technologies and one of them is education field. This report will present a
comprehensive proposal of an exhibition which aims at displaying mobile
technology and cutting-edge technologies and encouraging schools to apply
them in order to improve education quality. It will be introduced as follows.
i. The format of the exhibition room and functions of each area will be
comprehensively described. Mobile technology and cutting-edge
technologies showed in the exhibition areas will be introduced, including
iCloud, Win 8, RFID, mobile POS Machine, Google Glass, App, QR Code,
smart board, face recognition system, Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft
Surface and Windows Surface Pro.
ii. Five tools based on Web 2.0 namely Facebook, Twitter, Google AdWords,
Tubemogul PlayTime Platform and Kwik Surveys will be adopted in order
to promote the exhibition widely and collect feedback from all the
participants. Scratchpads will be provided to all the audiences as gifts and
this is also one kind of promotion.

2.1-Three screens for publicity
i. Every area has three or four volunteers. First of all, every guest will be
given a corresponding ID number and receive a paper survey at the
reception desk after him entering the exhibition. Then they will be guided to
publicity area, which is decorated by three screens hanging from the
ceiling and a small auditorium. The three screens and the auditorium are
arc-shaped designed.
The first screen will introduce the logo and slogan. Here is the logo:

presents like a mountain. The rainbow on the mountain represents Wi-Fi in
our daily life. Using rainbow here means that Wi-Fi can make people’s life
more colorful. And the slogan is better mobile, better education.
ii. The second screen will introduce the show guide of the exhibition. Visitors
will be firstly guided to publicity area. Then along footprints on the floor,
they will arrive at display area, which is on the second floor. Display area is
mainly for watching and the following areas are mainly for experiencing.
After visitors going downstairs, they can choose to go to experience area,
cutting-edge experience area or retiring area. These areas will be
introduced in detail in the following part. Finally, there will be volunteers
and a submission case at the gate. Visitor who finishes his survey will get a
gift from volunteers.
iii. The third screen will introduce two prototypical exemplars of mobile
technology and cutting edge technology: iCloud and Windows 8.
2.2- ICloud
Graph 3: ICloud working pattern
ICloud is an IT service provided by Apple. It allows users to store 5GB
information in the servers free of charge. In the following part, its functions will
be introduced in detail.
2.2.1-iOS device backup and restore

Settings and data, such as photos, app data, messages, ringtones, etc. can be
backed up and restored on a device running iOS 5 via iCloud. Backups can be
linked to Wi-Fi when the device is locked. Users can store anything which can
be appeared in the form of files in the cloud-based system and be provided
with a platform for email and calendars. ICloud, which is implemented by the
third-party, is available in apps through the iCloud API (Apple, 2011).
2.2.2-Applied in university
Users can redact the same document on different devices via iCloud. The
document can be synchronized with ICloud automatically if user establishes a
document on iPhone. This function can not only be available on iOS devices,
but also on other Apple devices. Therefore, student can modify his essay or
assignment whenever and wherever he wants. In addition, to avoid
coursework lost before deadline because of device broken, the documents can
be backed up on iCloud and be edited on another device.
2.3-Windows 8
Everyone is familiar with Windows operating system, which is released by
Microsoft Corporation. Windows 8 is the newest one launched on August 1,
2012 and be available for extensive users on October 26, 2012 (Morris, 2012).
It is the default operating system for personal computers, Microsoft Surface
and home theater PCs. Microsoft Surface, which will be introduced in the
cutting edge area in detail, is a new product introduced by Microsoft.

2.3.1-New and changed features
i. Windows Explorer
Currently, Windows Explorer is called File Explorer, which has a ribbon instead
of command bar (Iam, 2012). More detailed statistics has been provided by file
operation dialogs as well as pausing file transmission and improvements in
managing conflicts while copying files. A new function, "File History" has added
to Windows Explorer. A secondary storage device can back up and restore
enhancive revisions of files (Anthony, 2012).
ii. Skydrive
Windows 8 online services and functionality are almost the same as iCloud.
Each user can now register a Microsoft account, i.e. Windows Live ID, and log
in to synchronize and backup applications and settings (Neil, 2012). A cloud
server called Microsoft’s SkyDrive, is providing storage service just like iCloud.
iii. Windows Store

Graph 5: A music app for Windows 8
Windows Store apps is a new online store provided by Microsoft. According to
Microsoft developer Jensen Harris, the store is mainly for touch screen
environments and far different from desktop applications. There are varies of
categories in apps, such as People app for social networks and Photos app for
aggregating photos.
2.3.2-Applied in university
Windows 8 now can be installed in university computers or on Microsoft Ships
SUR40 40 Inch Surface Table. Surface Table is a cutting-edge technology,
which will be introduced in the cutting-edge area. The high-tech and
high-efficient features can provide students with better operating interface

Graph 6: Display area (upstairs)
This area is mainly for watching. Three products will be displayed in three
showcases. Two volunteers will be ready to help everyone to understand these
products in-depth. The first product is RFID.
3.1-RFID
RFID, which is short for Radio-frequency identification, is a wireless
communications technology. It can transfer data from a tag attached to an
object by using radio-frequency electromagnetic fields, for the purpose of
automatic identification and tracking.
Graph 7: RFID used in parking lot
3.1.1-Application
An RFID attached to goods can be used for tracking and supervising inventory,
asset and staff. For example, an RFID can be attached to automobiles, books
and computer equipments. The RFID is widely used in extensive application
fields, in which the device is dominated by its economic benefit of
corresponding areas, such as:
i. Anti-counterfeiting of money and products
ii. Electronic toll collection systems
Group	Leader:	SHI_	Duanrui_6509092

