CUSTOM METAL FABRICATION
When you need a metal bin, silo or tank manufactured to
exact specifications, you can’t source a prefabricated
product. What you need is custom metal fabrication.

THE BIN, SILO & TANK
FABRICATION PROCESS
Creating custom-fabricated bins, silos and tanks follows a
straightforward, six-step process.

First, a new project is given a classification:
• ASME Sec. IX
• Atmospheric
• Certified
• Code
• Non-Code
STEP ONE

STEP TWO
Approval drawings are then processed through the
fabricator’s engineering department and presented for
customer review.

STEP THREE
Once drawings are approved, the production schedule is
confirmed.

Production proceeds with
plate-forming, fit-up, and
certified weld-out to
customer requirements.
STEP FOUR

STEP FIVE
Following production, the finishing process is completed
and in-house QC inspectors ensure quality production and
specification compliance.

Final customer or third-party
inspections check quality
and then the product is
prepared for shipping.
STEP SIX

MATERIALS
Custom fabricated bulk storage bins, silos and tanks can
be processed from three types of metal:
• Aluminum
• Carbon Steel
• Stainless Steel

ALUMINUM BINS, SILOS & TANKS
Aluminum is an ideal metal for bulk storage bins, silos and
tanks that contain the following materials.
• Liquid storage
• Plastic pellet storage
It can also be used as an exterior insulation for carbon-
steel products.

Carbon steel tanks are generally
used for most bulk storage
applications, including:
• Aggregate
• Grain
• Miscellaneous liquids
• Oxide

Stainless steel bins, silos
and tanks are generally
used to store:
• Bulk oil
• Fertilizer
• Liquid acid
• Water

EXAMPLES OF CUSTOM BULK
STORAGE BINS, SILOS & TANKS
Since every custom fabricated bin, silo and tank is custom,
no two products are exactly alike. We show examples,
though, to help illustrate the possibilities.

This oil storage tank made
out of carbon steel needed
to be clad with 2”-thick
aluminum for insulation.
ALUMINUM-CLAD TANK

We jokingly refer to this 14’-
diameter, 86’-tall fully self-
contained carbon steel lime
storage silo as “The Big Bad
Boy Project.” It’s recognized
as one of SMF’s largest
units.
CARBON STEEL STORAGE SILO

This stainless steel storage
silo needed eight structural
steel legs to elevate it in
order to meet unloading
requirements.
STAINLESS STEEL STORAGE SILO

This bulk oil storage tank
shipped with four structural
steel legs, as well as
integrated industrial access
equipment, including OSHA-
compliant ladders and
railings.
CARBON STEEL STORAGE TANK

This carbon steel storage
bin was designed with a
reinforced cone bottom. It
required a heavy coat of
paint — both inside and out
— to endure wear and
weather.
