This document discusses the role of ethics and values in higher education. It addresses two main questions: how can universities become more decisive partners in global issues, and how can they shape humanity's common future? The heart of universities are academic values like freedom, integrity, quality, and collegiality. However, these values face threats from conservatism, instrumentalism, and external demands. Universities must uphold both human values and academic values. Guidelines can support values but should not replace them. Higher education has a twofold ethical purpose - to prevent misconduct and challenge institutions to build ethical commitment. Universities must serve as role models globally by representing values, participating in public debate, and fostering students as academic citizens and future
