This presentation is designed to transition paralegals, as users of IT, into the role of administrator, the strategist, steward and trouble-shooter of IT.
A basic understanding of a law office network is essential. This understanding includes; (1) basic and advanced knowledge of a network, (2) the requirements for restoration and recovery of a network and finally (3) perfecting IT’s strategic plan by correctly identifying the needs of the users and leveraging the existing and future network services to address those needs.
This presentation assumes the attendees have a basic understanding of desktop PCs and networks. As paralegals, you have day-to-day experience with your firm’s technology and phone system. If you choose to become a law office administrator, you’ll need a different perspective on IT management. This presentation also assumes that you accept the requirement that the firm administrator must demonstrate competency in explaining IT network and structure requirements to the owners of the firm along with projecting the necessary competence to IT staff and contractors who support this essential service for the firm.
1. Dear Human Resources,
Enclosed you will find a copy of my resume to apply for the position of account executive.
Though my experience is in the technical area I am transitioning into sales. I have experience dealing
with both in-house employees and company clients and have given presentations. It also has been very
important to me to interact with my own clients with product knowledge. These experiences have given
me strong foundations in both the technical and the “soft” skills of IT.
In my consulting business I have provided maintenance on networks and made servers and
workstations run faster and more securely. For example, I have resolved issues where a client would
purchase a new computer and the server could see the computer but the computer could not see the
server. I have removed viruses and and other malware. I have worked on clients' systems through
remote access. I have focused on the clients' business imperatives, made decisions within the clients'
constraints, and provided services in a timely manner. I also received a Microsoft Achievement Award
in 2004 for discovering a bug in Windows that prevented internet access with Norton Anti-Spam.
At BaronData, after a six week training program, I worked in technical support. I have done technical
support for Computer Aided Transcription (C.A.T.) which translates court stenography into English.
The software was on IBM PCs and compatibles. I have also given in-house presentations and training
to other C.S.R.s. which required strong presentation skills and professional demeanor. I wrote and
made revisions to the accompanying training documentation. While at Benchmark Computer Systems,
I worked on accounting software and dealt with clients within time constraints. I wrote manuals for
accounts receivable and service maintenance packages. I have resolved customer problems with the
concerted efforts of field engineers and programming and sales departments.
My educational background has given me a strong grounding in math, science, and computing. I also
have a B.A. in sociology. My coursework in sociology included a two term research project and
graduate work in mediation and dispute resolution. I have also given presentations in classes and
written lengthy term papers. I have had mathematics courses that include Inferential Statistics, Discrete
Structures, two quarters of Numerical Analysis and a graduate class in Mathematical Modeling and
Computer Simulations. I have also had classes in FORTRAN, Basic and COBOL. I was the Treasurer
of the Society of Physics Students at Cal-State Hayward and the Co-Chair of events such as the 91'
Eclipse Viewing. With that came the role as a spokesman the newspaper and radio news media.
Your job requirements incorporate technical abilities, and I believe that I can meet any of those
requirements. This is the type of sales position I wish to attain. It is important that your sales
representative be familiar with the ins and outs of your clients' technology needs. I believe my
combination of technical skills, consulting experience, and business sensibilities would serve you well
in this position.
Thank you for reviewing my credentials and thank you for your time. I look forward to speaking with
you in the near future.
Yours truly,
Jerome Papa