12

iii. Toll collection and contactless payment (Magrassi, 2001)
iv. Machine readable travel documents
v. logistics management
3.1.2- Applied in university
i. Ongoing Time-office management: Card which is attached with RFID
readers can register the regular attendance of each student and then the
software system will send the message of arrival to terminal automatically.
The attendance book will be sent to the designated class-tutor as well. The
annual attendance report will be stored in the system.
ii. Library Management: The same card can be used in the library for
borrowing and returning books and can be linked to printers after valid
setting.
iii. Renewal and database updating: Every year, when students progress to a
higher grade, school will update the system to transmit the newest
transcripts to respective parents (rfid-in-school, n.d.).
3.2-Mobile POS machine
Graph 8: Mobile POS Machine
Mobile POS machine is a kind of RF-SIM terminal reader. Reader terminal
makes connection with data server through the CDMA, GPRS, TCP/IP, etc.
Users need to swipe RF-SIM card, which is equipped in smartphone, on
mobile POS machine, and input relevant information (Charny, 2002).
Group	Leader:	SHI_	Duanrui_6509092

13

3.2.1-Applied in university
i. For students: it can be applied in library for finding books, which can bring
a lot of convenience to students. This application has another production
called thick wide book collector. Students can find out the detailed
information, e.g. the time when the book has been borrowed. It has high
application adaptability, which can support multiple file formats like DBF,
TXT, EXCEL, and MARK.
ii. For staff: it is small in size and its ultra wide screen has humanized graphic
interface and accord with human body engineering shape design and
greatly improved the staff in the process of using in comfort.
3.3-Google glass
Graph 9: Google glass
Google glass is a new kind of production which is published in Google I/O
meeting in April, 2012. It’s a Head-mounted display, which is used for
augmenting reality. This glass equipped with android system is expected to
displace smartphones. Because there’s no product in circulate in market, this
product will be showed in the form of poster.
3.3.1-Applied in university
Although the glass is small and light, a battery is set in the frame of the glass.
There is also a screen on the right side. Therefore, it can be used to send
message, search maps and listen to music, etc. The speech recognition
makes every voice command come true. The system can be controlled to take

a photo if it is told to do so (David, 2012). Hence, university students can take
photos of the PPT slides in the lecture or seminar or even can download the
material to their glass’s database just by voice command. In this way, students
can read larger screen of image anywhere instead of being restricted to a
laptop screen.
4. Experience area
Graph 10: Experience area (blue area)
In this section, a nearly real classroom is made as an experience area where
participants can have a veritable access to application services and advanced
devices. There will be a smart board in front of the classroom and 12 desks,
each of which is equipped with an iPad4. In addition, six face recognition
systems is put on each two desks. At least 36 people can participant in this
activity simultaneously. More details concerning these apps and devices will be
talked about in the following parts. Firstly, there are numerous useful
application services which can be applied in the process of teaching and
learning.
4.1-Useful application services
4.1.1-The official university App
This app can help students and staff to find all the things they need for their
campus life, finding actual places, searching resources in library, tracking their

15

friends, getting exam results and ordering labs. New information is updated
continuously in this app (Bra.Ac.Uk, 2004).
4.1.2-Blackboard Mobile™ Learn
Graph 11: Blackboard Mobile™ Learn
Blackboard learning system can be accessed not only by using computers but
also by using this app in mobile phones. All the learning materials are available
in an engaging and intuitive way on mobile devices (Bra.Ac.Uk, 2004).
4.1.3-Evernote
Graph 12: Evernote
It is a practical and frequently used app which can help students and teachers
stay efficient and well-organized because of its function of taking photos,
recording voice and creating to-do lists. Another advantage of this app is that it
provides every user upload of 5G materials in the cloud, so that users can view
their materials on any mobile devices (Bra.Ac.Uk, 2004).
4.1.4-Cam scanner
Group	Leader:	SHI_	Duanrui_6509092

16

Graph 13: Cam scanner
By using this app, scanning can be accomplished anytime and anywhere.
Teachers and students do not need to find scanner. Paper documents,
receipts, notes, invoices, whiteboard discussions. These all can be scanned
and processed by this app automatically. It cannot only scan but also have
enhanced function of multiple edits which can make images clearer and more
readable (Bra.Ac.Uk, 2004).
4.1.5-Keynote
Graph 14: Keynote
It is the most useful app for presentation which students and teacher perform
every day. All the apple products, can install it which can show animated
transitions and charts just by touching and tapping and create a remarkable
presentation.3Dbar, area, line, and pie charts can highlight your data animated
with new 3D chart builds such as Rotate, Grow, Crane and Radial. Besides, by
using video mirroring, slides can also be displayed through HDTV, and the
function of Presenter Display can realize the preview of notes and slides.
Keynotes can also work with icloud so slides can be stored, downloaded and
updated ted through any mobile devices (Bra.Ac.Uk, 2004).
4.2-Moodle
Moodle is short for Modular Object- Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment.
It is a software package for producing internet-based and web sites, which is
Group	Leader:	SHI_	Duanrui_6509092

17

designed for supporting a social constructions framework of education (Moodle,
2012). Moodle is mostly useful for universities, schools and government
departments. In university, tutors can upload teaching materials to Moodle and
students can download materials they want from Moodle after them logging in.
Additionally, students can ask questions on Moodle if the platform is designed
as a forum included. Quizzer will get the answer when tutors and other
students see the question. In general, Moodle is an amazing tool for tutors and
students to communicate with each other.
All these apps will be installed in iPads on the tables for participants to have a
practical experience. However, the amount of iPads is limited after all so for
those people who cannot access iPads, QR codes for downloading these apps
are posted on the table. In this way, the only thing participants need to do is to
use their personal mobile phone to scan the QR codes and apps will be
downloaded.
4.3-QR codes
Graph 15: QR code
QR code which stands for Quick Response code was initially invented to use in
industries. But because of its fast readability and large storage capacity, it
becomes more and more popular in other fields. Black modules (square dots)
arranged in a square pattern make up the QR code on a white background
(Qrcode, 2000). It is now used over a much wider range of applications,
Group	Leader:	SHI_	Duanrui_6509092

