Slides from my presentation delivered at the Brighton Content Strategy Meetup on 24th April 2012.
In it, I discuss how Content Strategy needs to adapt to online communities becoming more and more important to businesses and individuals...
1. The document discusses the 3 Rules of Epidemics: The Law of the Few, The Stickiness Factor, and The Power of Context.
2. The Law of the Few states that the success of any social epidemic depends heavily on a small number of influential people known as Connectors, Mavens, and Salespeople.
3. It also discusses how the context of ideas and behaviors spreading through mobile devices versus desktop computers can impact their transmission and engagement.
Top 25 Social Media Platforms to Use in Church and MinistryBruce Reyes-Chow
This document discusses using social media for ministry and church purposes. It provides an overview of popular social media platforms and potential uses for each one, including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google Calendar, Dropbox, and others. It emphasizes that social media is just another form of communication and that the posture of ministry, such as being interactive and engaging with others, is more important than technical mastery of the platforms. The document also outlines best practices for using social media, including being present where people already engage online and maintaining a consistent persona.
The document discusses the use of various social media platforms for promoting and documenting a flash mob event called #ChalkAboutIt. It found that Twitter and Facebook were most effective for spreading information, while platforms like Pinterest, Foursquare, and Doodle.ly had limited reach. It also noted that planning earlier and focusing content on 1-2 major channels could have improved engagement. Overall, the event was a learning experience about how to better integrate social media for a spontaneous live event.
Google+ is Google's attempt to compete with Facebook and Twitter in the social media space. It features a stream of user activity, the ability to share content within circles of contacts, and interactive photo sharing. Perhaps its most popular feature is group video chatting through hangouts. As of February 2012, Google+ had around 100 million users, and was projected to reach 400 million by the end of the year. Users are encouraged to utilize circles to share content selectively and engage with others through recommendations and discussions. Nonprofit organizations also have a presence on Google+ to promote their causes.
INNOVATION: Being a journalist in the 2010sKrisMcDonald21
The document discusses the skills needed to be a journalist in the 2010s. It emphasizes the importance of digital storytelling using multimedia, building communities through social media, and innovating to find new ways to engage audiences and share news. Journalists now need to act as conversation facilitators, community builders, and data gatherers in addition to their traditional storytelling role. The document encourages journalists to experiment with new tools and networks to stay relevant, but also maintain their core skills and purpose of communicating information to audiences.
Week 10 the rise of the rest-google +, tumblrrskslides
Google+ allows journalists to link their profiles to get photo bylines on stories in search results, connecting readers to them. It also features Google Hangouts for video chats and live broadcasts, enabling engagement through interviews and question/answer sessions with readers. Tumblr is a platform well-suited for media like NPR to curate engaging content through reblogs and promote shows, while also expressing personality through blogs on topics of interest. It can complement traditional coverage by sharing others' content and building identity.
This webinar provided 10 tips for using social media successfully: 1) focus on your website as the hub; 2) use OASIS planning; 3) tell good stories; 4) view it as a conversation; 5) optimize for mobile; 6) choose the right media; 7) be curious on Twitter; 8) keep it real-life; 9) post at optimal times; and 10) monitor and evaluate. The webinar emphasized being authentic, engaging in conversations, and using social media to collaborate and build communities rather than just promote an organization.

The best online communities provide the best experiences for their members by creating content worth talking about. Here are some case studies, tips, and next steps for progressive organizations exploring the online community space.
The document discusses how to build communities using content. It outlines that communities today are about conversations rather than one-way information delivery. It then discusses the role of community managers in planning and curating content to connect people and engage the community. Content is described as the key to making a community findable, shareable, searchable, and worth discussing. The document provides tips for community managers, such as developing an understanding of the community and connecting people directly.
Social media strategy involves targeting engaged audiences through quality, authentic content. It requires understanding who you want to reach, when to reach them, and who they may further spread your message to. The best platforms depend on your goals and audience. Social media can complement offline efforts like town halls, press events, and advocacy pushes. Emerging trends include mobile growth, expert curation, embedded actions, and game-like elements.

