ACCREDITATION, GOVERNANCE AND HISTORY
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) is accredited by the Commission
on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate
and baccalaureate degrees. SCF is governed by the Florida legislature and by the
SCF District Board of Trustees. Established in 1957 as Manatee Junior College, the
College’s name changed to Manatee Community College in 1985 and to State
College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota as of July 1, 2009, to reflect its expanded
mission as a two-year/four-year degree-granting institution.
UNIT OF CREDIT
All SCF credits are reflected in semester hours and are based on a four-point
system. One semester hour/credit is given normally for a class that meets 50
minutes per week for approximately 16 weeks (inclusive of final examinations). Most
courses carry three credits and meet for three hours per week for 16 weeks.
Semester credits also are given in short terms but the classes meet longer and more
frequently each week.
College preparatory credits are carried by college preparatory (remedial) courses
that serve to prepare students for degreed credit courses. College preparatory
credits cannot be used to meet degree requirements and do not count toward the
GPA.
GRADING SYSTEM
Grading of Courses that carry Degree Credit
Grades Quality Point
A – Excellent………………………………. 4 PTS per semester hour
B – Good…………………………………… 3 PTS per semester hour
C – Average……………………………….. 2 PTS per semester hour
D – Poor……………………………………. 1 PT per semester hour
F – Failure……………………................... 0 PTS per semester hour
WF – Withdrawn Failing………………….. 0 PTS per semester hour
The scholastic grade point average (GPA) is computed by dividing the total number
of quality points earned by the number of semester hours for which grades were
received (excluding “I,” “N,” “NP,” “P,” “S,” “U,” “W” and “X”).
I – Incomplete
N and NP – progress made in the course, but did not complete course requirements.
P and S – Pass/Satisfactory; passed the course
U – Unsatisfactory; did not pass the course
W – withdrawn prior to the withdrawal deadline
X – Audit
Courses denoted with an asterisk (*) before the course title are transfer courses that
are equivalent to SCF courses. Three asterisks (***) denote a course with no grade.
GRADING OF COLLEGE PREPARATORY COURSES
Remedial courses that carry college preparatory credit do not meet degree
requirements and grades are not calculated into the grade point averages. Grades of
“A.,” “B.” and “C.” signify successful completion and allow advancement to the next
course. Grades of “F.,” “N.,” “W.,” “WF.” and “X.” signify that successful completion
was not achieved and the course would need to be repeated.
GRADING OF INSTITUTIONAL CREDITS (Educator Preparation Institute (EPI
subject) courses)
These courses cannot be used to meet degree requirements and do not count
toward the GPA. These credits only are applicable toward the alternative teacher
certification program. Grades of “A:,” “B:” and “C.” signify successful completion and
allow advancement to the next course. Grades of “D:,” “F:,” “W:” and “WF:” signify
that successful completion was not achieved and the course would need to be
repeated.
REPEAT INDICATOR
A – Repeated – Course calculated in the GPA; no earned credits
E – Repeated – Course was not calculated in the GPA.
I – Repeated – Course was calculated in the GPA.
A grade with an asterisk (*) denotes a transfer course
ACADEMIC TERMS
SCF normally has the following terms each academic year:
Fall term (16 weeks) – beginning late August
Spring term (16 weeks) – beginning early January
Summer A (6 weeks) – beginning early May
Summer B (6 weeks) – beginning late June
Summer C (12 weeks) – beginning early May
CLAST REQUIREMENT
Students who were awarded an associate in arts degree between August 1, 1984
and June 30, 2009, have met the CLAST requirements for the state of Florida. A
code of 996, 997 or 998 denotes CLAST exemption. A code of 999 denotes CLAST
waiver.
DEAN’S/PRESIDENT’S LIST
Students who complete six or more degree credits in a term (excluding college
preparatory credits) with a GPA of 3.5 or above are named to the Dean’s List, and
students who complete twelve or more degree credits in a term (excluding college
preparatory credits) and achieve a GPA of 3.8 or above are named to the
President’s List. Term honors are listed on the transcript.
HONORS COURSES
Institutional honors are designated by an “H” before the course subject through
spring 2001. Beginning summer 2001, honors courses are designated in the course
title. Honors courses credits and GPA are calculated the same as degree credit
courses.
GOOD STANDING
All students are considered to be in good standing unless a remark to the contrary
appears on the transcript.
GRADUATION
Graduation terms are posted to the transcript four times each year (December,
May, June and August). A minimum of 60 semester credits is required for degree
completion for an associate degree and 120 semester credits for a baccalaureate
degree.
HONORS GRADUATION

Science, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science degree are eligible for
the following honor designations: Summa Cum Laude – 3.90 to 4.00 cumulative