18

including commercial tracking, entertainment and transport ticketing,
product/loyalty marketing (Shop2mobi, 2009). For example, when a
supermarket has some products in discount, customers can use a QR code
decoder which is a mobile app to capture the discount (Newman, 2011).
What’s more, a company's information such as address and relevant
information alongside its alpha-numeric text data can be stored as the form QR
code and information can be got in a second (Brititsh Standards, 2009). Apps
for scanning QR Codes can be found on nearly all smartphone devices. QR
Codes can be used in Google's mobile Android operating system using Google
Goggles and also IOS devices iPhone, iPod, iPad via barcode scanners from
3rd party. The new iPhone 5 has QR code folders to manage your QR codes.
Symbian operating system in Nokia also has the feature of a barcode scanner
which can read QR Codes. QR codes can also be of great benefit in education.
For instance, teachers can store their additional sources mentioned in a
lecture in the form of QR code so students do not need to write down the
website link or try to find the sources themselves and the only thing then need
to do is scan the QR code. All the learning materials can be viewed or
downloaded very quickly, which can improve learning efficiency. Students and
teachers can also save their personal information in QR code. If a student
wants to know a teacher’s office hour and office location, he can just scan QR
codes. Meanwhile, students themselves can scan each other’s QR code if they
meet at the first time as a study group to exchange contact information.
Consequently, QR code is not only useful in marketplace or industry; it can
also be of great value for education.
4.4- Smart board
Secondly, there is a smart board hanging in front of the classroom. Touch
detection is used by this interactive to detect users’ input for example double
quick clicks, scrolling, expanding images, just the same operating method as
Group	Leader:	SHI_	Duanrui_6509092

19

normal personal computer input devices (Baburajan, 2009). This smart board
can also serve as a larch touch screen to display a computer’s video output
assisted by a projector. Classically, each board is equipped by four pens using
digital ink which avoid the waste of whiteboard markers. Furthermore, many
kinds of media such as images, video and notes can be compiled into virtual
notebook merely by operating on the smart board when smart Notebook
software is included (Smarttech, 2010). Another advantage of Smart Notebook
software is that it can record every movement done by teachers on the board
so that students can review what teachers said in class and go over the
content again and again until they exactly understand. According to Eilola
(2005), the smart board is thought to be an intelligent whiteboard surface and
also a special space for collaboration supported by computer. He also takes
the view that students can really engage themselves in such information
spaces instead of simply gazing at them. He explains how the Smart Board
interactive whiteboard system offers an information space that allows his
students to engage in active collaboration. He claims that there are three
distinct functions of the smart board that benefit u users. Firstly, large amounts
of information can be provided by the smart board. Secondly, active
collaboration is invited by the information space. Lastly, contingent and
dynamic work can be produced.
4.5- Face recognition system
Thirdly, taking communication between 10 campuses into consideration, a face
recognition system with a camera is put on each desk. Nowadays, the
technology of face recognition is widely used in various different fields. It is
useful to the management or security for companies to check on work
attendance or for private houses to prevent thieves (Crawford, 2011). In terms
of criminal investigation, face recognition together with internet can quickly
search and track down offenders on a gigantic scale. Furthermore, face
recognition can also confirm personal information security when people
Group	Leader:	SHI_	Duanrui_6509092

20

conduct e-commerce by identifying biologically facial characteristics (Krause,
2002). In the field of education, it is also very useful. Firstly, it can confirm
students’ attendance in which way students cannot let others help them sign in
so they can no longer escape from absence from classes. Secondly, when in
class, students’ expressions on their faces can be captured with the help of the
smart and advanced face recognition software in the system. So if students
begin to yawn and feel boring, the system can give a respond to teachers to
make a joke or say something interesting. Thirdly, it can also prevent students
from cheating in the exams and acts as a supervisor. Meanwhile, the camera
can realize the video meeting or communication by internet.
5. Cutting edge technology experience area
Graph 16: Cutting-edge experience area (yellow area)
Another part of the exhibition is cutting edge technology experience area. In
this part, people can use cutting edge productions by themselves then know
more about these advance productions. There will be three “Samsung SUR40
for Microsoft Surface” set in the experience area. People in this area can put
their mobile phones or other kinds of things on this table and experience the
amazing performance. To make people experience more, three windows
surface pros will be set on each smart table. This surface system is brought
out by Microsoft and launched windows 8 system.
Group	Leader:	SHI_	Duanrui_6509092

21

5.1-Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface
One of these products set in this area is a special table named ‘Samsung
SUR40 for Microsoft Surface’. In 2011, Microsoft cooperated with Samsung
and launched this new production. So the hardware of this Microsoft system
production is made by Samsung. Its 1080p LCD touchscreen which runs
surface 2.0 can provide consumer best visual feeling (Techblog, 2012).
Because of its thickness is thin, this surface not only can be used as a table
but also can be fixed on wall or implanted in furniture. People can use it
reading articles, browsing pictures, listening to the music, playing games and
many extra functions that ordinal computers cannot achieve. For example,
their Multi-touch screens can response 52 points at the same time. Moreover,
with the Pixel Sense technology attached in the table, this touch screen can
distinguish things on it and quickly deal with or explain them. It means if you
put a cup of juice on this table, the surface can identify the type of the juice.
This special surface also can read bar code. When you put a production with
code on the table, the system will tell you all the information about the good. It
is truly a useful smart table which is used in some high-level companies. For
example AT&T, a telecommunication company in America, decide to put this
table in all of its branches. When consumers put their mobile phones on the
table, the surface will tell them the basic information about their mobile phone
account, such as bills and privileges. People also can put pictures, music or
other data into the mobile equipment like phones, cameras and pads by
fingers sliding. In this way, this smart table can be used in teaching. Tutors can
upload materials used in class in the table. Then, students can put their smart
phone or pads on this surface and download these materials. This new
equipment makes the process of teaching conveniently.

