Analyse of Lady Gaga – Poker Face
I thought this would be a good song to analysis as it is different from other
music videos in the genre of pop. I know that this music video is pop as it has
the typical conventions which are found in the genre pop. For example: Lady
Gaga is the main focus in the music video which is a main convention in pop, she
is the main focus as she is the main artist within the music video. Even though
the music video has back up dancers Lady Gaga is still the main focus.
The image that Lady Gaga portrays is completely different from other pop
artists, this result to her and her music to be different from other pop music, her
videos being odd to suit her image.
The narrative of this music video is mainly performance which is done by Lady
Gaga. However, the music video conveys the actual message of the song, by
telling a story.
Camera
In this music video there is use of camera shots used, such as: close ups and
long shots. I think that these two shots areused as it shows theaudience Lady
Gagas personality; this is shown through her facial expressions and her outfits.
The close up shots are used to show that shelikes to dress unique, so she is
different fromthe restof the pop music videos.
The long shots are used to show that Lady Gaga is seen moreas an object then
an artist; this is shown through the way she dances. She is seen as an object
because of the way she dances on the floor with a sexy look to her, this is
because her clothes are tight which shows the audience her figure. The
movement fromLady Gaga is sexual; this is becauseher target audience is
older. The music video is upbeat, energetic; this is due to the song being fast.
Editing
The editing is done to go with the pace of the song, upbeat and fast. This also
shows Lady Gagas personality as it shows the audience that shelikes to sing
and dance to fast-pacemusic.

Costume: Within the music video Lady Gagas outfits change; the costumes
were modern and showy, which makes her stand out within her video.
Changing costumes throughoutthe music video is a convention within pop,
this is becausethe artist wants to look differentthroughoutthe video, and she
worecostumes which went with the song.
Lighting: in this music video the lighting was really dark and dull; however, the
spotlight was on her as she was the main focus. There was a ring of light

around her; this was to show the audience that sheis the main point in the
music video.
Props: within the music video props wereused to go with the lyrics of the
song, such as poker, poker tables were used, there were the playing of cards
and poker chips. There was a huge light behind Lady Gaga; this is to show that
she is the main star within the video. Within the genrepop, there are certain
themes used which fit in with the lyrics/song.
Setting: within this music video the setting is shown a lot, through the long
shots. The setting of this music video is at a mansion, this shows that Lady
Gaga is a wealthy lady. The setting fits in with the lyrics poker face as the
director took the exact meaning of the song title and instructed the artist and
the playing of poker.
