MEANING
OF
GLOBALIZATION
Let’s define GLOBALIZATION
 It was derived from the word ‘globalize’ which
refers to the rise of global networks of economic
system.
 It is a term used to describe the changes in
societies and the world economy that are the result
of dramatically increased trade and cultural
exchange
 In specifically economic contexts, it refers almost
exclusively to the effects of trade, particularly trade
liberalization or free trade.
Let’s define GLOBALIZATION
 -Globalization made visible the intentions of the
world’s future.
 -Globalization further brought a reality that
differed traditionalism from modernism.
 -Globalization was always about innovation. It is
an innovation to lift man beyond the limits of
the known and traverse to unveil the knowledge
from the unknown.
GLOBALIZATION
Reasons for globalization
1.Modernization
2.Technological advancement
3.Innovation of human knowledge
Effect of globalization on Ethical
dispositions
- demise of some values
- switchy attitudes
- new forms of expressions that
challenges the traditional values.
According to sociologist
Anthony Giddens
‘globalization’ is the
intensification of worldwide
social relations which link
distant localities in such a
way that local happenings
are shaped by events
occurring many miles
away and vice versa.
Four (4) Forms of Globalization
1. Embodied Globalization- refers to the movement or migration of
people.
2. Agency-Extended Globalization- deals with the dispersion and
exchange of agents or representatives of various institutions, politics and
organizations.
3. Object-Extended Globalization- involves the mobility of goods,
commodities, and other objects of exchange such as machinery, money,
and food items.
4. Disembodied Globalization- covers the diffusion of ideas, knowledge
and information such Confucian philosophy and good study habits across
the world.
Dimensions of
Globalization
 refers primarily to international business which
covers all contracts and negotiations.
 It involves economic resources, including human
power and capital.
Economic Globalization
World Trade Organization (WTO)
• It oversees global trade rules among nations. The main focus of the WTO is to provide
open lines of communication concerning trade among its members.
European Union (EU)
Through globalization, EU firms receive easier access to new and expanding
markets and sources of finance and technology. EU consumers have access to
a larger variety of goods at lower prices. And there are potential significant
gains for the EU including higher levels of productivity and real wages.
Globalization is largely about the free movement of people, capital and goods.
• North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA)
• The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was implemented in 1994 to
encourage trade between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. NAFTA reduced or eliminated
tariffs on imports and exports between the three participating countries, creating a
hugefree-tradezone.
• Asean –China Free Trade Area ( ACFTA)
• 2002, China and ASEAN Countries signed the Framework Agreement on
Comprehensive Economic Cooperation which formed the legal basis for the creation of
the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area (ACFTA). Under ACFTA are three agreements
aiming for free flow of goods, services, and investments.
Two components:
a.) Cultural Globalization- the spread of ideas, values,
and meanings across countries.
b.) Social Globalization- covers the diffusion of beliefs,
practices, and issues concerning population growth,
media urbanization, tourism and education.
Sociocultural Globalization
-this involves institutions, public
policies, and practices that cut across
national borders to facilitate
international agreements and
transactions.
Political Globalization
International Court Of Justice (ICJ)
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial
organ of the UN. The Court has two functions: To settle, in
accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted
by States, and. To give advisory opinions on legal questions
referred to it by authorized UN organs and specialized
agencies.
Political Globalization
International Criminal Court (ICC)
The ICC is a permanent international court established to
investigate, prosecute and try individuals accused of
committing the most serious crimes of concern to the
international community as a whole: the crime of genocide,
crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of
aggression.
Political Globalization
World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)
This is an international non-governmental organization
founded in 1961 that works in the field of wilderness
preservation and the reduction of human impact on the
environment. It was formerly named the World Wildlife
Fund, which remains its official name in Canada and the
United States.
