Good governance of ocean is needed to promote sustainable ocean management by balancing economic development and environmental protection. An integrated sea use management with marine spatial planning is one approach that may lead to promoting sustainable development of ocean and coastal zone.
Sustainable marine and fisheries development policy frameworks: 1) implementing good ocean governance: integrated sea use management and ecosystem-based management, 2) developing blue economy zone: integrated land and ocean-based development such as ICZM, and 3) blue economy model investment.

Wetlands International had several successes in 2010-2011, including influencing targets in the Convention on Biological Diversity to safeguard freshwater ecosystems and protect peatlands. They also completed the Wings Over Wetlands project which developed tools to protect migratory waterbird habitats. Challenges in 2012 include strengthening waterbird monitoring, demonstrating the role of wetlands in water management, and influencing policies to reduce the environmental impact of development projects and improve guidance on wetland carbon storage and restoration. Wetlands International will work on initiatives in several regions involving wetland conservation, restoration, and sustainable livelihoods while continuing organizational development.
Sustainable development Goal 14: Conserve and sustain the oceans, seas and ma...Dima Mykulo
Oceans are essential to life on Earth but are increasingly threatened by human activities. Goal 14 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals is dedicated to conserving oceans and marine resources through various targets aimed at reducing pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction, while increasing scientific understanding and sustainable use. Achieving this goal requires international cooperation, as oceans have no borders, and collaborative efforts between companies and organizations to address issues through practical solutions aligned with their expertise and operations.
The document summarizes a presentation given by Árni M. Mathiesen at the Near East Regional Group Meeting on March 21st 2016. It discusses key trends in global fisheries and aquaculture production including a shift towards aquaculture and production in developing nations. It also outlines some of the main challenges going forward such as sustainable management of fisheries and aquaculture, and supporting small-scale fisheries and decent work.
This document summarizes a presentation given by Árni M. Mathiesen at the Near East Regional Group Meeting on March 21st, 2016. The presentation covered several topics:
- Global fish production has shifted from developed to developing countries, where small-scale fisheries are important. Production has also shifted from capture fisheries to aquaculture, particularly in Asia.
- While the degree of overfishing has stabilized over the past 20 years, it remains unacceptably high.
- The main challenges going forward are developing sustainable aquaculture and improving management of small-scale fisheries while accounting for climate change impacts.
This document summarizes a regional policy briefing on building resilience in small island economies. It discusses the vulnerabilities small island developing states (SIDS) face, including economic dependence and exposure to climate change impacts. SIDS have opportunities in areas like sustainable tourism and fisheries. The briefing aimed to raise awareness of challenges SIDS face, facilitate information exchange on key issues, and promote networking. It included panels on vulnerabilities/economic opportunities, climate change impacts and adaptation, and enhancing sustainable development. The target audience was 100 policymakers and development practitioners focused on addressing challenges in ACP island nations.

The blue economy is an emerging concept that promotes sustainable development of ocean resources. It contributes significantly to India's GDP and employment. Key sectors of India's blue economy include aquaculture, fishing, maritime transport, tourism, and offshore energy. Challenges include environmental sustainability, overfishing, and resource depletion. The government is taking initiatives to support the blue economy through policies, infrastructure development, and international collaboration. Case studies on aquaculture, seaweed cultivation, and coastal tourism demonstrate successful local economic and environmental impacts.
The document summarizes the draft strategy 2015-2025 of the Severn Estuary Partnership. The partnership is an independent organization established in 1995 to promote sustainable management of the Severn Estuary. It hosts numerous projects and works with stakeholders from various sectors. The draft strategy aims to incorporate the goals of relevant governments and partners. It establishes 10 draft principles for a sustainable marine economy, strong society, environmental protection, governance, and use of science. The next stages will involve public consultation on the draft strategy throughout winter and spring 2016, with the finalized strategy coming in 2016.
South-East Asia and Pacific Regional Fisheries Summit Digital BrochureThe Economist Events
The South-East Asia and Pacific Regional Fisheries Summit, part of The Economist Events’ World Ocean Initiative, will bring together government, industry, the financial sector and scientists for a broad discussion on fisheries reform across South-East Asia and the adjacent Pacific. Working groups will be encouraged to report their progress at the World Ocean Summit in Bali in February 2017.
The document discusses climate change impacts observed in Mauritius such as rising temperatures and sea levels. It outlines studies conducted on climate change and key adaptation projects funded by the AAP and AFB to mainstream adaptation. These projects focus on coastal protection, disaster risk reduction, and climate-resilient development. Upcoming projects include a climate change observatory and strengthened efforts in coastal management, agriculture, and climate negotiation.
The fourth World Ocean Summit will be held in Bali, Indonesia, on February 22nd-24th 2017 and will bring a critical eye to the vital issue of how to finance a sustainable ocean economy. Our aim is ambitious: to mobilise a new discussion on how capital and the private sector can drive scalable, sustainable investment in the ocean.
In our fourth World Ocean Summit, we bring a critical eye to the important issue of how the blue economy is to be financed.
How large is the opportunity?
What are the risks involved?
What is sustainable investment in the ocean?
What kind of investment frameworks might be necessary?
What capital is available, and how can it be scaled up?

The National Environment Policy (NEP) aims to establish an umbrella framework for environmental protection and conservation in Vanuatu. The NEP will facilitate implementation of the Fisheries Policy by making environmental priorities and fisheries a national agenda. Key aspects of the Fisheries Policy that relate to the environment, such as enforcement of regulations to protect coastal habitats, will be addressed. The NEP will also foster cooperation across sectors such as agriculture and forestry to establish sustainable land management practices that prevent pollution impacting fisheries. By improving coordination between agencies such as the Department of Environmental Protection and Conservation, the NEP can support more efficient environmental projects and resource management.
SDG 14: Life Below Water aims to sustainably manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems from pollution, as well as address the impacts of ocean acidification.
Enhancing conservation and the sustainable use of ocean-based resources through international law will also help mitigate some of the challenges facing our oceans.
This document discusses Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and provides information about them. It defines SIDS as distinct developing countries facing specific vulnerabilities. There are 52 countries and territories classified as SIDS by the UN, with 38 being UN members. SIDS are spread across the Caribbean, Pacific, and Atlantic/Indian/Mediterranean/South China Sea regions. They face challenges such as small economies, remoteness, and vulnerability to climate change impacts. The document outlines actions to address climate change, biodiversity, coastal and marine resources, and other issues facing SIDS based on the Barbados Programme of Action and Mauritius Strategy which guide international support for SIDS sustainable development efforts.
