by the GOI in its preparation for post 2012 UNFCCC. As a National Demonstration Activity
it involves development and testing of the full range of activities needed to establish readiness in the
Carbon Credit supply chain. Based in Palangka Raya in Central Kalimantan it has involved
negotiations with Province and Local Government leaders and civil service in developing
frameworks for management and linkage, including strategies and activities for local community,
local government and provincial capacity building and engagement for fund based incentives for reduced
emissions. It has also required work planning, team building and recruitment and day to day
supervision and quality control. The Project is informed by the Central Kalimantan Peatlands Master
Plan and forms part of the ex Mega Rice Conversion undertaken by the GOI between1995 and 1997.

This project was initiated through the informal leader of the Melanesian communities along the northern
coastline of New Georgia Island as a way of developing reforestation of logged lowland rainforest as a
step towards a sustainable land use involving commercial plantation forests, and agriculture. The project
was initially funded by the community and church groups for a total of approximately USD 100 000 to
establish a concept and to implement the construction of what was to be the first commercial
community nursery in the country. The project subsequently received national government support and
negotiations for a more comprehensive funding model through the World Bank were in an advanced
stage at the time of the coup in mid-2000. This event effectively halted the project, although it was
eventually picked up in a different form several years later with assistance from the MacArthur
Foundation.
