- Welcome to a presentation on copyright law and an overview of copyright basics. This video is designed for EDTC 6340 at unisversity of texas at brownsville
- Let me introduce myself. My name is Candace James. I am first year graduated student at the university of texas at brownsville. Through UTB I am pursuing my masters in Educational Technology.
- As a master student it is important to understand copyright laws and how to give credit where credit is due. Stated on this slide is a reference to Copy right law of 1976. (read quote) This law protects original works and reserve the right of the copyright to the owner.
- Plagiarism is defined as (read quote). If the work isn’t original you must give credit to the author or authors and you must make reference to work in your document or presentation.
- Fair Use (click) state that some copyright material doesn’t “require permission from the copyright holder or its agent.” It gives the user legal protection to use some materials in some instances such as commentary, parody, news reporting, research and education. The Teach act stands Technology, Education, Copyright, Harmonization. The teach act plays an important role in distance learning. It allows non-profit education institutions to display materials that are copyrighted. The education institution must meet certain requirements as stated in the TEACH act in order to use the copyrighted materials. To read more about the requirements, Pause the presentation and click the magnify glass. Piracy is another term for plagiarizing. The term is most often associated with digital resources and software such as copying movies and games.
- In the 1990s and early 2000s the use of Internet resource as references was highly frowned upon, but with the increase of digital materials and resources located on the internet. Using internet resources is very common now days. When using internet resources one should assess and check for accuracy of the information. Some things that should be researched are Wrote it? Who published it? and look document validation. To learn more about evaluating information on the internet Pause the video and click the magnify glass underneath the words “use of internet resources.” There several different citing styles. Apa, Mla, and CMS.
