouses set aside a small section for you to find a remembrance, Marianne has three wonderful rooms filled with a selection of truly fine gifts for the discriminating gift giver. Take the time to browse through the rooms, as this is truly part of the teahouse experience. You may also find that special gift that will help you celebrate the significant events and people in your life. Rosepointe Cottage is the perfect place to spend an afternoon enjoying the comfort and camaraderie of friends and family. However, four times each year, they also have Dinner Parties in which they serve a High Tea with somewhat heartier meals. If you are planning a dinner party or a shower, they will open during the evening for parties of 20 or more people. Although settings are limited to 36 people, they are able to accommodate larger church and community tour groups by having multiple sittings while one group is visiting the shops and antique houses on Chardon square. Rosepointe Cottage Tea Room is a place of tranquility where you can enjoy a spot of tea and a good meal with while making memories with those you care most about. Tea High Tea Cream Tea
  • 34. 34 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE H istoric downtown Willoughby, Ohio has been reborn; it is now a trendy shopping district with fabulous restaurants and cute boutiques. Since 2002, an important part of this rebirth has been Lady Charlton’s Tea Parlour. Lady Charlton’s is steeped in atmosphere and social opportunity. It is ideally situated for a quick lunch or to leisurely slow things down a little, to sip and savor life. Somehow, taking tea together encourages an atmosphere of intimacy and civility, a time when ladies wore fashionable hats and manners were a way of life. The Proprietresses, Janet Dell and Carol Clark, have created such a retreat. In fact, they have put together the most authentic Victorian tea parlour we have found. They are truly passionate about tea. This passion started well before they opened their tea parlour. They spent years of research and preparation before they opened the doors. They attended the Magnolia and Ivy Tea School to hone their knowledge, and they continue to be students of their trade by attending yearly tea conferences Don’t be fooled by the exterior storefront façade. Upon entering you are transported back to a more elegant time – to a true Victorian Tea Parlour. When you enter you first pass through a thoroughly charming gift shop which you will want to spend some time in before you leave. A flowered trellis separates the gift shop from the tea parlour. The room is graciously appointed with dolls, lace and it even had a cozy fireplace setting with a table for two in front of it. Janet and Carol managed to find the balance between having an elegant parlour without being too feminine for husbands and boyfriends. If available, we recommend that you sit by the fireplace, it really adds to the experience. Their attention to detail is striking. You will notice that on the linen covered tables; there are mixed sets of lovely English bone china teacups. They only use fine bone china from England, as they believe it best recreates the Victorian experience and presents the best cup of tea. Knowing that their guests will peek anyway, they rest their cups upside down on the saucer so they can easily read the heritage of each cup. • 35. 35 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE We were delighted at finding a pretty assortment of colored sugar cubes shaped as flowers in the sugar bowl. Their selection of background music added a peaceful tranquility to the room. The menu is quite varied for a teahouse. They have an interesting assortment of salads, sandwiches, quiches and desserts. The portions and variety of the menu explains why they have a healthy take out trade. One of their most popular selections is a chicken puff pastry, which is a baked boneless breast of chicken infused with fresh cream, broccoli, sweet red peppers, garlic and cheese. However, the true test of any Tea Parlour is their Afternoon Tea. Here Lady Charlton’s is at its best. You are presented with a pot of your favorite blend of tea, a cup of soup, their famous scones with lemon and Devonshire cream, an assortment of finger sandwiches and savories, delectable desserts, tea breads and fresh seasonal fruit for only $20 per person. Due to the elaborate nature, 48-hour advance reservations are requested. Their attention to detail of course extends to the tea. They have over 42 different varieties that they procure from a master tea broker. We would strongly recommend that on at least one occasion, you try their signature tea, “Lady Charlton’s Blend.” This exclusive blend has a hint of coconut and delicate flowers. It is unique and delicious and truly one of our favorite teas. What I simply loved about Lady Charlton’s is that every aspect of the tea experience can be recreated at home. If you simply loved the music or that particular bone china cup and saucer, you may purchase it (even right off the table). Their lovely gift shop has all the accoutrements you could want for yourself or for that special someone to cherish. They have all their loose tea, a unique assortment of foods, English bone china teacups, saucers, teapots, jewelry, books and magazines. They have a special niche set aside that is dedicated to Red Hat Ladies who often frequent Lady Charlton’s for their monthly meetings. One of the best times to visit Lady Charlton’s may be during one of the many events that Historic Downtown Willoughby hosts each year. The Willoughby Arts Festival in July and the Holiday Stroll in December are two of the most popular occasions to spend some leisurely time taking tea. Lady Charlton’s also has their own special events periodically, which offer a fun twist to the overall experience. Each quarter they have a character show connecting people to the past by having a woman present her Victorian Life