INTRODUCTION TO CSR
As per UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development
Organization)
 Corporate Social Responsibility is a management concept
whereby companies integrate social and environmental
concerns in their business operations and interacts with their
stakeholders.
 CSR is generally understood as being the way through which
a company achieves a balance of economic, environmental
and social imperatives
 According to Corporate Social Responsibility Rules under
Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013 in India the
companies having Net worth of INR 500 crore or more; or
Turnover of INR 1000 crore or more; or Net Profit of INR 5
crore or more during any financial year shall be required to
spent 2% off their profit on CSR activities.
BACKGROUND OF BOSCH
 Robert Bosch GmbH, or Bosch, is a German multinational
engineering and electronics company headquartered in
Gerlingen, near Stuttgart, Germany. It is the world's largest
supplier of automotive components measured by 2011
revenues
 Bosch's core products are automotive components (including
brakes, controls, electrical drives, electronics, fuel systems,
generators, starter motors and steering systems), industrial
products (including drives and controls, packaging technology
and consumer goods) and building products (including
household appliances, power tools, security systems and
thermo technology
BOSCH IN INDIA
 Bosch entered India in 1922, when Illies & Company set
up a sales office in Calcutta. For three decades, the
company operated in the Indian market only through
imports. In 1951, Bosch set up its first manufacturing
plant in India which has grown over the years to include
15 manufacturing sites and seven development and
application centers.
 In India, Bosch is a leading supplier of technology and
services in the areas of Mobility Solutions, Industrial
Technology, Consumer Goods, and Energy and Building
Technology. Additionally, Bosch has in India the largest
development center outside Germany, for end to end
engineering and technology solutions.
 In India, Bosch Limited is the flagship company of the
Bosch Group. It earned revenue of over ₨. 10,415
crores (1.4 billion euros) in 2015-16.
BOSCH - CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
 Over the past 60 years, Bosch in India has created a
space for itself in the society not just as a technology
and innovation pioneer, but also as a company that
‘cares’. BOSCH corporate social responsibility
endeavours, known as ‘Bosch Social Engagement’, aim
to make a difference in the communities.
 Bosch Social Engagement has three pillars:
• Bosch Limited CSR,
• Primavera
• Bosch India Foundation.
 Within Bosch Limited, they have defined three major
thrust areas, under CSR namely:
1. Vocational Training (BRIDGE) – A special program
to make school dropout youth employable through
short-term job-oriented training courses.
2. Health, Hygiene & Education – for underprivileged
children studying in Government Schools around
Bosch locations.
3. Neighbourhood Projects – identified by plant
management in Bosch India plants, as per local
society needs.
BRIDGE
 BRIDGE (Bosch’s Response to India’s Development
and Growth through Employability Enhancement) is a
pioneering Bosch CSR program that helps fulfilling the
growing need for skilled manpower across sectors in
India.
 Bosch reaches out to school dropout youth from
underprivileged backgrounds who are between the ages
of 18 and 25, and not in education, employment or
training.
 This 3-month short-term program has been designed
and developed by Bosch with focus on employability
and life skills and delivered by Bosch through BRIDGE
Centers across India.
 BRIDGE students receive job skills training in all the key
elements needed to find gainful employment in the
organised or semi-organised sector
 The program prepares students to find the first job in
their life and includes industry demand-driven modules:
 Soft skills (for 5 weeks)
 Industry-specific and Job skills (for 2 weeks)
 Social Skills (for 1 week)
 On-the-Job Training (for 4 weeks)
 As of July 2016, more than 4,500 students (school
dropout youth) have been trained and placed. 100% of
BRIDGE students receive job placement offers. Most of
them are first-generation employees to get into the formal
job sector, where the remuneration and working
conditions are far more organised and reasonable.
HEALTH, HYGIENE & EDUCATION
 Issues relating to poor sanitation, lack of clean
water, and poor hygiene and health are closely
interconnected. The Health, Hygiene & Education
program was started to address these problems
among underprivileged children, especially those
studying in government schools.
 This section is further divided into two programs
 Child Health Development Program
 School Education
CHILD HEALTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (CHDP)
 Focus of this program is to determine and improve the health
conditions of children studying in government schools between 6
to 15 years of age. As part of this program, Bosch has adopted
230 government schools, which are located within 30 km radius
of its Bangalore, Bidadi and Kumbalgod Plant facilities. In 2010,
a community survey was carried out by Bosch. Currently, 42000
students are being benefited through this program.
 This program includes
 Medical, Dental & Eye Camps- Bosch conducts free health
diagnostic camps at the government schools it has adopted,
which provide complete health screening of all the children
by a team of general physicians, paediatricians,
ophthalmologists and pedodontic dentists. They provide
proper medicines to that children.

