The Puppet Labs support team needs a way to rapidly reproduce customer issues across a wide range of operating systems and various versions of Puppet Enterprise. Oscar is a set of Vagrant plugins that handles machine provisioning and configuration to install Puppet Enterprise. It's designed to make building a Puppet Enterprise as simple as running `vagrant up`. While Oscar was originally built for supporting Puppet Enterprise, it provides a general platform for developing and testing against Puppet Enterprise. This talk will go over the history of Oscar, the current state, how it's used, and where to get it.
Speaker Bio: Adrien Thebo has been in the Operations/Software development field since 2005, starting at small IT shop in Boise, Idaho. He started at Puppet Labs in 2011 on the Operations team, and used Puppet to run the Puppet Labs infrastructure. This talk explains the installation and configuration of a Linux high availability network gateway using keepalived and conntrackd. This results in an active-standby topology. Necessary scripts are implemented to keep the configuration in sync of both gateways. Keepalived is used to manage active-standby negotiation. Conntrackd is used to synchronize network states across the gateways.

Our challenge is to also deliver this platform to the enterprise as a manageable set of systems. This presentation describes how illumos technologies enable us to manage both SaaS and enterprise deployments with ease.
These tools relate to automating application deployment and configuration management. Capistrano was an early tool for automating application deployment through Ruby scripts without needing scripts on production servers. Puppet and Chef are tools for configuration management that define server configurations in code and work to ensure servers match those definitions. Puppet uses a declarative domain-specific language while Chef uses extended Ruby scripts. Both aim to provide repeatable, consistent server configurations across environments.
