Five Simple Steps
I. Select the two works of art from European culture during the time period covered by this course from two different categories:
· Visual art, including sculpture, mosaics, painting, architecture, and other forms
· Literature, including poetry, a play, fiction, and other forms
· Music in what we think of as the Classical tradition (not popular or folk songs), including forms such as the suite, oratorio, mass, motet, opera, formal dance or ballet music, chorale, and so forth. Some of these works are lengthy, so you may listen to and write about a section or movement of a longer work if you choose. For example, rather than write about Handel’s entire three-hour oratorio, The Messiah, you could write about one section such as the aria, “I know that my Redeemer liveth.”
Example: In your paper, you may want to write about a sculpture (i.e., visual art) by the Classical Greek sculptor Praxiteles and a magnifcat, a choral religious work (i.e., music), by the Italian Renaissance composer Palestrina. Or you may want to write about verses by the Archaic Greek poet Sappho (i.e., literature) and a suite by the English Renaissance composer John Dowland (i.e., music).
II. Craft an introduction that gives your reader the WHAT and the WHY.
a) What! What are you comparing? What are you contrasting? Your introduction will include information about both works,indicating as fully as possible the following:
1. Name of artist
2. Name of work
3. Period/date
4. Location or origin
5. Medium and/or size
b) Why! Why are you comparing the works?Here is where you state the “agenda,” main idea, or reason you are comparing these works. Remember, this is your response to these works. Ask yourself the following kinds of questions: What does each work represent from its time period? What elements illustrate that this work is from that time period? What does it symbolize or represent?
III. Include a brief background.
In the body of your paper, as you compare and contrast the works, provide the vital background information that is crucial for your reader in understanding the two works, which include your own personal observations, thoughts, and reflections on both works.
IV. Compare and Contrast the Works
· Discuss similarities between the two works by pointing out what they have in common in the body of your paper. This may be challenging, since we are not used to comparing, say, music with art, or architecture with poetry. But see where your ideas and imagination take you!
· Discuss differences between the two works in the body of your paper using words such as “unlike,” “whereas,” and so on. What about the two works strikes you as decidedly different? Not just the form; of course, music is different from a painting!
· Does the music offer an exalted, outgoing feeling, while the painting provides a somber sense of introspection? What are some key differences in the ideas and feelings ...

The assignment is to write a 2-3 page paper on an art work in a New York City museum. The idea is that you will go to the museum and have a chance to see the work in person, and that what you see will help to inform your paper.
On the next page, you will find a list of recommended artworks and where they are located. However, you can also choose another work from any period, region of the world, and medium – subject to my approval. If this is from a period we have not discussed yet, just make sure you’ll know how to discuss the object correctly.

For the third essay assignment you will write a piece of art criticism, that is, an essay that examines an artwork (or two or three related works) in detail and with insight. Your subject may come from any of the genres of cultural production we’ve discussed: literature, art, film, theatre, dance, food, fashion, design, architecture, advertising, the list goes on. Make an argument for why these works are interesting, thought-provoking, and moving.
It is important that you choose something not merely because you like it, but because you feel there is something there to explore intellectually, something meaningful to say or discover about it. Keep in mind our discussions of what culture does for us, what we do with it, and why we seek it out. Think about cultural objects and activities as the free and creative response to life in a given society and time, or to some of the conditions of human life generally. Remember that art involves a marriage of meaning and form. That is, we don’t just care what art means or says, we care how that meaning has been created or constructed. In artworks, arguments and ideas are always embodied in form.
Past papers have considered a trio films depicting the Holocaust, visual art concerned with the effects of technology on modern society, the depiction of romantic love in Korean soap operas. The possibilities are vast. The important thing is to clearly connect ideas and questions to the works of culture. Your own voice and mind should lead the way as you interpret, analyze, and describe. Avoid at all costs a paper that dumps a lot of information or biography on the reader.
The essay will be five pages, following the normal formatting guidelines. Any external language, ideas, and information must be cited using MLA style. See schedule for due dates.

Art is a provocative medium, and your challenge in writing about art may often be
to define and evaluate the artist’s choices and techniques, which, according to your
intellect and perception, arouse interest and convey meaning. In most cases, then, you
will be translating the visual (what you see, or observe) into language (what you write).
In order to do this, you will have to be extremely attentive to the characteristics of the work—your observations.
This means that your description will incorporate a large portion of your essay. Remember
to be attentive to the vocabulary of the discipline of Art. I f you do not know what a word means, better not to use it.
You must also be able to develop a thesis statement with a detailed analysis and argument about the artwork you have chosen.
Therefore, you must consider what it is you want to say, and use description to make that
point. In many ways, writing an Art History essay is similar to writing other types of
essays in the Humanities. It requires a clear and focused topic, an arguable thesis, an
organized format and structure, clear and coherent paragraphs, and a command of
grammar and style.
Comparison and Contrast
In many beginning Art History courses, and in more advanced ones as well, you
will be asked to write a paper in which you make a comparison and contrast between two
works of art. This type of essay usually requires a substantial comparative judgment of the two works, which will function as your thesis statement.
One option for a thesis statement for this kind of comparative essay could be based on how you see the two works in relation to each other and to some aspect of the human condition, or culture, or history. It could be, for example, that both artists painted peasants working in a field, but one painting suggests the oneness of humans and nature, perhaps because the figures appear to be an integral part of the field in which they are working, while the other painting emphasizes the separation between humans and nature. The evidence you provide for your thesis will include your interpretation, analysis, and description of the characteristics of both works, and must at all times relate to your thesis. For example, if you are discussing horizontality or verticality, you need to first accurately and clearly describe these elements in both works and then evaluate how these visual orientations demonstrate the validity of your thesis concerning humans as a part of nature or separate from it.
Unless the assignment specifies a work-by-work approach, it is usually best that
you do not divide the paper into two discrete sections: a discussion of one work of art
followed by a discussion of the other. Instead, each paragraph can include discussion of
both works in relation to a particular element or a well thought-out combination of