5.2- Windows 8 in Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface
As the introduction in the previous publicity area, Windows 8 is a progressive
system which development in present year. Compared with other similar pads,
this one has many advantages. For example, the window surface pro installs a
set of Microsoft office (Engadget, 2008). So it not only just used for
entertainment, but also can handle office business. People can experience this
windows surface or connect this surface with the smart table to experience the
novelty from cutting edge production.

detail about their functions, advantages and methods to achieve the aims.
Some small gifts will be given to participants to promote the exhibition in
another way and this will be explained after five tools.
7.2- Illustrations of Five Tools
7.2.1-Facebook and Twitter
Facebook and Twitter are two of the most popular worldwide social networking
websites with more than 900 million and 550 million participants (Dugan, 2012).
The enormous number of users brings more possibility and convenience for
contacting people and drawing people’s attention from the five countries where
different campuses are located through online platforms. Firstly, new accounts
will be registered and home pages will be created to help promoting the
exhibition. Then, the information of the exhibition such as lasting time and
venue will be uploaded. Furthermore, the technologies displayed in the
exhibition will also be showed generally in form of texts and images, which do
not only make the concept of the exhibition clearer but make further promotion
easier as well. Two experience areas will be introduced particularly in order to
attract more interest from people. Other information about the exhibition
outside Facebook and Twitter will also be uploaded in form of links and short
explanations. Besides uploading information, interaction will also be created
on Facebook and Twitter between staff and audiences and feedback can be
collected. Immediate feedback can help improving the exhibition services or
re-promote the exhibition. Based on viral marketing mode in Facebook and
Twitter, the advertisement can be spread rapidly and widely.

7.2.2- Google AdWords
Google search is one of the most popular search engines worldwide and its
market share in US reached over 66 percent (Goodwin, 2012), which proves
that Google search’s advantage is obvious compared with other search
engines and advertising on Google can gain more attention. Google AdWords
is Google’s notable product which focuses on providing efficient advertising
service with rational price. An advertisement of the exhibition will be made and
some keywords will be set at first, and then Google AdWords will show the
advertisement above or next to the search result when people’s search match
Group	Leader:	SHI_	Duanrui_6509092

the keywords, when people search or browse on the mobile phones they can
also see this advertisement. In order to promote this exhibition, mobile
technology and cutting-edge technology can be defined as keywords as they
are the contents of this exhibition. People who are interested in mobile
technologies and cutting-edge technologies can see the advertisement of this
exhibition through Google AdWords. In the budget aspect, Google AdWords
differs from traditional advertising in payment as its standard pricing model
depends on a cost-per-click (CPC) based auction, which means that the
advertisement only need to be paid when someone clicks on it. Daily budget is
also decided by advertiser and can be changed at any time. Furthermore,
Different kinds of advertisement can be created, including text advertising,
image advertising and video advertising. Using Google AdWords can promote
the exhibition in wide range and give potential audiences a general concept of
this exhibition.
7.2.3-Tubemogul PlayTime Platform
Tubemogul is a famous video marketing company and is the first one built for
branding in this field. PlayTime Platform is Tubemogul’s core product which
integrates real-time video purchasing, advertisement service, targeting most
engaged audiences and brand measurement (Emeryville, 2012). Differ from
Google AdWords, Tubemogul PlayTime is expert in the media field and can
provide more specific service about video advertising. The most significant
reason for choosing Tubemogul PlayTime to promote the exhibition is that it
can put advertisements on its partner’s websites. People can see the
advertisement while browsing other websites, and this result in some people
who ignore information on Facebook and Twitter and do not search the defined
keywords on Google become the exhibition’s potential audiences. Tubemogul
PlayTime can simplify the process of purchasing video advertising and setting
up video campaigns. In addition, a wide variety of advertising formats can be
chosen, such as pre-roll advertising which is a short video in front of significant
contents on media websites and in-display advertising which is part of the

27

content on websites. Tubemogul PlayTime also relays its standard pricing
model on cost-per-view (CPV) or cost-per-completion (CPCom) based auction
so that the budget can be saved and used more accurately. Tubemogul
PlayTime can provide attractive visual advertisement and quality service.
Graph 23: Pre-roll advertisement
7.2.4-Kwik Surveys
Kwik Surveys is one of the largest online survey tools and it is totally free for all
users to create surveys with unlimited numbers of questions and answers.
Different forms of questions can be chosen and the survey page can be
formatted with a variety of themes to decorate the survey. Furthermore, the
survey results are easy to view and Kwik Surveys will help creating reports of

