A thesis statement is merely the main topic of the essay and the author’s opinion or position on that topic. Throughout your essay you set out to prove that opinion. An example from Week 3’s info: ‘Genghis Khan is not a leader who practiced true genocide.’ OR ‘Genghis Khan is an excellent example of a leader who practiced genocide.’ Three Points You must have three main points to prove your thesis. These are also known as the topic sentence on the template you will use. For the thesis – ‘Genghis Khan did not practice true genocide,’ one of your main points could be: 1) He killed everyone, everywhere and did not seem to discriminate. Three Points X 3 Pieces of Evidence With each of your three main points, you must back them up with three additional reason/detail/facts to support that main point. Confusing? Let me help. For example: The main point – ‘He killed everyone, everywhere and did not seem to discriminate,’ could then be backed up be three specific instances in which this was true. Help is Here!
