On Monday 24th August, the UK Circular Plastics Network and KTN hosted a virtual pitching and networking webinar.
The webinar provided collaboration and pitching opportunities to engage the UK Circular Plastics Community, whereby companies had the opportunity to pitch their innovative products or service ideas to potential partners. The event was aimed at innovative UK companies with the potential to scale and were looking for partners or to showcase their innovations.

As part of the Clean Growth Grand Challenge within the Government’s Industrial Strategy, a £60m Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Challenge was announced in Summer 2019 which is expected to be matched by funding of up to £149 million from industry.
The challenge will deliver strategic leadership and a co-ordinated programme of research and innovation for the design, production, supply, recovery and recycling of plastic packaging across the entire value chain.
The Opportunity:
Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £1 million from the Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Programme to fund feasibility projects for solutions to create a more circular economy for plastic packaging. Projects must show how they will deliver a more circular plastics packaging supply chain and deliver the targets of the UK Plastics Pact.
Projects are welcome that trial smart and sustainable packaging innovation across 4 themes:
- Materials
- Design
- Technology or process
- Business model or behaviour change

KTN has launched a Metamaterials Innovation Network, which aims to promote the UK’s commercial exploitation and technology transfer of metamaterials through brokered or encouraged collaboration across the value chain.
Despite the UK’s academic research leadership in this field, metamaterials lack industrial uptake from end-users. Commercialisation of metamaterials is currently challenging as these materials are not easy to understand, require sizable resources to deliver useful products, require skills and expertise that are difficult to find and require the creation of novel supply chains. Join us to understand how this Innovation Network will enable greater uptake of these materials.
Value propositions enabled by digital twins in the context of servitization v002Shaun West
Purpose: The motivation of this paper is to investigate how digital twins can enable the design of new value propositions in digitally enabled servitization. This is important, as the application of this technology is an opportunity to deliver new value propositions for customers, and for the supplier to gain deeper understanding of the actual performance of the equipment (Kowalkowski and Ulaga, 2017). This builds upon the assessment of service value co-creation supported by digital twin technologies (Meierhofer & West, 2019).
Design/Methodology/Approach: Ten cases have been assessed in this paper using different dimensions, and a cross-case analysis to consider value co-creation, value measures, support to the value proposition, and the servitization context. All of the cases are from an Innosuisse-supported project in Switzerland and were selected for their diversity.
Findings: Classifying the digital twins by service proved useful to understand each one and its position within the business system. Knowing which business functions the twin supports helps to identify and confirm value co-creation opportunities as well as the possible areas impacted. It also provides different servitization perspectives that can support new and disruptive models, which is helpful for firms looking for new services to support their customers. The lifecycle perspective confirms the links between different phases and can provide new insight for the development of digital twins. The cross case analysis confirmed that a digital twin could support the development of new value positions within the context of servitization, as well as allow others (e.g., installers or asset owners) to develop and sell their own value solutions.

The E-commerce sector is in many ways driving innovation in freight transport. In Sweden, the e-commerce industry has formulated a series of areas where the freight industry needs to be improved, either by process improvement, service development or infrastructure development.
This talk (45 mins) looks at these issues from a digital development point of view for the freight industry. A lot has to happen, but much is also possible.

Cost is typically a trade-off between: economic, social,

Criticality measures how risky a node is to the
operation of a network
Measuring criticality enables nodes to proactively respond
to anomalies
In telecommunications, data packets are sent around
the network. If they can’t be sent, they are queued.
The more queued packets, the worse the network
functionality. If key nodes have long queues, major
sections of the network cannot communicate.
Design distributed measures of criticality so for each
node, information for a local subset surrounding the
node is used to compute it:
scalable
when there is a cost to communication
When whole network is not visible (e.g. in supply nets)
Size indicates queue size. One can see that the red
node have long queues, blocking two parts of the
network from each other
