Each point using the peel method thus becomes a
paragraph further structuring your paper
READ CAREFULLY so as to fulfill the task. Less is more in
some instances and if you find yourself rambling, that’s
an indication of no understanding om the text

Is a story that narrates or
tells the story of certain
events that have transpired

Focuses on creating vivid
imagery through focusing on
detailed words and adjectives

  • 3. TEXT, AUDIENCE AND PURPOSE TEXT These are the actual words you are reading and can take a various amount of forms or genres . EG letters AUDIENCE These are the people your body of text is targeted towards. It can be a general audience or a very specific group of people or yourself PURPOSE This is what your text aims to achieve. Can be under the broad categories of to entertain, to inform and to persuade CONCLUSIONS A thorough knowledge of these three will result in better writing as if you know WHY you’re writing (purpose) WHO you’re writing to ( audience) and HOW you’re 01 02 03 04

  • 6. Genre means type ● advertisements ● brochures ● leaflets ● editorials ● news stories ● articles ● reviews ● blogs ● letters ● podcasts ● (auto)biographies ● travel writing ● diaries ● essays ● scripted speech ● narrative writing ● investigative journalism ● descriptive writing.

  • 8. LETTER’S WHAT IS IT? A letter is a text written for the purpose of communicating a message with someone else. It can take two forms, formal and informal CONVENTIONS OF A LETTER INFORMAL ● “Dear” line ● Date ● “Yours” line ● Sign off your name ● Informal language ● Mixture of tenses FORMAL ● “Dear” line ● REF line ● Intentions of letter in first paragraph ● Yours line ● Sign off name with preffix ● Formal language ● Mixture of tense

SPEECHES AND TALKS 01 SPEECHES A speech is a presentation of a certain topic that s spoken in a certain manner 02 TALK Is essentially a speech but more informal and interactive with the audience without rigid constraints 03 Genre Conventions Clear three part structure, intro body and conclusion.

Articles And Reviews ARTICLES A section in a newspaperor magazine talking about a specific topic GENRE CONVENTIONS ➔ Heading ➔ By line ➔ Subheadings ➔ paragraphed REVIEWS A text that gives your opinion on somethinh and if it was “worth it” GENRE CONVENTIONS ➔ Opionated wording e.g. personally ➔ References to other pieces ➔ Direct address

PODCAST ➔ Spoken language features typical to spontaneous speech ➔ Informal register, varieties in tone and intonation, and possible interruptions. ➔ Use of rhetorical devices

Biographies and Memoirs and Memoir Historical account of personal events , to represent a theme or topic Conventions ● 1st Pov ● STory Telling ● Recount of memory and musing on it Biography and Autobiography An account of someone's life. If an auto, the person wrote it themselves Conventions ● 3rd or 1st person ● Factual accounts ● Reminiscent language ● Contains dialogue and descriptions While auto/biographies are a platform for well-known individuals to share the facts of their lives in their own words, memoirs are a format in which writers use their life experience in service of a larger theme or idea

Leaflets and Brochures Leaflets An informational pamphlet on a particular topic usually in the layout of a single paper Brochure An informational pamphlet once again but in the format of being folded three times Genre Conventions ➔ Imperative language and headings and subheadings ➔ Short and to the point ➔ Interactive language ➔ JUPITER It’s the biggest planet in the Solar System

HOW TO ANALYZE This applies for reflective commentaries for a text P oint E vidence E xplanation L ink Structuring each point into this format makes it easier to know what you’re saying and acts as a guide to follow. Each point using the peel method thus becomes a paragraph further structuring your paper READ CAREFULLY so as to fulfill the task. Less is more in some instances and if you find yourself rambling, that’s an indication of no understanding om the text

Narrative and Descriptive Writing Narrative Is a story that narrates or tells the story of certain events that have transpired Descriptive Focuses on creating vivid imagery through focusing on detailed words and adjectives To modify this graph, click on it, follow the link, change the data and paste the resulting graph here When to choose what? If you’re unable to articulate clearly your idea than a descriptive isn’t best for you. A narrative is easier in the event you can focu on chronology to gain marks
  • 18. Tips and Tricks To Pass AS level English A B C 40% D 25% 15% 20% PEEL How you structure and phrase your essay is ultimaltely the largest dependant of your mark. You can understand something, but if you can’t communicate that understanding zvafa LENGTH If you cannot be detailed then WRITE A LOT BAFETHU. Rather write a lot of one mark points and be on the 18/25 side of marks then analyze nonsense VOCABULARY Learn a few new words that’ll take your essay from drab to fab LINGUISTIC TECHNIQUES LET’S TALK ABOUT THAT
  • 19. SOME LANGUAGE FEATURES YOU SHOULD ALWAYS COMMENT ON POV Is it written in first second or third person? Tone How does the speaker sound? Angry, elated, confused? Atmosphere The mood of the text, euphoric, mystic, weary, shady? Lexical Field What type of vocabulary is being used? Sports related, nature related, communal related? Genre Conventions Could be anything to do with language form and structure OTHERS These are language techniques that may or may not be there differing from text to text. EG alliteration, anachronism, personification etc
  • 20. MORE TIPS PLANNING Dedicate five minutes before each question to planning, it sorts out your thoughts and makes the writing process faster! KNOW CONVENTIONS Knowing conventions is like having an outline where you just fill in the blanks. Detailed Text LEAVE NO STONE UNTURNED Be as detailed as possible exhausting all you can READ! Reading a book or two can amp up your vocabulary and better your readng skills and noticing details