28

results and reports can be simply downloaded (Survey Software Reviews,
2012). A new account will be registered to start creating the feedback survey.
Then Kwik Surveys will provide guidance of choosing survey’s theme, adding
logo and questions, formatting the survey page and upload the survey. The
feedback survey will be divided into two parts and one is about the mobile
technologies and cutting-edge technologies displayed in the exhibition. In this
part, feedback questions will focus on the relationship between these
technologies and education, and the efficiency of these technologies’ usage.
Another part of the feedback questions is about audiences’ satisfaction of the
exhibition room and services. After creating the feedback survey, the online
link will be uploaded on Facebook and Twitter, in the experience areas
audiences can fill in the online survey immediately as well. Feedback survey
will also be printed out and participants can finish the survey in the exhibition
room.
7.2.5- Introduction of Gifts
Every participant will receive a scratchpad as a gift. The scratchpad has a
cover with the exhibition’s logo and slogan and inside pages with the
exhibition’s logo, slogan, lasting time and venue. This small gift can attract
more people to participate in the exhibition, and the participants’ friends may
see the scratchpad been used and become interested in the exhibition.
8. Reflections and Conclusion
In conclusion, this exhibition focuses on recommending schools to adopt
mobile technology and cutting-edge technologies to improve teaching and
learning quality. After viewing and experiencing four areas in the exhibition,
participants will have a thorough concept about displayed mobile technology
and cutting-edge technologies. Besides, five tools and small gifts will be used
to promote the exhibition and gather feedback from audiences. To sum up, this
exhibition has been formatted and technologies will be displayed

comprehensively. However, there are still some limitations that cannot be
ignored. First, since mobile technology and cutting-edge technology will cost a
significant amount of money, it will be difficult to popularize in ten campuses in
five countries. Furthermore, it takes time for tutors and students to adopt new
technologies and there may be some problems in exercise.

Data presentation and analysis
Thirty feedback surveys have been collected from participants and their
answers will be analysed. According to Figure 1, technologies in each area are
regarded as useful by more than sixty percent of the participants and
technologies in two experience areas satisfied more of them. This shows that
generally people are willing to adopt mobile technology and cutting-edge
technology in schools and they can learn about technologies more during

experiences.
Figure 1
Figure 2 strongly proves that people can operate these technologies without
significant problems as all the participants think these technologies are easy to
operate.
Figure 2
Smart board is also preferred by most participants due to the collaboration it
creates between tutors and students and Figure 3 can support this statement.

participants agree that face recognition system leads to invasion of privacy
while over half of them disagree with it. Whether schools apply face
recognition system needs further discussion.