Program for Govt. School Children
 Hygiene awareness- It is an important need in
government schools. Sessions on hygiene are
conducted among school children, which stress the
importance of cleanliness and personal hygiene.
These sessions also cover illnesses caused by
medical ignorance.
 Toilets Construction at Government Schools- Bosch
has identified government schools that lack clean and
separate toilet facilities for boys and girls. Bosch has
not only funded the construction of 50 new toilets at
these schools, but also facilitated water-line and
sewage connections for them to become functional. All
these new toilets receive maintenance oversight from
Bosch for the first 6 months after construction.
SCHOOL EDUCATION
 Most number of government-schools don’t have a
proper labourites and instruments so that the
children are unable to get proper practical
knowledge. Bosch has started different initiative for
such schools and college. Some of them are
• Mobile Science Lab is aimed to raise
awareness among disadvantaged
children and teachers of the value of
learning - with a focus on science.
Each MSL travels to doorstep of
remote schools with 200+ hands-on
science models covering a wide
range of topics in Physics, Chemistry,
Biology and Math for Class 5 through
10.
Mobile Science Lab (MSL)
• Lab in a Box refers to sets of 10 boxes
which are filled with experiments on
Biology, Chemistry, Physics and
Mathematics, covering more than 70
concepts in total for the Lab in a Box
(LIB) Program. A rotation scheme is
followed for the distribution of LIB boxes.

Box" to a visiting senior

• Lab on a Bike is a variation of the LIB program wherein an
instructor uses the LIB to conduct hands-on science classes in
the schools. The instructor travels to different schools each day
along with an LIB which fits onto the side of his bike.
• Bosch helps different schools and colleges to set up labs and
supplies them the required instruments and funds.
NEIGHBOURHOOD PROJECTS
 Neighbourhood Projects are identified by plant
management in Bosch India plants, as per their
local society needs.
 Nashik Run-Nashik Run is a community run with 20,000
people in participation every year. Nashik Run was
organised by Bosch and other corporates in 2003 to bring
about a change in the lives of the economically backward,
by raising funds for their livelihood in the district, which had
witnessed an increase in the number of underprivileged at
the grass roots level. Projects the event funds include
shelters for the aged, women, orphans, providing training
for the intellectually challenged, visually impaired and also,
skilling the less capable
 Check Dam - Check Dams are being constructed to reduce
velocity of water thereby reducing erosion. This is a
neighborhood Bosch CSR project initiated by Nashik Plant
management. Already 7 Check Dams are operationa
 Reverse Osmosis (RO) Plants- Initiated by the Jaipur Plant,
RO plants provide clean and safe drinking water to the
villagers. Built and maintained by Bosch, so far, 8 RO plants
have been built that benefit 4,000 families.
 Mid-Day Meals Kitchen-Bosch has agreed to sponsor the
construction of a centralized mid-day meal Kitchen, which will
be based in Jigani at Anekal Taluk, Karnataka. The kitchen,,
aims to provide mid-day meals to 15,000 children (to be
extended up to 30,000 children) in Bidadi as well as in
schools situated around Anekal Taluk. For many children, who
would have to work for a square meal every day, the food
from this Kitchen will come as a boon not only because they
can satiate their hunger but also because they get an
opportunity to access education.
