2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

Jurassic parkJurassic park
The next scene shows a large squad of men. The mise-en-sene is
that the item in the crate is dangerous and not easily messed
with. This is shown with the men carrying Tasers and also
assault rifles. A subliminal message is sent to the audience
through the use of hardhats by the men. This suggest they are
wearing them for safety even thought there is little protection
elsewhere.
The lack of items
on screen is
beneficial as it
gets the audience
to focus on what
they hear instead
of what they see.
The lighting used in this scene makes the
audience focus on a specific part, as the
audience is blinded from looking
elsewhere, as the container is the main
point of action.
The camera angle here suggests
that the men are strong as the
low-angle shot makes them seem
menacing when they have not
encountered the creature inside
the cage.
A slight mist covers men
which makes the
atmosphere seem
mysterious and gives the
audience the sense that
something is going to
happen.
When the main title fades
away, the audience is left
with the red outline of the
title. The colour red could
suggest the colour of blood
as the film involves
dinosaurs.
The use of orange hard
hats ties the film into
American roots and
makes a better connection
to American audiences as
they can relate to the hard
hats.
3. Saving private RyanSaving private Ryan
American flag opens up the movie which
shows some kind of patriotism towards
America and could also suggest that the
film is based in America.
There is no music in this scene, the
only thing that the audience can
hear is the fluttering of the flag in
the wind which draws the
audiences attention towards the
flag.
A long shot here is used to show the
main character walking on his own.
This makes him the focus as he is seen
to be walking away from his family in
some kind of rush.
The music playing in this scene is
orchestral which makes the situation
seem sad as the music increases in pace
and the main character also seems to the
pace of the music.
The camera zooms in on the
main protagonists face which
gives the audience the chance
to see that he is crying. This
suggests some kind of built up
emotions which he releases
when he sees whatever the
audience sees.
The scene transition here is good as it
zooms in on the main protagonists eyes
which then makes the audience believe
that the film is going to be from his
perspective.
The family behind the main
protagonist is shown to be
comforting him as his wife has her
hand over his shoulder and the
rest of the family appears to be
looking at him as if they are
concerned. However this shows
that the family is understanding
of what has happened and that
they already know the story.
4. JawsJaws
The opening shot shows a young
man and young girl both running
along a beach. Both of them
appear drunk and this shows
that they are reckless and
something bad is about to
happen.
A long shot is used here to show the
ocean in which the girl is about to jump
into. This gets the audience to see what
situation the characters are in and gets
them to think about what could happen
under the waves.
The lighting used here is very dark and the audience is
unable to see what the characters look like as they
appear to be just silhouettes. This means the audience
can not connect with the characters which suggests that
something might happen to both of them.
There is a lack of
anything in this scene
as this helps the scene
to establish the
emptiness of the ocean
and the water.
The silhouettes of the buoy
and the girl show o the
audience that the girl is very
lonely in this scene and also
the contrast that the guy is
still on the beach without her.
The close up shot here is used
to show how the female
character is all alone, this
relates to the old fashioned
view of women being fragile
and unable to defend
themselves.
Because of the time of day of the
scene, the sun is rising over the sky
which is the only source of light
visible. This could potentially show
the sun being a safety source as in the
next shot she is attacked from the dark
side.
5. Catch me if you canCatch me if you can
The scene here is
reminiscent of a 80s
game show as the
title seems to be
funky and also the
colour used of the set
makes the mood
happy and energetic.
The music here is
upbeat and it also
allows the audience
to feel like they are
watching a
completely different
movie.
When the three
men come
onstage they are
all dressed in
pilot outfits
which could
suggest
something that
could happen in
the movie.
A long shot is used
here to show the
three men and also
it relates to the fact
that the narrator is
asking which one
of them is the real
impersonator.
The narrator is
telling the
audience the story
here so that they
know what's going
to happen to the
character and all of
his past
endeavours.
The camera cuts here
from the man
answering the
question to the
audience being able
to fully see who the
man that caught him
is.
The mood set by this scene suggests that the film has some comedy elements to it as the bright lighting and the variety of colours
shows that this game show is more of a game than an actual contest. However this is contrasted with the end of this scene as it
transitions to a gloomy prison where you can hear stressed out characters shouting out a lot of commands.
