GSD 2012 Fall Option Studio- Common Framework by Christopher Lee
The project is situated in the CBD site of east Xiamen. Architecturally, it rethinks the space for mixing working, living, and cooperation through manipulating the urban dominant type- Qilou. From the social point of view, the project is also the manifestation of the political circumstance between Xiamen (China) and Kinmen (Taiwan).
The original park proposed by HOK cuts the site into two halves. As the interpretation of shop houses in macro scale, two rolls of residential bars, which situated in between HOK buildings from each side, stretched inward and divided existing fabric into different urban pockets, leaving a large void space on ground level. The circular shape of the void area creates a superficial symbol of unification. The office units are scattered in the circular void area. Each office unit consists of an exterior space, a transitional corridor space, an interior space, and a shared space in the back. This is another interpretation of the shop house.
Considering the issue of Cross-Strait cooperation, the project argues against the sameness of conventional CBD and the notion of unification. Though its architecture creates an absolute and trans-scaling generic common framework for the entire site, the use of different landscape and variations in accessibility creates a softness and programmatic difference between the two sides. Within the common framework, the two sides interact. Yet through acknowledging and respecting the differences, the two sides gain benefits without decreasing their own values. That is the essence of cooperation.

June 2016 Digital Humanities Hub CAKE slidesAndrew Thomas
These slides are from a short presentation I did at an event for arts and humanities stakeholders at a CAKE event, at the Digital Humanities Hub on the University of Birmingham campus (http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/facilities/digitalhumanitieshub/index.aspx). It was about using web technologies to easily create digital landscapes that can be widely shared, widely engaging, fully inclusive, and fun. One of the interesting aspects I wanted to get over is that web-based landscapes open up new ways for humanities practitioners and technical developers to collaborate in creating real-world and conceptual digital landscapes.
Cloud computing is changing the way we access and consume computing resource. The purpose of this presentation is to impress upon the audience that cloud computing is not something "isolated" and "esoteric" affecting only some people or some companies or some industries. Cloud computing is a plenary resource
Cloud computing is a phenomenon affecting all of us and more importantly Benefiting each one of us .This presentation will show this with illustrations

It’s 2013. The shift to mobile is well and truly upon us, we’re at the transition point where Mobile Internet overtakes Desktop Internet usage and there is no going back. If you’re not designing responsively now then you better get cracking because what comes next is a big change to the way we design and build web experiences for humans.
The shift to mobile started making us think about devices, however almost all of our discussion is around what devices we support and where do we set our breakpoints. Could this focus on device capability be masking something bigger happening in the way humans are starting to behave with the web?
What if the fragmentation we’re seeing on Android is merely a glimpse into the device fragmentation of the future? What happens when a users’ experience can range from the interface of a watch to that of a building? How do we communicate with someone when they are walking down the street trying to locate something compared to kicking back on the sofa? How do we even know when they are doing one and not the other?
Contextually Responsive Design is quickly going to become a necessity - but this isn’t personalisation 2.0 or Content First under a different name. To truly design engaging experiences we need to consider how context shapes our behaviour. As Web Designers and Developers we’ve traditionally worked with people “sitting down to compute”. What happens when someone no longer wants to sit down at a computer to do something; ever?
This talk will start from the point of late 2013 and look forward six years. How do we expect people to behave? How will we design systems to cope, and what are the contexts in which people will use the web during its next age?
Given at Melbourne Be Responsive on 10 September 2013.
