Construction of our products involved filming in a photography studio to create backdrops for videos. Filming lights were initially used but cast unwanted shadows, so alternative lighting methods were explored. Photographs for packaging were taken and effects like smoothing applied in Photoshop to remove details. Feedback on early cuts was gathered through an online survey shared on social media. An interactive website with pages for galleries, forums, and an online store was built easily using the Wix website builder. Products were screened for an audience alongside classmates' work to gauge reactions.

This paper presents a case study of a successful instance of peer learning in the context of the co-curricular development programme of Sheffield Engineering Leadership Academy (SELA). It focuses, in particular, on the Skills Bootcamp, which forms the annual induction for new members to the programme. The learning activities and experiences at this event are designed and delivered by students in their final year of SELA, who teach incoming students based on their own learning and experience. Many of the activities also involve the incoming cohort learning collaboratively together. We examine the multiple levels of peer learning and teaching that this creates, and consider them in light of the literature on peer learning and teaching, where both positive and negative experiences are reported. The value of this peer learning experience to building a foundation for the SELA programme, and creating and maintaining a community of learning and professional practice are also discussed.

In this presentation, I discuss the topics I covered during my PhD:
Dependency measures between variables are fundamental for a number of important applications in machine learning. They are ubiquitously used: for feature selection, as splitting criteria in random forest, for clustering comparison and validation, to infer biological networks, to list a few. Nonetheless there exist a number of problems when dependencies are estimated on finite data: detection, quantification, and ranking of dependencies are challenging.
This thesis proposes a series of contributions to improve performances on each of the 3 goals above. During the seminar I will demonstrate that:
- Adjusted measures can improve on the tasks of quantification and ranking. In particular, I will discuss some adjustments applied to the Maximal Information Coefficient (MIC), random forests, and clustering comparisons;
- A measure based on mutual information and randomisation we designed is competitive on the tasks of detection and ranking of relationships. We named this measure the Randomised Information Coefficient (RIC) and tested it on the applications of biological network inference and multi-variable feature selection.
