Analysing the opening two minutes of Crash
The opening titles of crash are done purposefully to confuse the audience. The camera is unfocused so the audience cannot tell what they are looking at, thus confusing the audience which draws them in as they want to work out what is happening. The titles themselves are confusing. Against a black background the writing is moving blue and white patterns that look like water, these suggest water might be an important part of the film, but the audience can’t be sure, the patterns could also be lights. The titles would have been done like this purposefully to intrigue the audience The un clear objects are against a dark blue background. Dark colours/a lack of light is associated with unhappiness and have produced an ominous atmosphere to set up the rest of the scene. The distorted image originally looks like rain, but turns out to be snow. This use of pathetic fallacy hints that the audience are about to see something negative occur, or that something bad has already happened. Through out the opening credits slow, soft music is played in the background and an unknown voice can be heard. The music is serene but ominous, representing the calm after the storm, suggesting something bad had just happened. The first shot of characters is a close up of a mans face then a woman’s. The fact that they’re close ups means the audience can’t see what situation they are in which heightens their curiosity and draws them in more. The camera then cutting back to distorted shapes but the voices still being heard continues to intrigue the audience, particularly as they can now see something bad has happened and want to find out what it is. The male talking about not having any feeling or connection is important because it hints that will be part of the film and will interest the audience as they will want to know how that refers to him. Crash has subverted the convention of the opening to a thriller being fast and jumpy, like the Dark Knight is. It has slow, low pitched music rather then the common high pitched string instruments. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IS0DjPsPt4s