while dressed in period clothing. Lady Charlton’s Tea Parlour is also perfect for a bridal shower, private party or corporate event, as the room is quite spacious, seating about fifty. Lady Charlton’s Tea Parlour provides a forgotten realm of luxury and old world ambiance which allows you to leisurely gather with family, friends or business associates, in a manner that creates memories and traditions. Yes, I envied all those kids who got to watch their favorite TV show while they ate. It didn’t matter that in those days the food in the TV dinners was cardboard. They got to watch TV! I had to hear about how great the program was the next day. We didn’t have VCR or DVR in those days, so if you missed that program, it was gone forever. I had to sit at a real table with my entire family and eat real food with vegetables. We were all required to tell the family what happened during our day…. Yes actually talk to them. Boy I miss those days! You would think that with this rich Italian heritage of family and food that I would have learned something about the magic and congeniality of breaking bread and sharing a meal with those you care most about. Imagine my horror when I realized that most of our family meals were being “enjoyed” separately mostly while watching TV. Everyone would heat up his own meal in the microwave at different times and retreat to his own corner of the house. Sure we ate together at times, but the after school activities, the long work hours slowly and silently gave way to the convenience of fast food eaten in the car or frozen dinners. I found that I was not alone. The Norman Rockwell picture of a family sitting around the dinner table most of us remember growing up is no longer the norm. According to several surveys, 30 to 40 percent of families do not eat dinner together five to seven nights a week. I wish I could say as an enlightened parent that I realized this on my own, but it took a number of studies to show me that what I was told growing up was right (Don’t you hate when that happens?). The fact is that the demise of the traditional dinner was undermining the family. A study published by The Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine in 2004 found that frequent family meals were associated with a lower risk of smoking, drinking and using marijuana; with a lower incidence of depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts; and with better grades. Columbia News, CASA 2000 Teen Survey reported the increased risk was 61% higher. Another study last year, by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, found that teenagers (12- to 17-year-old) who reported eating two or fewer dinners a week with family members were more than one and a half times as likely to smoke, drink or use illegal substances than were teenagers who had five to seven family dinners. The family dinner hour also provides nutritional benefits for busy families. For parents who worry that their kids are not eating right, regular meal times offer a chance to prepare a variety of healthy dishes. So with all these clear benefits what is stopping us from doing what is clearly best for our kids? TIME! The next two articles will explore some ideas and practical ways that every family can adopt to make family meal times a regular activity. Tips from the National Center on Abuse and Addiction’s Family Day website: www.casafamilyday.org n Start the pattern of family dinners when children are young. n Encourage your children to create menu ideas and participate in meal preparation. n Turn off the TV and let your answering machine answer calls during dinnertime. n Talk about what happened in everyone’s day: school, work, extracurricular activities or current events. n Ask about their biggest challenge. n Share a childhood memory. n Establish a routine to start and end each meal. n Light candles, say grace or tell a story. n After dinner play a board game or serve dessert to encourage the family to continue the conversation. n Keep conversation positive and make sure everyone gets a chance to speak.
  • 38. 38 CLEVELAND WOMAN MAGAZINE Food We’ve all heard it. It is enough to make you feel guilty as to why you can’t spend 30 minutes of your time for the most important people of your life? If only it were true! You soon realize that 30 minutes does not account for the real time required to prepare and plan the meal. First you need to determine what you want to make, prepare a grocery list, shop for the ingredients, return to the store a second time to pick up the forgotten ingredients (or send your husband, like I do.), chop and saute and finally cleaning up after preparing the meal. If you are anything like me, it’s not the time to actually prepare the meal but all the related tasks that come before or after. The research is clear, “the family that eats together thrives together.” The only question is how to accomplish this without the benefit of a stay at home mom. I decided to approach the problem in the same way that I would for any dilemma I come across in business. Establish a goal and set parameters for the solution. While I was looking for something truly quick and easy, I decided that ordering pizza or getting carryout from Applebee’s or Friday’s was a copout. That’s fine once in awhile, but I wanted my kids to grow up and tell their children, “When I was a kid, we had home cooked meals.” It had to be nutritious. Most of all it had to be affordable. I’m not ready to hire a private chef. My first attempt was to call Mom and see if she could be hired out. That, however, would create its own set of problems. My second attempt was to prepare all the meals in advance. It was certainly nutritious, affordable and something I could be proud of, but it actually took more time than I had to spend. By the time I went through all the related preparation steps, (planning, shopping, preparing, shopping again and cleaning) I really wasn’t saving any time.