The overall message is that social media requires dedicated time and resources to use it successfully for organizations.
Curated content involves finding relevant content created by others and sharing it with your own audience in an organized way. This benefits content strategies in several ways: it provides timely content more quickly than creating all new content; it allows experts in other fields to share developments saving time and money; and positioning yourself as a tastemaker bringing the best content together. When curating, quality is key - only share the most informative content and be sure to properly attribute sources. Curated content is also useful for measuring what types of content resonate best with your audience.

New Media Communication: Using Word of Mouth Marketing OnlineJohn Paul Richards
This is the video we created as a team within the Full Sail University's IMBD program. I personally created the YouTube slides but had great team work to put the presentation together.
How content marketing ruined content marketing (And what you can do to fix it)Omobono
Content marketing is over.
Or at least content marketing as we know it. Worn out. Used up. Over.
Don’t blame the audience for this, blame yourself; blame marketers. Blame marketing.
We did this to ourselves when we learned about content marketing – like a favourite old toy, a trusty pair of shoes; we latched on, we overdid it and this is why we can’t have nice things.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

LF Energy Webinar: Electrical Grid Modelling and Simulation Through PowSyBl -...DanBrown980551
Do you want to learn how to model and simulate an electrical network from scratch in under an hour?
Then welcome to this PowSyBl workshop, hosted by Rte, the French Transmission System Operator (TSO)!
During the webinar, you will discover the PowSyBl ecosystem as well as handle and study an electrical network through an interactive Python notebook.
PowSyBl is an open source project hosted by LF Energy, which offers a comprehensive set of features for electrical grid modelling and simulation. Among other advanced features, PowSyBl provides:
- A fully editable and extendable library for grid component modelling;
- Visualization tools to display your network;
- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.
What you will learn during the webinar:
- For beginners: discover PowSyBl's functionalities through a quick general presentation and the notebook, without needing any expert coding skills;
- For advanced developers: master the skills to efficiently apply PowSyBl functionalities to your real-world scenarios.
7. The worst thing a content manager
can say to a community manager is…
“Hey, would you mind posting a link
to that thing we just published on the
community?”
A good community manager will
always answer “Why?”
@BenjMartin
8. Have idea
for content
Create
content Although this model
has good intentions,
Publish it is ultimately
It on ineffective…
community
Get traffic
and
@BenjMartin conversation
9. With the existence of the community,
content strategy can now afford to (and
should) become more agile…
“You can have content without
community and you can have a
community without content but – and
here’s the fun part- if you have a
thriving community the community
BECOMES the content.”
Source: Darika Ahrens (Forrester, formerly Tempero)

@BenjMartin
10. That’s not to say you should just create
content to pander to the community
The community itself is varied, so no
content will ever fully resonate
However, the make-up of the community
can provide guidance as to what
content is the most suitable
@BenjMartin
11. Community Managers and Content
Strategists are frequently guilty of
assuming people knowledgeable as they
are about the subject…
@BenjMartin
12. If you want to effectively leverage a
community for your content, a good (but
vague) rule of thumb is…
Create BROAD-LEVEL content for
traffic and conversation
(it is better to patronise few and inform many than vice versa)
Create HIGH-LEVEL content for
niche audience acquisition and
brand advocacy
(but its still important to appeal to those few who know a bit more)
@BenjMartin
13. “But what content works well on Facebook / Twitter /
Google+ / blah / blah / blah?”
Well, it depends on the subject matter, really, but
here’s a (really) rough guide…
Facebook: Stuff related to Facebook (however
loosely), Photos, Videos (from YouTube), “Top
3/5/10” posts, Polls
Twitter: Stuff related to Twitter (however loosely),
Photos, “Top 3/5/10” posts, grabbing headlines
Google+: Videos and Links (but it’s still kinda too
early to tell)
@BenjMartin
14. HOWEVER, community managers need to remember
that while it’s up to the content makers to create
stuff that it is suitable…
It’s up to you to tell them what actually is suitable
It’s up to you to frame it in properly
It’s up to you to keep the conversation going
It’s up to you to report back on your findings
@BenjMartin
15. As engagement is slowly (but thankfully) becoming
more important than size, and their numbers more
visible, Community Managers have become more at
the mercy of Content Strategists to create decent,
worthwhile content.
This symbiotic need for each other’s expertise has
thus restored “balance to the force”.
@BenjMartin
