SASSOT implemented an incentive program to encourage Sport Makers to record more volunteer hours. They offered vouchers and branded clothing as prizes for recording 10+ hours. Gift cards resulted in few recordings while hooded tops motivated 40 people to record hours. SASSOT found incentives work best when tailored to volunteers' interests. They now incentivize partner organizations and are considering rewarding workplaces.

• £100 worth of Love2Shop high street vouchers.
• £100 worth of Amazon vouchers.
These incentives were given away through a prize draw, which was open to all
Sport Makers who recorded their first 10 hours during a certain period.
• SASSOT Sport Makers branded hooded tops
This incentive was available only to Sport Makers who attended an event at a
local college. The CSP revisited the college two to three months after the event
and asked students to record their hours there and then. Any who recorded
10+ hours was given a top.

Top tips on making incentives work

• Monitor and evaluate incentive schemes - the CSP evaluated the
voucher incentive scheme and found that it was not cost effective. With
this in mind, they have reduced investment in this area and instead
focussed on hooded tops and partner incentives.
• Find out what your Sport Makers want – SASSOT found that vouchers
were not an incentive to the students, but that hooded tops were, which
resulted in a successful incentive scheme.
• Revisiting Sport Makers – the CSP returned to the local college two to
three months after the event. This enabled them to collect recorded hours,
reward those Sport Makers who had completed 10+ hours and also remind
and encourage the other Sport Makers who hadn’t reached 10 hours to do
more sport making.

• Incentivising organisations – SASSOT are starting to offer incentives to
some colleges which provide Sport Makers. For each Sport Maker who
records 10+ hours, the CSP gives the college £10 to be spent on
enhancing the education and development of their Sport Makers (as long
as a minimum of 50% of their attendees record 10+ hours).
• Incentivising workplace Sport Makers – the CSP are considering
incentivising Sport Makers from workplaces by paying for team days out
once a certain number record 10+ hours. One workplace has asked for a
donation to be made to charity for each Sport Maker who records 10
hours.
