• Africa, second largest of Earth’s
seven continents, covering 23
percent of the world’s total land

straddles the equator and most of
its area lies within the tropics.

on the west, the Indian Ocean and
Red Sea on the east, and the

Here, early humans evolved from apes
between 8 million and 5 million years ago.
