you have to communicate to sell your ideas to others. By using storytelling, you can 
captivate and elevate your ideas effectively. ! 
Part I Finding your Crucible Stories 
1. Who are you? (What are your Goals) 
In order to fully grasp who you are, you must take note of two things: where you 
come from and where you are going in life. In the business world, your destination 
is more fascinating than your origin.

2. Think about major events (What events have shaped you so far) 
When you think back to the events and incidents that were turning points, you can 
learn some lessons from he “aha” or “euraka” moments. Very often in life, pain 
clarifies, therefore pain fortifies.

3. Learning from the Past (What did you take away?) 
For every major event that has shaken you, there is a key lesson from it. Have you thought 
about the lesson how you can share it with others? Defining moments give rise to 
decisive visions; only for those who take the time to think and act.

4. Compelling opening and Close 
The human brain tends to remember what it said first and last. It is called the primacy 
and recency effect. For this reason, craft your opening and close very carefully to gain 
an optimum impact. Make your last drop, as good as the first.

5. Rhetorical Devices (They add color, value and depth) 
When you write, make every word to count. As far as possible, incorporate 
metaphors, humor, antithesis, anaphora and call backs to give your story 
a stronger appeal. These devices will sharpen and heighten your message and delivery.

6. Start with the end in mind (Pay off) 
Unless a story teaches a valuable lesson, it is worthless. Thus, start by thinking about 
the take-away to the listener. All details should be aimed at supporting that lesson or 
pay off. When the pay off is good, the story is remembered.

7. Beware of body language and tone 
Although your voice is the vehicle of delivery, it has a very marginal effect on the 
understanding of your message. Thus, pay close attention to your gestures, tone and 
pitch. Gestures and tone; both speak louder than your voice.

8. Deliver with passion 
Your passion is very important. It breathes life into your story and your audience feeds 
on that. A good presentation is a story steeped in passion, prose and 
poetry. It is an art that takes a long time to hone. Thus, you can learn it.

9. Preparation is key to success 
Never let anybody to out-prepare you. When you are well prepared, this shows 
through your composure. This means, you must have told your story to someone else 
to their feedback, and to weed out any rough edges that may obscure your 
message or the pay off.

Gideon For-mukwai For-mukwai 
Gideon is an award-winning speaker with over a decade of international experience 
from Asia, Middle East, Africa, Europe and North 
America. He has presented training programmes to 
executives from organisations such as Oracle, Siemens, 
Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Dell Computers, Shell Eastern 
Petroleum, National University of Singapore, DBS 
Bank, Gillette and more. 
He is the founder of XtraMile Solutions, founded in 
2004 in Singapore. It is dedicated training services 
provider. XtraMile and its associates have directly trained over 15,550 professionals 
and executives around the world. 
Gideon ‘s forte lies in is his ability to communicate complex issues with simple practical 
and metaphorical narratives that keep audiences engaged. He combines his journalistic 
research know-how, compelling storytelling, and academic curiosity in finding and 
sharing new ideas that participants worldwide. 
He a former Senior Officer and Instructor with the Singapore Civil Defence Force 
(SCDF), Gideon is a graduate from MA programme in Journalism from the Reynolds 
School of Journalism, University of Nevada, Reno.

Whether as a leader or a follower, you have to communicate to sell your ideas to others. By using storytelling, you can captivate and elevate your ideas effectively. ! Part I Finding your Crucible Stories 1. Who are you? (What are your Goals) In order to fully grasp who you are, you must take note of two things: where you come from and where you are going in life. Think about major events (What events have shaped you so far) When you think back to the events and incidents that were turning points, you can learn some lessons from he “aha” or “euraka” moments. Compelling opening and Close The human brain tends to remember what it said first and last. It is called the primacy and recency effect. For this reason, craft your opening and close very carefully to gain an optimum impact. Rhetorical Devices (They add color, value and depth) When you write, make every word to count. As far as possible, incorporate metaphors, humor, antithesis, anaphora and call backs to give your story a stronger appeal. Start with the end in mind (Pay off) Unless a story teaches a valuable lesson, it is worthless. Thus, start by thinking about the take-away to the listener.
