3. What is Plastic
• Plastic is material consisting of any of a wide
range of
• synthetic or semi-synthetic organic
compounds
• that are malleable and so can be molded into
solid objects
• Plastics are man made materials made from
petrochemicals
4. Types of Plastics
• Thermo plastics- can be reheated and
moulded e.g.acylics, nylon
• Thermo Setting-The plastic harden on
heating, cannot be moulded e.g.
melamine
• Bio Plastics- obtained from natural
materials- e.g.corn starch, maize
• Recycled plastics-made from recycled
plastic materials It is cheap
5. Use of plastics in every day
life

6. Problems of plastics
►Plastics stick around in the environment
for ages - threat to life
►Difficult to dispose off
►Eat contaminated food at times via
packaging
► Micro plastics go in our body via food
7. • Trash dumps allow pollutants to enter soil and
causes:
• Soil pollution
• Water pollution
• Air pollution
• Kills animals through ingestion
• Harmful for plant life
• Blocks drains and sewers
• Burning of plastics release toxic chemicals into
air
• Burying deep in the soil disturbs inner layers by
increasing pressure
10. Plasti-Culture
•The Ministry of Agriculture believes that its
optimal application is a step in the right direction
to achieve the overall vision of doubling farm
income by 2022
11. Uses of Plastics in Agriculture
The key benefits of plastic culture include;
Increase in crop yields
Reduced use of water (~30-40%) and other
agricultural inputs like agro chemicals and fertilizers
Plastic culture can well be imbibed in the main
frame system within the ambit of sustainable
agriculture practices domestically.
Its effective implementation is likely to result in
robust food grain production and consequent rise in
agriculture GDPin excess of 4 per cent.
12. Plastic is used in different forms in agriculture
Spread over fields with giant rollers
Plastics films insulates roots and prevents weeds
Moderates soil temperature that increase yield
Increases food quality
Minimize water consumption
Improve certain flower production
Rain water conservation
Use of pesticides is reduced
16. Plastic Mulching
Plastic mulch is a product used
in a similar fashion to mulch
to suppress weeds and
conserve water in crop production and
landscaping
17. Side Effect of Plastic Mulching

19. Problems with Plastics Culture
►Overtime plastic film residues can decrease
soil porosity and air circulation, lower
fertility
►Fragments of film release toxic substances
which can be taken up by vegetable crops
and pose health risks
►Film fragments can accumulate toxins applied
to crops, harmful for animals
►Not easy to recover and reuse
20. Conti....
►Decrease soil air circulation
►change microbial communities
►lower farm land fertility
►enter into the food chain
21. Micro Plastic
• Micro plastics are very small pieces of plastic
that pollute the environment
• Microplastics are not a specific kind of
plastic, but
• rather any type of plastic fragment that is
less than 5 mm in length
22. Effects of Microplastic
►New research from Anglia Ruskin University
states that micro plastics in soil are causing
earthworms to lose weight.
►Soil affected by micro plastics produces less
crop yield due to less productive earthworms
and lower pH levels.
►If this trend continues, our entire agricultural
system could be compromised.
24. Methods to reduce plastic pollution
• Strict Govt. laws
• Avoid single use plastics
• Carry paper cloth bags for shopping
• Use food grade quality plastics
• Choose products with less of packaging
• Avoid clothes that have synthetic micro fibers
