Some common writing mistakes Try to avoid the following .docxwhitneyleman54422
Some common writing mistakes
Try to avoid the following:
1.) Vague statements
Bad: “Bhutan faces a number of economic problems, but they are trying to fix them.”
Better: “According to the CIA World Factbook, the scarcity of modern infrastructure and technology has
limited economic growth in Bhutan. However, its government has invested heavily in hydropower plants in
order to export energy, and this has created new jobs and investment in the country recently.”
2.) Erroneous claims about causality
Bad: “Birth rates in Germany are lower than the world average, which means it has one of the world’s most
developed economies.”
Better: “Like most of the world’s wealthy countries, Germany has birthrates that are lower than the world
average.
3.) Non sequitur
Bad: “Cameroon has a high birthrate, but its climate varies significantly as one moves from one end of the
country to the other.”
Better: talk about separate issues separately, unless you have documented evidence that they are somehow
related
4.) Overgeneralizations
Bad: “Everyone in India is poor.”
Better: “According to the Population Reference Bureau, India’s gross national income per capita is $3840,
which is well below the world average of $11,690.”
5.) Redundancy
Bad: “A rapidly increasing population puts a strain on the Nigerian government’s ability to accommodate all
citizens. The Nigerian government therefore has a hard time providing adequate social services to its rapidly
growing population.”
Better: if you notice that you have two sentences back-to-back that say the same thing, just use one and cut the
other
6.) Over use of direct quoting
Bad: blocs of text are copied and pasted into your paper more than twice
Better: you paraphrase as much as possible, and limit your direct quoting to one or two pieces of text
7.) Irrational optimism:
Bad: “Chile produces some of the world’s best wine. Therefore, Chile is sure to become one of the world’s top
economies by 2015.”
Better: “Wine is one of Chile’s most significant industries, and will likely continue to generate income and
employment opportunities for the foreseeable future.”
8.) Unwarranted pessimism:
Bad: “Because of the violence in Egypt over the last few years, life for Egyptians will always be very difficult.”
Better: “Daily life for many Egyptians has been difficult over the last few years, as life an in country
undergoing a revolution would be. It is unclear at this point whether or not things will change for the better
or for the worse there.”

3. You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The table below shows the monthly expenditure of an average Australian family in 1991 and 2001.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
1991 2001
Australian Dollar Per Month
Food 155 160
Electricity and Water 75 120
Clothing 30 20
Housing 95 100
Transport 70 45
Other goods and services* 250 270
Total 675 715
*Other goods and services: non-essential goods and services
The table shows changes in the spending patterns of an average Australian household between 1999 and
2001. In general, Australian household spending was high in 2001 than in 1991 but the difference was not
significant (AUD $715 per month and AUD $675 per month respectively).
The amount of monthly spending on electricity and water saw a dramatic increase over the 10-year period
from $75 to $120. Yet in terms of the expenditure on non-essential goods and services, the rising trend
was less obvious with a minor increase of $20. At the same time, the amount of money spent on food and
housing rose only slightly from $155 to $160 and $95 to $100 respectively.
However, there was a decrease in expenditure on the other two items. Australians spent one third less on
clothing, which fell from $30 to $20. Similarly, expenditure on transport dropped from $70 in 1991 to
$45 in 2001.
It seems that food and “other goods and services” were the two biggest items of expenditure. Altogether,
they accounted for more than half of the total household spending. By comparison, Australians spent little
on dressing up. (188 words)
4. Write about the following topic:
Many newspapers and magazines feature stories about the private lives of famous people.
We know what they eat, where they buy their clothes and who they love. We also often see
pictures of them in private situations.
Is it appropriate for a magazine or newspaper to give this kind of private information
about people?
Give reasons for your answer.
Write at least 250 words.
model answer:
Generally, people read newspapers to find out about world current affairs and they read
magazines to be entertained. Therefore, one would expect to find articles that feature the private
lives of famous people in magazines rather than newspapers. However, nowadays, more and
more newspapers include stories like these which are neither informative nor useful.
In my opinion, this type of gossip about people's private lives should not be in newspapers for
several reasons. Firstly, for example, the fact that Princess Diana is going out with a sportsman is
not important news. Secondly, if newspapers want to publish articles about famous people they
should focus on their public events and achievements. In other words, if there is an article about
Princess Diana it should be about her works of charity, which will increase public awareness of
important problems. In addition, journalists should make sure that they write about the facts
only, not rumours. One should be able to rely on newspapers for the actual truth.
Magazines, on the other hand, focus on social news. But I feel it is more acceptable for them to
contain some features about famous personalities. In addition to being popular reading, these
stories often benefit the stars by giving free publicity to them, thereby helping their careers.
However, I also believe that magazine stories should not mention things that are too
embarrassing or untrue just to attract people to buy the magazine. Sensational stories, such as
these, cause great unhappiness to the people concerned.
In conclusion, I think newspapers should concentrate on real news but magazines can feature
some articles on people's private lives.

Nowadays many students have the opportunity to study for part or all of their courses in
foreign countries.
While studying abroad brings many benefits to individual students, it also has a number of
disadvantages.
Do you agree or disagree?
Write at least 250 words.
In recent years there has been a vast increase in the number of students choosing to study abroad.
This is partly because people are more affluent and partly due to the variety of grants and
scholarships which are available for overseas students nowadays. Although foreign study is not
something which every student would choose, it is an attractive option for many people.
Studying overseas has a number of advantages. Firstly/For example, it may give students

students may find a wider range of courses than those offered in their country’s universities, and

on the other hand, studying abroad has a number of drawbacks. These may be divided into
personal and professional. Firstly students have to leave their family and friends for a long
period. Furthermore/Moreover/What is more/Secondly studying abroad is almost
always more expensive that studying in one’s local university.
Finally/Furthermore/Moreover/What is more, students often have to study in a foreign
language, which may limit their performance and mean they do not attain their true level.
In my opinion/On the other hand, however, the disadvantages of studying abroad are
usually temporary in nature. Students who study abroad generally become proficient in the
language quite soon and they are only away from their family and friends for a year or two.
Furthermore/What is more, many of the benefits last students all their lives and make them
highly desirable to prospective employers.
