Accreditation
Colgate University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher
Education, an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of
Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Colgate is also
accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS). All Colgate degree
programs are registered by the New York State Education Department.
Academic Calendar
Colgate University’s academic calendar consists of two 14-week semesters (70
instructional days), followed by a one-week final examination period. Students
normally enroll in four full-credit courses each semester to fulfill the graduation
requirement of 32 course credits.
Award of Credit
Effective Fall 1964, Colgate adopted a course credit system in which each
academic course carries one course credit. Accordingly, no semester hour
equivalent is assigned to courses. It is recommended that a Colgate course
credit (1.00) be evaluated at 4.00 semester hours/credits.
Effective Fall 2006, Colgate modified its course credit system to allow fractional
credit (0.25 or 0.50). Fractional credit may be awarded for half-semester courses,
faculty-supervised independent study/research, and components added to full-
credit courses that require a substantial degree of additional investment by
students (e.g., laboratories, service learning, extended study, performance). It is
recommended that 0.50 credit courses be evaluated at 2.00 semester
hours/credits, and 0.25 credit courses be evaluated at 1.00 semester hour/credit.
Prior to Fall 2006 term, credit was not awarded for laboratory sections, nor
were laboratory sections recorded on the transcript.
Grading System
I. The grades used to indicate the quality of a student’s performance in a
course are as follows: A/Excellent, B/Good, C/Satisfactory, D/Poor but
passing, F/Failing. The Grade Point Average (GPA) is obtained by
dividing the number of quality points by the number of course credits
attempted for grades. Colgate grades are assigned the following quality
points to full (1.00) credit courses:
Grade Qual Pts Grade Qual Pts
A+ 4.33 C+ 2.33
A 4.00 C 2.00
A- 3.67 C- 1.67
B+ 3.33 D+ 1.33
B 3.00 D 1.00
B- 2.67 D- 0.67
F 0.00
II. The following grades are not calculated into the GPA and carry no quality
points:

Baccalaureate

S Satisfactory for one-course-per-term grade option (Juniors or Seniors

right of the quality points.
I Course included and calculated into earned course credits and GPA.
E Course excluded from earned course credits and GPA.
Graduation Requirements for Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) Degree
September 1992 (class of 1996)-Present: 32 course credits and minimum
cumulative GPA of 2.00 are required for Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) degree.
September 1989 (class of 1993)-September 1991 (class of 1995): 32 course
credits and minimum cumulative GPA of 1.80.
September 1982 (class of 1986)-September 1988 (class of 1992): 32 course
credits, 3 January projects, and minimum cumulative GPA of 1.80.
September 1964 (class of 1968)-September 1981 (class of 1985):
1. 32 course credits, with a minimum GPA of 1.80 and a minimum of 58
quality points based on the following grading scale: 1 course A=4, 1 course
B=3, 1 course C=2, 1 course D=1, 1 course F=0.
2. Satisfactory completion of 4 January Special Study Projects, not included in the
GPA, and rated as Satisfactory, Unsatisfactory, or Honors. This was a 4-
week program. No course credit was assigned to these projects, although
each project represented approximately 150 clock hours of academic work.
Adjustments were made for students in the classes of 1965-1967 who were
enrolled under both the semester-hour system (15 semester hours per term) and
the course credit system (4 course credits per term):
1965: 90 semester hours, 8 course credits (1964-65),
1 January Special Studies Project
1966: 60 semester hours, 16 course credits (1964-66),
2 January Special Studies Projects
1967: 30 semester hours, 24 course credits (1964-67),
3 January Special Studies Projects
Special explanation for Spring 1970 semester only: Because of exceptional
national circumstances that affected the last several weeks of the semester,
Colgate allowed all students the option of Pass/Fail grading.
Beginning September 1970 (class of 1974), the graduation requirements as
stated in 1 and 2 above were adjusted to give students the option of graduating
with a total of 32 course credits and 3 January projects, or 31 course credits and
4 January projects.
Prior to September 1964, the requirements for the A.B. degree were 120
semester hours of credit, with a minimum GPA of 1.80 and a minimum of 225
quality points based on the following grading scale: 1 Hour A=3; 1 Hour B=2;
1 Hour C=1; 1 Hour D=0; 1 Hour F=0
