Complete Analysis of Q music magazine
Q magazine is a monthly magazine which is centred on rock and roll. It was first published
by the EMAP (East Midlands Allied Press) in October 1986. It was originally to be called cue
(as in a sense of cueing a record, ready to play) yet changed to avoid being mistaken with the
snooker magazine. Another reason is that a single lettered title is more prominent on
newsstands. In 2008 EMAP sold Q to the Bauer Media Group, and has been with them to
this day.
The genre of the music in the magaizne is rock and roll, the style of the top music artists
It is the UK’s number one actively purchased music magazine and is Q magazines contents is
about music with a wide variety of review sections about music, reissues, television films
and games. However most of the magazine is filled with interviews.
Target audience
The target audience for Q magazine
are for an older generation, which are
people in their 30’s to 40’s who are
interested in alternative music. These
people are looking for a more
sophisticated about the style of music
that is being made, rather than
fashion senses that are in magazines such as Kerrang. Although their target audience is older
generations it would seem that younger generations are reading more into the magazine.

Multi-Platform
Q released its own radio show during 2008, and is currently only able to be viewed in the UK
on DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) and online. It also launched its own TV show in 2000
and now host’s its own award show. The awards show originally began in 1990.
The layout of Q magazine is very
formal with the masthead in large white
text, in a red box, which helps to create
the magazines house style. Yet the
magazine front cover always tends to
focus more on the main image, as can
be seen by the image above the person
on the front of the magazine is
‘smashing’ the Q logo as to show he is
more important. This helps to draw
attention to the magazine as it would
stand out from others in the store.
The contents page is split into two sections with
regulars in one column and reviews and features in
their own sections, the house style carries on
through the magazine as the Q logo is seen at the
top of the page. The Colour style as well carries on
through the magazine as it is mainly white and
read.
