EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY
EXPLANATORY LEGEND
Eastern Washington University was initially named Benjamin P. Cheney
Academy, and was formed on April 3, 1882. By 1890, the major purpose of the
Academy shifted to higher education and the name changed to the State Normal
School at Cheney. By 1937, the Normal School offered baccalaureate degrees
and its name changed to Eastern Washington College of Education. Within 11
years, Bachelors of Arts and Science degrees and Masters of Education were
offered. After 1961, the institution was renamed Eastern Washington State
College, baccalaureate and masters degrees were awarded, and the College was
restructured into its present system of Schools and Colleges. Eastern
Washington University was adopted in 1977 when the institution was
designated as a regional university. In 2002, the Doctor of Physical Therapy
program was approved.
ACCREDITATION
The University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and
Universities, the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education

GRADES/WORK IN PROGRESS
Assigned grades appear after the course listing for completed work. If there is
no grade for a course, this indicates that the instructor has not submitted a grade
or that there is work in progress at the time the transcript is issued. (Credits will
be issued upon completion of the term.)
ACADEMIC FORGIVENESS
Undergraduate students may make a one-time petition to have up to two
consecutive quarters or one semester of credit entirely removed from the
calculation of their credits and GPA. The course work must have been
completed at least five years prior to the petition.
Forgiven courses cannot be used to satisfy any academic requirement.
GRADE POINT AVERAGE
To compute the cumulative GPA: Divide the total number of quality points
(QPTS) by the total number of GPA hours (GPA-HRS) for the cumulative
GPA. (Pass/No Credit, X, Y, and W grades, as well as courses with no grades
are not computed in the GPA.) However, X grades that are not completed
within the time limit set by the instructor are converted to the grade noted.
Prior to Fall Quarter, 1985, X grades assigned by the instructors will remain on
the record with an X grade unless officially changed by the instructor.
GRADING SYSTEM
Eastern operates on a quarter system. The quarter hour of credit is the unit of
instruction.
Numeric Grades. Grades at Eastern are reported in numerical fractions to the
nearest tenth. The numerical grades are based on the letter grade system used
prior to the 1977-78 academic year and general equivalents are as follows:

GRADE POINT AVERAGE To compute the cumulative GPA: Divide the total number of quality points (QPTS) by the total number of GPA hours (GPA-HRS) for the cumulative GPA. (Pass/No Credit, X, Y, and W grades, as well as courses with no grades are not computed in the GPA.) However, X grades that are not completed within the time limit set by the instructor are converted to the grade noted. Prior to Fall Quarter, 1985, X grades assigned by the instructors will remain on the record with an X grade unless officially changed by the instructor. GRADING SYSTEM Eastern operates on a quarter system. The quarter hour of credit is the unit of instruction. Numeric Grades. Grades at Eastern are reported in numerical fractions to the nearest tenth. The numerical grades are based on the letter grade system used prior to the 1977-78 academic year and general equivalents are as follows: Numeric Letter Numeric Letter Grade Grade Equivalent Grade Grade Equivalent 4.0................................A 2.2 3.9 2.1 3.8 2.0................................C 3.7................................A- 1.9 3.6 1.8 3.5 1.7................................C- 3.4 1.6 3.3................................B+ 1.5 3.2 1.4 3.1 1.3................................D+ 3.0................................B 1.2 2.9 1.1 2.8 1.0................................D 2.7................................B- 0.9 2.6 0.8 2.5 0.7................................D- 2.4 0.0................................F 2.3................................C+ Letter Grade Symbols in use today at Eastern are: Grade Symbols Conditions for Which They Are Assigned CA Proficiency Placement Credit grade; credit granted, but no grade point assigned. W (Withdrawal) Withdrawal from a course or the University X (Incomplete) Temporary Grade; special circumstances prevent student from completing the course. (Example: X 0.0–1 where “0.0” = conversion grade if additional coursework not completed and “1” = number of additional quarters allowed to complete coursework.) XF Violation of academic integrity.
