11. Professional Experience :
A. Teaching (post-graduate): 38 years
(i) In India: 35 years
(ii) Abroad: 3 years
B. Research : 42 years
(i) In India :
I have been working on marine micropaleontology and environment for
the last 42 years and published my first research paper on the subject in 1964.
My research work on Recent foraminifera and marine
environment from Indian coasts demonstrated for the first time that the
foraminifera from the East and West coasts of India belong to different faunal
realms and the "mixed zone" extending from the Bay of Bengal to the Great
Australian Bight developed due to mixing of East-African and Indo-Pacific
elements aided by ocean currents.
The Government of India appointed me Director of
major research project on the Recent foraminifera and marine environment of the
West coast of India. Under this project, a large number of samples were collected
along the West coast of India from Bombay to Kanniyakumari. The analysis
shows that all along the West coast, mostly normal marine conditions prevail
except at a few places where toxic substances discharged by the industries have
polluted the environment. The suggested remedial measures include the treatment
of affluents before discharging them into the sea and even these should be piped
to nearby off-shore zone where long-shore currents prevail. Further studies are in
progress in order to develop a cost-effective environmental monitoring
programme for the West coast of India and similar studies have been taken up for
the East coast of India also.
My other significant research contributions include
the first comprehensive study of foraminifera, paleoecology, age, paleogeography,
inter-regional correlation, cycles of marine transgressions and regressions of the
East Coast Gondwana (Lower Cretaceous); Infra- and Inter-trappean beds (Early
Eocene) of Andhra Pradesh and Baripada beds (Middle Miocene) on the East
coast of India and the Jurassic rocks of Kutch on the West coast of the country. I
was the first to predict the possibility of finding oil and gas in on-shore as
well as off-shore areas of Andhra Pradesh, eastern India, as far back as 1970
(see List of Publ., ser. no. 17) which has been confirmed by the Oil and
Natural Gas Commission, Government of India, during their drilling
operations in this region in 1982.
3
(ii) Abroad :
In the U.K., I made a detailed taxonomic study of Recent as well as
Jurassic foraminifera at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. In
addition, I studied type slides of Recent foraminifera of Brady's Challenger report,
deposited at the British Museum (Natural History), London, in order to gain the
taxonomic uniformity of Recent foraminifera from India. I visited the U.K. in
1994 under the auspices of The Royal Society, London. There, I discussed
problems of mutual interest on foraminiferal taxonomy and ecology with
colleagues at the University of Southampton; University College of Wales,
Aberystwyth; University College, London; and Natural History Museum, London.
In Germany, I made a comprehensive study of the Recent foraminifera
and environment of the Arabian Sea at Bundesanstalt fur Bodenforschung,
Hanover; Miocene foraminifera at Institut fur Palaontologie und historische
Geologie der Universitat, Munich; and Recent and Jurassic foraminifera at Institut
fur Geologie und Palaontologie, Tubingen University.
In Switzerland, I worked on the Jurassic foraminifera at the Museum
d'Histoire naturelle, Geneva. I made a detailed study of the taxonomy and
intraspecific variation of Jurassic foraminifera and studied Jurassic sections of
Swiss Alps.
In Kuwait, I studied the Recent foraminifera of the Kuwaiti waters,
especially those from lagoons and creeks, and carried out a comprehensive study
of the taxonomy, ecology and distribution of foraminifera from stress marine
environment of Kuwait.
In Japan, I worked on the Recent foraminifera of the Sea of Japan and
also on foramgeographical provinces of the Indo-Pacific region in collaboration
with Japanese scientists.
(iii) Publications :
I have published over 100 research papers in different journals of repute
(see List of Publications) which have been widely cited in various books and
journals of scientific interest (see Citation List and Citation Index).

  • 6. (i) In India : I have been working on marine micropaleontology and environment for the last 42 years and published my first research paper on the subject in 1964. My research work on Recent foraminifera and marine environment from Indian coasts demonstrated for the first time that the foraminifera from the East and West coasts of India belong to different faunal realms and the "mixed zone" extending from the Bay of Bengal to the Great Australian Bight developed due to mixing of East-African and Indo-Pacific elements aided by ocean currents. The Government of India appointed me Director of major research project on the Recent foraminifera and marine environment of the West coast of India. Under this project, a large number of samples were collected along the West coast of India from Bombay to Kanniyakumari. The analysis shows that all along the West coast, mostly normal marine conditions prevail except at a few places where toxic substances discharged by the industries have polluted the environment. The suggested remedial measures include the treatment of affluents before discharging them into the sea and even these should be piped to nearby off-shore zone where long-shore currents prevail. Further studies are in progress in order to develop a cost-effective environmental monitoring programme for the West coast of India and similar studies have been taken up for the East coast of India also. My other significant research contributions include the first comprehensive study of foraminifera, paleoecology, age, paleogeography, inter-regional correlation, cycles of marine transgressions and regressions of the East Coast Gondwana (Lower Cretaceous); Infra- and Inter-trappean beds (Early Eocene) of Andhra Pradesh and Baripada beds (Middle Miocene) on the East coast of India and the Jurassic rocks of Kutch on the West coast of the country. I was the first to predict the possibility of finding oil and gas in on-shore as well as off-shore areas of Andhra Pradesh, eastern India, as far back as 1970 (see List of Publ., ser. no. 17) which has been confirmed by the Oil and Natural Gas Commission, Government of India, during their drilling operations in this region in 1982.