Using rainbow here means that Wi-Fi can make people’s life more colorful. And the slogan is better mobile, better education. ii. The second screen will introduce the show guide of the exhibition. Visitors will be firstly guided to publicity area. Then along footprints on the floor, they will arrive at display area, which is on the second floor. Display area is mainly for watching and the following areas are mainly for experiencing. After visitors going downstairs, they can choose to go to experience area, cutting-edge experience area or retiring area. These areas will be introduced in detail in the following part. Finally, there will be volunteers and a submission case at the gate. Visitor who finishes his survey will get a gift from volunteers. iii. The third screen will introduce two prototypical exemplars of mobile technology and cutting edge technology: iCloud and Windows 8. 2.2- ICloud Graph 3: ICloud working pattern ICloud is an IT service provided by Apple. It allows users to store 5GB information in the servers free of charge. In the following part, its functions will be introduced in detail. 2.2.1-iOS device backup and restore
  • 8. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 8 Settings and data, such as photos, app data, messages, ringtones, etc. can be backed up and restored on a device running iOS 5 via iCloud. Backups can be linked to Wi-Fi when the device is locked. Users can store anything which can be appeared in the form of files in the cloud-based system and be provided with a platform for email and calendars. ICloud, which is implemented by the third-party, is available in apps through the iCloud API (Apple, 2011). 2.2.2-Applied in university Users can redact the same document on different devices via iCloud. The document can be synchronized with ICloud automatically if user establishes a document on iPhone. This function can not only be available on iOS devices, but also on other Apple devices. Therefore, student can modify his essay or assignment whenever and wherever he wants. In addition, to avoid coursework lost before deadline because of device broken, the documents can be backed up on iCloud and be edited on another device. 2.3-Windows 8 Everyone is familiar with Windows operating system, which is released by Microsoft Corporation. Windows 8 is the newest one launched on August 1, 2012 and be available for extensive users on October 26, 2012 (Morris, 2012). It is the default operating system for personal computers, Microsoft Surface and home theater PCs. Microsoft Surface, which will be introduced in the cutting edge area in detail, is a new product introduced by Microsoft.
  • 9. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 9 Graph 4: Windows 8 system 2.3.1-New and changed features i. Windows Explorer Currently, Windows Explorer is called File Explorer, which has a ribbon instead of command bar (Iam, 2012). More detailed statistics has been provided by file operation dialogs as well as pausing file transmission and improvements in managing conflicts while copying files. A new function, "File History" has added to Windows Explorer. A secondary storage device can back up and restore enhancive revisions of files (Anthony, 2012). ii. Skydrive Windows 8 online services and functionality are almost the same as iCloud. Each user can now register a Microsoft account, i.e. Windows Live ID, and log in to synchronize and backup applications and settings (Neil, 2012). A cloud server called Microsoft’s SkyDrive, is providing storage service just like iCloud. iii. Windows Store
  • 10. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 10 Graph 5: A music app for Windows 8 Windows Store apps is a new online store provided by Microsoft. According to Microsoft developer Jensen Harris, the store is mainly for touch screen environments and far different from desktop applications. There are varies of categories in apps, such as People app for social networks and Photos app for aggregating photos. 2.3.2-Applied in university Windows 8 now can be installed in university computers or on Microsoft Ships SUR40 40 Inch Surface Table. Surface Table is a cutting-edge technology, which will be introduced in the cutting-edge area. The high-tech and high-efficient features can provide students with better operating interface 3. Display area
  • 11. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 11 Graph 6: Display area (upstairs) This area is mainly for watching. Three products will be displayed in three showcases. Two volunteers will be ready to help everyone to understand these products in-depth. The first product is RFID. 3.1-RFID RFID, which is short for Radio-frequency identification, is a wireless communications technology. It can transfer data from a tag attached to an object by using radio-frequency electromagnetic fields, for the purpose of automatic identification and tracking. Graph 7: RFID used in parking lot 3.1.1-Application An RFID attached to goods can be used for tracking and supervising inventory, asset and staff. For example, an RFID can be attached to automobiles, books and computer equipments. The RFID is widely used in extensive application fields, in which the device is dominated by its economic benefit of corresponding areas, such as: i. Anti-counterfeiting of money and products ii. Electronic toll collection systems
  • 12. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 12 iii. Toll collection and contactless payment (Magrassi, 2001) iv. Machine readable travel documents v. logistics management 3.1.2- Applied in university i. Ongoing Time-office management: Card which is attached with RFID readers can register the regular attendance of each student and then the software system will send the message of arrival to terminal automatically. The attendance book will be sent to the designated class-tutor as well. The annual attendance report will be stored in the system. ii. Library Management: The same card can be used in the library for borrowing and returning books and can be linked to printers after valid setting. iii. Renewal and database updating: Every year, when students progress to a higher grade, school will update the system to transmit the newest transcripts to respective parents (rfid-in-school, n.d.). 3.2-Mobile POS machine Graph 8: Mobile POS Machine Mobile POS machine is a kind of RF-SIM terminal reader. Reader terminal makes connection with data server through the CDMA, GPRS, TCP/IP, etc. Users need to swipe RF-SIM card, which is equipped in smartphone, on mobile POS machine, and input relevant information (Charny, 2002).
  • 13. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 13 3.2.1-Applied in university i. For students: it can be applied in library for finding books, which can bring a lot of convenience to students. This application has another production called thick wide book collector. Students can find out the detailed information, e.g. the time when the book has been borrowed. It has high application adaptability, which can support multiple file formats like DBF, TXT, EXCEL, and MARK. ii. For staff: it is small in size and its ultra wide screen has humanized graphic interface and accord with human body engineering shape design and greatly improved the staff in the process of using in comfort. 3.3-Google glass Graph 9: Google glass Google glass is a new kind of production which is published in Google I/O meeting in April, 2012. It’s a Head-mounted display, which is used for augmenting reality. This glass equipped with android system is expected to displace smartphones. Because there’s no product in circulate in market, this product will be showed in the form of poster. 3.3.1-Applied in university Although the glass is small and light, a battery is set in the frame of the glass. There is also a screen on the right side. Therefore, it can be used to send message, search maps and listen to music, etc. The speech recognition makes every voice command come true. The system can be controlled to take
  • 14. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 14 a photo if it is told to do so (David, 2012). Hence, university students can take photos of the PPT slides in the lecture or seminar or even can download the material to their glass’s database just by voice command. In this way, students can read larger screen of image anywhere instead of being restricted to a laptop screen. 4. Experience area Graph 10: Experience area (blue area) In this section, a nearly real classroom is made as an experience area where participants can have a veritable access to application services and advanced devices. There will be a smart board in front of the classroom and 12 desks, each of which is equipped with an iPad4. In addition, six face recognition systems is put on each two desks. At least 36 people can participant in this activity simultaneously. More details concerning these apps and devices will be talked about in the following parts. Firstly, there are numerous useful application services which can be applied in the process of teaching and learning. 4.1-Useful application services 4.1.1-The official university App This app can help students and staff to find all the things they need for their campus life, finding actual places, searching resources in library, tracking their
  • 15. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 15 friends, getting exam results and ordering labs. New information is updated continuously in this app (Bra.Ac.Uk, 2004). 4.1.2-Blackboard Mobile™ Learn Graph 11: Blackboard Mobile™ Learn Blackboard learning system can be accessed not only by using computers but also by using this app in mobile phones. All the learning materials are available in an engaging and intuitive way on mobile devices (Bra.Ac.Uk, 2004). 4.1.3-Evernote Graph 12: Evernote It is a practical and frequently used app which can help students and teachers stay efficient and well-organized because of its function of taking photos, recording voice and creating to-do lists. Another advantage of this app is that it provides every user upload of 5G materials in the cloud, so that users can view their materials on any mobile devices (Bra.Ac.Uk, 2004). 4.1.4-Cam scanner
  • 16. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 16 Graph 13: Cam scanner By using this app, scanning can be accomplished anytime and anywhere. Teachers and students do not need to find scanner. Paper documents, receipts, notes, invoices, whiteboard discussions. These all can be scanned and processed by this app automatically. It cannot only scan but also have enhanced function of multiple edits which can make images clearer and more readable (Bra.Ac.Uk, 2004). 4.1.5-Keynote Graph 14: Keynote It is the most useful app for presentation which students and teacher perform every day. All the apple products, can install it which can show animated transitions and charts just by touching and tapping and create a remarkable presentation.3Dbar, area, line, and pie charts can highlight your data animated with new 3D chart builds such as Rotate, Grow, Crane and Radial. Besides, by using video mirroring, slides can also be displayed through HDTV, and the function of Presenter Display can realize the preview of notes and slides. Keynotes can also work with icloud so slides can be stored, downloaded and updated ted through any mobile devices (Bra.Ac.Uk, 2004). 4.2-Moodle Moodle is short for Modular Object- Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment. It is a software package for producing internet-based and web sites, which is
