Designing, analyzing and optimizing applications for rapidly evolving computer systems is often a tedious, ad-hoc, costly and error prone process due to an enormous number of available design and optimization choices combined with complex interactions between all components. Auto-tuning, run-time adaptation and machine learning based techniques have been investigated for more than a decade to address some of these challenges but are still far from the widespread production use. This is not only due to large optimization spaces, but also due to a lack of a common methodology to discover, preserve and share knowledge about behavior of existing computer systems with ever changing interfaces of analysis and optimization tools.
In this talk I presented a new version of the modular, open source Collective Mind Framework and Repository (cTuning.org, c-mind.org/repo) for collaborative and statistical analysis and optimization of program and architecture behavior. Motivated by physics, biology and AI sciences, this framework helps researchers to gradually expose tuning choices, properties and characteristics at multiple granularity levels in existing systems through multiple plugins. These plugins can be easily combined like LEGO to build customized collaborative or private in-house repositories of shared data (applications, data sets, codelets, micro-benchmarks and architecture descriptions), modules (classification, predictive modeling, run-time adaptation) and statistics from multiple program executions. Collected data is continuously analyzed and extrapolated using online learning to predict better optimizations or hardware configurations to effectively balance performance, power consumption and other characteristics.
This approach was initially validated in the MILEPOST project to remove the training phase of a machine learning based self-tuning compiler, and later extended in the Intel Exascale Lab to connect various tuning tools with an in-house customized repository. During this talk, I will demonstrate the auto-tuning using the new version of this framework and off-the-shelf mobile phones while describing encountered challenges and possible solutions.

This document summarizes a student's master's thesis project on inferring user interests from microblog data through opinion mining. The project developed a framework that uses contextual and emotion analysis of Twitter data to identify users' interests. It extracts interest candidates using POS tagging, keyword extraction, and rule-based concept extraction. It then classifies emotions and filters interests based on positive emotions. The identified interests are ranked and categorized to infer users' top interests. Experiments showed the approach achieved over 80% precision on average at identifying top interests. Future work could analyze emotion patterns over time and consider negative emotions.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

- 2. The problem ● Traditional delivery systems may sometimes take few days to deliver items. ● Delivery process is inefficient in large geographic areas and also in metropolitan areas. ● How expensive is it? Are you getting value for your money.
- 4. Proposed Solution ● We use the most powerful resource we have for our delivery system: ● Humans. ● … use the crowd to deliver goods.
- 5. Motivation ● Reliable, efficient and automated. ● Selling items should require unnecessary human effort. ● Delivering process should be automatic (too much small steps) ● No limitation as to what and how much can be delivered.
- 7. Proposed System Design A crowdsource delivery system that depends entirely on the crowd to operate. Step 1. Sellers post their products online and specify delivery price. Step 3. Products are delivered fast and efficiently. Step 2. System notifies and find runners to deliver products.
- 8. Users ● Seller ● Buyer ● Runner (in charge of delivering)
- 9. Posting your products online Details of the item (price, condition, model, etc...) Location of the item. Delivery fee
- 10. Consumers BUY No worries about delivery fees. This is paid by the seller to the runner (deliverer). User can offer “tip” to qualify runner’s service (this information is also stored).
- 11. Location information This feature is the most important to power the delivery system. ● Keep track of runners (tracking system). ● Calculate other information (directions, distance, etc…) Challenge: Not many people are willing to share their location information. This may present some security issues.
- 12. Recommendation System (products) ● Location information will be able to fuel recommendation system ● In turn, this will propel more successful deliveries and sales.
- 13. Reputation system ● How can we trust who delivers the products online? ● Reputation system can be used to help build a more trusted and reliable platform. How??? ● More tips and reviews to runners means that they earn points and in turn build their reputation.
- 14. Social and Fun Is there any need for money to be involved? Make it a meetup social network?
- 15. Business model? ● Personalized Advertising ● Commission from deliveries
- 17. Conclusion ● We proposed a crowdsource delivering system that can help to improve the traditional delivery systems; not replace them. ● There are many challenges but the opportunities outweigh them all. (Reputation, Recommendation, Social, etc..)
