This document provides teaching notes for using a scientific case study on parental favoritism in American coots. The case study examines how scientists investigated whether parent coots favor ornamented chicks over non-ornamented chicks through selective feeding. The teaching notes describe presenting the case study information to students in stages to mimic how scientists progressively learn new details, encouraging hypothesis generation and experiment design. Students work in small groups to analyze each new part of the case before receiving more information, promoting critical thinking and the scientific method. The interrupted case method engages all students in collaborative problem-solving and reinforces objectives like experimental design and data interpretation.