  • 17. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 17 designed for supporting a social constructions framework of education (Moodle, 2012). Moodle is mostly useful for universities, schools and government departments. In university, tutors can upload teaching materials to Moodle and students can download materials they want from Moodle after them logging in. Additionally, students can ask questions on Moodle if the platform is designed as a forum included. Quizzer will get the answer when tutors and other students see the question. In general, Moodle is an amazing tool for tutors and students to communicate with each other. All these apps will be installed in iPads on the tables for participants to have a practical experience. However, the amount of iPads is limited after all so for those people who cannot access iPads, QR codes for downloading these apps are posted on the table. In this way, the only thing participants need to do is to use their personal mobile phone to scan the QR codes and apps will be downloaded. 4.3-QR codes Graph 15: QR code QR code which stands for Quick Response code was initially invented to use in industries. But because of its fast readability and large storage capacity, it becomes more and more popular in other fields. Black modules (square dots) arranged in a square pattern make up the QR code on a white background (Qrcode, 2000). It is now used over a much wider range of applications,
  • 18. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 18 including commercial tracking, entertainment and transport ticketing, product/loyalty marketing (Shop2mobi, 2009). For example, when a supermarket has some products in discount, customers can use a QR code decoder which is a mobile app to capture the discount (Newman, 2011). What’s more, a company's information such as address and relevant information alongside its alpha-numeric text data can be stored as the form QR code and information can be got in a second (Brititsh Standards, 2009). Apps for scanning QR Codes can be found on nearly all smartphone devices. QR Codes can be used in Google's mobile Android operating system using Google Goggles and also IOS devices iPhone, iPod, iPad via barcode scanners from 3rd party. The new iPhone 5 has QR code folders to manage your QR codes. Symbian operating system in Nokia also has the feature of a barcode scanner which can read QR Codes. QR codes can also be of great benefit in education. For instance, teachers can store their additional sources mentioned in a lecture in the form of QR code so students do not need to write down the website link or try to find the sources themselves and the only thing then need to do is scan the QR code. All the learning materials can be viewed or downloaded very quickly, which can improve learning efficiency. Students and teachers can also save their personal information in QR code. If a student wants to know a teacher’s office hour and office location, he can just scan QR codes. Meanwhile, students themselves can scan each other’s QR code if they meet at the first time as a study group to exchange contact information. Consequently, QR code is not only useful in marketplace or industry; it can also be of great value for education. 4.4- Smart board Secondly, there is a smart board hanging in front of the classroom. Touch detection is used by this interactive to detect users’ input for example double quick clicks, scrolling, expanding images, just the same operating method as
  • 19. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 19 normal personal computer input devices (Baburajan, 2009). This smart board can also serve as a larch touch screen to display a computer’s video output assisted by a projector. Classically, each board is equipped by four pens using digital ink which avoid the waste of whiteboard markers. Furthermore, many kinds of media such as images, video and notes can be compiled into virtual notebook merely by operating on the smart board when smart Notebook software is included (Smarttech, 2010). Another advantage of Smart Notebook software is that it can record every movement done by teachers on the board so that students can review what teachers said in class and go over the content again and again until they exactly understand. According to Eilola (2005), the smart board is thought to be an intelligent whiteboard surface and also a special space for collaboration supported by computer. He also takes the view that students can really engage themselves in such information spaces instead of simply gazing at them. He explains how the Smart Board interactive whiteboard system offers an information space that allows his students to engage in active collaboration. He claims that there are three distinct functions of the smart board that benefit u users. Firstly, large amounts of information can be provided by the smart board. Secondly, active collaboration is invited by the information space. Lastly, contingent and dynamic work can be produced. 4.5- Face recognition system Thirdly, taking communication between 10 campuses into consideration, a face recognition system with a camera is put on each desk. Nowadays, the technology of face recognition is widely used in various different fields. It is useful to the management or security for companies to check on work attendance or for private houses to prevent thieves (Crawford, 2011). In terms of criminal investigation, face recognition together with internet can quickly search and track down offenders on a gigantic scale. Furthermore, face recognition can also confirm personal information security when people
  • 20. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 20 conduct e-commerce by identifying biologically facial characteristics (Krause, 2002). In the field of education, it is also very useful. Firstly, it can confirm students’ attendance in which way students cannot let others help them sign in so they can no longer escape from absence from classes. Secondly, when in class, students’ expressions on their faces can be captured with the help of the smart and advanced face recognition software in the system. So if students begin to yawn and feel boring, the system can give a respond to teachers to make a joke or say something interesting. Thirdly, it can also prevent students from cheating in the exams and acts as a supervisor. Meanwhile, the camera can realize the video meeting or communication by internet. 5. Cutting edge technology experience area Graph 16: Cutting-edge experience area (yellow area) Another part of the exhibition is cutting edge technology experience area. In this part, people can use cutting edge productions by themselves then know more about these advance productions. There will be three “Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface” set in the experience area. People in this area can put their mobile phones or other kinds of things on this table and experience the amazing performance. To make people experience more, three windows surface pros will be set on each smart table. This surface system is brought out by Microsoft and launched windows 8 system.
  • 21. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 21 5.1-Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface One of these products set in this area is a special table named ‘Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface’. In 2011, Microsoft cooperated with Samsung and launched this new production. So the hardware of this Microsoft system production is made by Samsung. Its 1080p LCD touchscreen which runs surface 2.0 can provide consumer best visual feeling (Techblog, 2012). Because of its thickness is thin, this surface not only can be used as a table but also can be fixed on wall or implanted in furniture. People can use it reading articles, browsing pictures, listening to the music, playing games and many extra functions that ordinal computers cannot achieve. For example, their Multi-touch screens can response 52 points at the same time. Moreover, with the Pixel Sense technology attached in the table, this touch screen can distinguish things on it and quickly deal with or explain them. It means if you put a cup of juice on this table, the surface can identify the type of the juice. This special surface also can read bar code. When you put a production with code on the table, the system will tell you all the information about the good. It is truly a useful smart table which is used in some high-level companies. For example AT&T, a telecommunication company in America, decide to put this table in all of its branches. When consumers put their mobile phones on the table, the surface will tell them the basic information about their mobile phone account, such as bills and privileges. People also can put pictures, music or other data into the mobile equipment like phones, cameras and pads by fingers sliding. In this way, this smart table can be used in teaching. Tutors can upload materials used in class in the table. Then, students can put their smart phone or pads on this surface and download these materials. Some small gifts will be given to participants to promote the exhibition in another way and this will be explained after five tools. 7.2- Illustrations of Five Tools 7.2.1-Facebook and Twitter Facebook and Twitter are two of the most popular worldwide social networking websites with more than 900 million and 550 million participants (Dugan, 2012). The enormous number of users brings more possibility and convenience for contacting people and drawing people’s attention from the five countries where different campuses are located through online platforms. Firstly, new accounts will be registered and home pages will be created to help promoting the exhibition. Then, the information of the exhibition such as lasting time and venue will be uploaded. Furthermore, the technologies displayed in the exhibition will also be showed generally in form of texts and images, which do not only make the concept of the exhibition clearer but make further promotion easier as well. Two experience areas will be introduced particularly in order to attract more interest from people. Other information about the exhibition outside Facebook and Twitter will also be uploaded in form of links and short explanations. Besides uploading information, interaction will also be created on Facebook and Twitter between staff and audiences and feedback can be collected. Immediate feedback can help improving the exhibition services or re-promote the exhibition. Based on viral marketing mode in Facebook and Twitter, the advertisement can be spread rapidly and widely.

Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 25 Graph 22: Sample home page in Facebook 7.2.2- Google AdWords Google search is one of the most popular search engines worldwide and its market share in US reached over 66 percent (Goodwin, 2012), which proves that Google search’s advantage is obvious compared with other search engines and advertising on Google can gain more attention. Google AdWords is Google’s notable product which focuses on providing efficient advertising service with rational price. An advertisement of the exhibition will be made and some keywords will be set at first, and then Google AdWords will show the advertisement above or next to the search result when people’s search match
  • 26. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 26 the keywords, when people search or browse on the mobile phones they can also see this advertisement. In order to promote this exhibition, mobile technology and cutting-edge technology can be defined as keywords as they are the contents of this exhibition. People who are interested in mobile technologies and cutting-edge technologies can see the advertisement of this exhibition through Google AdWords. In the budget aspect, Google AdWords differs from traditional advertising in payment as its standard pricing model depends on a cost-per-click (CPC) based auction, which means that the advertisement only need to be paid when someone clicks on it. Daily budget is also decided by advertiser and can be changed at any time. Furthermore, Different kinds of advertisement can be created, including text advertising, image advertising and video advertising. Using Google AdWords can promote the exhibition in wide range and give potential audiences a general concept of this exhibition. 7.2.3-Tubemogul PlayTime Platform Tubemogul is a famous video marketing company and is the first one built for branding in this field. PlayTime Platform is Tubemogul’s core product which integrates real-time video purchasing, advertisement service, targeting most engaged audiences and brand measurement (Emeryville, 2012). Differ from Google AdWords, Tubemogul PlayTime is expert in the media field and can provide more specific service about video advertising. The most significant reason for choosing Tubemogul PlayTime to promote the exhibition is that it can put advertisements on its partner’s websites. People can see the advertisement while browsing other websites, and this result in some people who ignore information on Facebook and Twitter and do not search the defined keywords on Google become the exhibition’s potential audiences. Tubemogul PlayTime can simplify the process of purchasing video advertising and setting up video campaigns. In addition, a wide variety of advertising formats can be chosen, such as pre-roll advertising which is a short video in front of significant contents on media websites and in-display advertising which is part of the
  • 27. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 27 content on websites. Tubemogul PlayTime also relays its standard pricing model on cost-per-view (CPV) or cost-per-completion (CPCom) based auction so that the budget can be saved and used more accurately. Tubemogul PlayTime can provide attractive visual advertisement and quality service. Graph 23: Pre-roll advertisement 7.2.4-Kwik Surveys Kwik Surveys is one of the largest online survey tools and it is totally free for all users to create surveys with unlimited numbers of questions and answers. Different forms of questions can be chosen and the survey page can be formatted with a variety of themes to decorate the survey. Furthermore, the survey results are easy to view and Kwik Surveys will help creating reports of
  • 28. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 28 results and reports can be simply downloaded (Survey Software Reviews, 2012). A new account will be registered to start creating the feedback survey. Then Kwik Surveys will provide guidance of choosing survey’s theme, adding logo and questions, formatting the survey page and upload the survey. The feedback survey will be divided into two parts and one is about the mobile technologies and cutting-edge technologies displayed in the exhibition. In this part, feedback questions will focus on the relationship between these technologies and education, and the efficiency of these technologies’ usage. Another part of the feedback questions is about audiences’ satisfaction of the exhibition room and services. After creating the feedback survey, the online link will be uploaded on Facebook and Twitter, in the experience areas audiences can fill in the online survey immediately as well. Feedback survey will also be printed out and participants can finish the survey in the exhibition room. 7.2.5- Introduction of Gifts Every participant will receive a scratchpad as a gift. The scratchpad has a cover with the exhibition’s logo and slogan and inside pages with the exhibition’s logo, slogan, lasting time and venue. This small gift can attract more people to participate in the exhibition, and the participants’ friends may see the scratchpad been used and become interested in the exhibition. 8. Reflections and Conclusion In conclusion, this exhibition focuses on recommending schools to adopt mobile technology and cutting-edge technologies to improve teaching and learning quality. After viewing and experiencing four areas in the exhibition, participants will have a thorough concept about displayed mobile technology and cutting-edge technologies. Besides, five tools and small gifts will be used to promote the exhibition and gather feedback from audiences. To sum up, this exhibition has been formatted and technologies will be displayed
  • 29. Group Leader: SHI_ Duanrui_6509092 29 comprehensively. However, there are still some limitations that cannot be ignored. First, since mobile technology and cutting-edge technology will cost a significant amount of money, it will be difficult to popularize in ten campuses in five countries. Furthermore, it takes time for tutors and students to adopt new technologies and there may be some problems in exercise. 9. References Anthony, S.
