State of Anti-Doping
Past,Present,and Future
There had beennotestingat Divisional competitionsuntil 2014. Three testswere carriedout
at a cost of £1500. Two positives. One lifterleftthe testedcompetitionwithoutnotification.
One of the positive lifterspaid£500 to coverthe cost of the test.In YNEPFTarget Testingis
carriedout basedonintelligence.
There had beenregulartestingat National PowerliftingChampionshipswhenPowerliftingwas
part of BWLA as theywere able togainfundingfromUK Sport. There has beentestingatsome
National competitionsduringthe existence of GBPF,limitationsdue tofundingdifficulties
linkedwith the lackof NGB recognitionandthe inabilitytoaccessfunding.
Thisyear the YNEPFexecutive agreedaflexiblebudgetof about£3000 for dopingcontrol at
Divisional Championships. The organizationforthistobe done bymyself the Chairmanof
YNEPF.A rebate of £2110 from EnglishPowerliftingAssociation(EPA) hasbeenearmarkedfor
part fundingfortestingthisyear.The entryfee forcompetitionswasrecentlyincreasedfrom
£15 to £20 withthe intentionof the increase beingusedtofund testing.
9. Anti Doping Today
Anti-Dopingprogrammes are failing.
Look at the news…Nike’sOregonProject…RugbyPositives…LookatUKAD.

Continueddopingoccurseventhoughthere are sophisticatedtestingprocedures.
Massive abuse of Steroidsespeciallyinrecreational gymgoersandunder 30s withthe
problemescalatingin16– 23 year old.
Some suggestthatthe biggestdopingproblemmightexistatGBPFNational level.
GBPF International liftersstandahighchance of beingtested.
Some divisional lifterswhomake aqualifyingtotal NEVERorRARELY enterGBPF
Championships.Maybe dopingisabiggerprobleminthe divisions.Theyfearbeingtestedat
GBPF events.
The thinkingof the corrupt lifterforcheatinginaDivisional competitionmaywell be based
alongthe linesof….“Theyhaven’tgotthe moneyto testso the chancesare there will be no
testingorverylittle.If acompetitionhas120 liftersandthe divisionisonlyable tofund5

Supplements are a Major Cause of ADV
Supplementsare responsiblefor44% Anti-DopingRule Violation(ADRV)
Takingsupplementsincreasesthe riskof ADRV.Issuesare well known;incorrectlabels,
contamination,internetpurchase,feel good,DopeyDopers,etc.
Supplementusersare 3.5 timesmore likelytobe doping.Supplementsare recognisedasa
gatewayto doping.
Supplementsare notregulated.Medicineshave averystrictcontrol before theyare
available.Notsoforsupplements.
Supplementscanbe checkedon http://www.informed-sport.com/ ….. buttheycost£15
more;and theyare still notboundtobe clean…..sowhywaste mymoney onthem?
The liftingcommunityhasa limitedknowledge of Anti-Doping. Supplementsare standardin
the majorityof gymswhere regulartrainingwithweightshappens.Supplementsare sold,
taken,sharedandare lockedintogymculture.Anyone whobeginstotrainregularlywill be
aware of supplementsandmanywill starttouse them. Some of those thendecide toenter

15. Barriers to Clean Lifting.
1. Change not wantedasit is perceivedthatitwill notbe easyto achieve.Noteasytotake on
IPF/Lifterssetintheirways/all redtape fornothing/
2. Limitedcomputerskillsforsome olderliftersandofficials.
3. High percentage of steroidandsupplementuse inthe trainingenvironment.
4. Time,uncertaintyof successandcosts forcertification.
5. Reluctance togive up supplements.
6. It is a change unwantedasour sport isfairly cleanIam cleanand all who I know are clean.
7. It is noteasy tobe a whistle blowerandreportanti-dopingasImightbe wrong/it’sabaddecision
by mytrainingpartner/Ihave coachedthe lifterforyears/it’safriend/etc.
8 Anti-dopingisforproperbigsports…powerliftingismore apastime thana sport.
9. The greatestriskisat National Championshipsnotdivisional competitions.
10 Just because youhave a recordand have done a course doesnot meanyouare clean. Some will
continue tocheat.Theywill gothroughthe education, getcertificationbutbecause theyare corrupt
theywill notfollowthe CleanLifterprinciples.Theyremaincheats.
Remove Barriers To Clean Lifting.
1. A level playingfieldisexpectedatcompetitions. The true spirit of sport…I was beatenfairlyby
someone whostartedlevel andendedupahead.Change canbe easyif there isa commitmentandif
it iswell managed. The IPFhave anindefensible position.Lifterssetintheirwaysneedtobe coached
intoacceptance of change.The changesincertification,documentationandeducationwill notbe
seenasred tape but a way of ensuringthatall have the informationtheyneedtomake goodchoices
and enable themselvesandthe sportto be clean
2. If individualsfeel theydonothave the computerskillstheycanbe givensupport.
3. Trainingenvironmentsthathave a highpercentage of steroid use andsupplement use are
gatewaystoADRV and extravigilance oravoidance isneeded.
4. Two or three hoursof commitmentisneededinitially.Toensure success trainingand coachingwill
be available. The biggestcostisthe CoachCleanat £14. A subsidyfromthe divisionandsimple
fundraisingeliminates the problemof cost.
5. It is notcompulsorytogive up supplementsbutthose whodonotgive themupknow that they
live withrisks.
6. Individualswill know if theyare cleanif theyare informed. The cleancoachwill helpliftersmake
the right decisionstoremainclean.LastyearYNEPFtested3 and twowere positive.Noone canbe
sure about howcleanour sportis as there hasnot beenenoughresearchdone.
16. 7. If youbelieve inafaircompetitionthenyoumustreport…
“BUT I HAVE NOEVIDENCE...”
“BUT IT’S JUST A SUSPICION...”
“BUT THEY’LL KNOW I REPORTED THEM...”
“BUT IT’S NOT MY PLACE...”
Whendrug cheats compete, your medal chances, your record, you qualificationall suffer.
Whateveryour reason for hidingyour suspicions,it’sin your intereststo tell.
8 Anti-dopingisforall sportsthat expectthe performance tobe aproduct of onlythe athlete. If it
doesnotapplyto powerliftingitmeanspowerliftinghasnoworthand whoevercheatsthe bestwins.
There mightbe a practice to dope at DivisionalandnotenterGBPFevents. The researchhasnot
beendone.Butitis a fact that ADRV happensat divisional comps. Itisa fact that notall who qualify
for National Championshipsenterthem. Intelligence identifiesthose thatshouldbe targeted.
9. Dopingis a possiblyabiggerproblemat Divisional competitions.
10 The corruptcan be identifiedthrough reportingand intelligence.Theycanbe targettestedin
competitions. Outof competitiontestingprocedurescanbe initiated. The badapplescan be
weededout.
Where could it lead to?
1 A cleansport.
2 A lossof members. Don’twantthose people inoursport.

Final Thoughts
Powerlifting is and always will be a sport that can be enjoyed at any level of fitness physical or
mental regardless of creed or gender.
Many International disputes would be easily settled if it took Powerlifting codes and ethics on
board.
Anyone looking to start should take in the acronym “It’s not where you start but how you wish
to finish.
Remember the victory does not always go to the swiftest! But to the one who finishes the
race”.