This paper will be a critical examination of a work or group of works created by a
particular artist within a particular movement. I can also be about a theoretical
idea or the philosophy behind a particular movement (possible subjects might be
Appropriation, Greenberg vs. Rosenberg, etc.). It should not only discuss the
purely artistic problems and solutions (for example, composition, materials) but
should also examine the work(s) in terms of its theoretical aspects (for example,
the rise of popular culture, art as autonomous object, the expanded field, notions
of identity and/or politics, etc.)
Begin your paper with a description of the work of art. This should include such
basic elements as: artist, title, date, medium, dimensions. You should also
describe
the work’s composition
subject matter materials and technique. This
should serve as the introductory section/paragraph(s) of your essay.
At this point you will need to research on the artist, the work, the movement and
the dominant ideas of the time in which it was created. You will also need to think
about what types of theoretical concerns might have been in the artist’s mind
when he created these images. For example, is the artist reacting to the past in
terms of such ideas as appropriation? Is she/he thinking about the notion of
identity, politics, gender, place, etc.?
For example, let’s say that you feel your
work is about Identity. In that case, you will need to do some research on the
concept of identity itself. You might, therefore, first want to talk about the very
nature of identity: Is the self a unified entity (for example, Descartes vs. Merleau-
Pony and/or Lacan)? Or, for example, what is the relationship between identity
and gender?
Since this is an advanced level course, the idea of the paper is to help you learn
how to integrate theoretical concepts with the works of art themselves. This is not
an easy task so you will need to start to think about your subject early on in the
semester. I am here to help you work out your ideas and in fact, you must check
with me before you begin to work on your essay.
The paper will be due the last day of class and should be approximately ten
pages in length (double-spaced, 12 pt.) and should contain citations that are
properly formatted in either MLA or Chicago style and must also contain a
bibliography.

Unbeknownst to many people, he started creating The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations Millennium General Assembly sometime after World War II in a rented garage in preparation for the second coming of Jesus Christ. Hampton essentially used junk furniture, cardboard, plastics, and foil pieced together with glue, tape, and tacks to create tables, crowns, lecterns, altars, and bishop’s chairs. Hampton also kept a notebook filled with a cryptic writing that is yet to be deciphered.

For the third essay assignment you will write a piece of art criticism, that is, an essay that examines an artwork (or two or three related works) in detail and with insight. Your subject may come from any of the genres of cultural production we’ve discussed: literature, art, film, theatre, dance, food, fashion, design, architecture, advertising, the list goes on. Make an argument for why these works are interesting, thought-provoking, and moving.
It is important that you choose something not merely because you like it, but because you feel there is something there to explore intellectually, something meaningful to say or discover about it. Keep in mind our discussions of what culture does for us, what we do with it, and why we seek it out. Think about cultural objects and activities as the free and creative response to life in a given society and time, or to some of the conditions of human life generally. Remember that art involves a marriage of meaning and form. That is, we don’t just care what art means or says, we care how that meaning has been created or constructed. In artworks, arguments and ideas are always embodied in form.
Past papers have considered a trio films depicting the Holocaust, visual art concerned with the effects of technology on modern society, the depiction of romantic love in Korean soap operas. The possibilities are vast. The important thing is to clearly connect ideas and questions to the works of culture. Your own voice and mind should lead the way as you interpret, analyze, and describe. Avoid at all costs a paper that dumps a lot of information or biography on the reader.

Art is a provocative medium, and your challenge in writing about art may often be
to define and evaluate the artist’s choices and techniques, which, according to your
intellect and perception, arouse interest and convey meaning. In most cases, then, you
will be translating the visual (what you see, or observe) into language (what you write).
In order to do this, you will have to be extremely attentive to the characteristics of the work—your observations.
This means that your description will incorporate a large portion of your essay. Remember
to be attentive to the vocabulary of the discipline of Art. I f you do not know what a word means, better not to use it.
You must also be able to develop a thesis statement with a detailed analysis and argument about the artwork you have chosen.
Therefore, you must consider what it is you want to say, and use description to make that
point. In many ways, writing an Art History essay is similar to writing other types of
essays in the Humanities. It requires a clear and focused topic, an arguable thesis, an
organized format and structure, clear and coherent paragraphs, and a command of
grammar and style.
Comparison and Contrast
In many beginning Art History courses, and in more advanced ones as well, you
will be asked to write a paper in which you make a comparison and contrast between two
works of art. This type of essay usually requires a substantial comparative judgment of the two works, which will function as your thesis statement.
One option for a thesis statement for this kind of comparative essay could be based on how you see the two works in relation to each other and to some aspect of the human condition, or culture, or history. It could be, for example, that both artists painted peasants working in a field, but one painting suggests the oneness of humans and nature, perhaps because the figures appear to be an integral part of the field in which they are working, while the other painting emphasizes the separation between humans and nature. The evidence you provide for your thesis will include your interpretation, analysis, and description of the characteristics of both works, and must at all times relate to your thesis. For example, if you are discussing horizontality or verticality, you need to first accurately and clearly describe these elements in both works and then evaluate how these visual orientations demonstrate the validity of your thesis concerning humans as a part of nature or separate from it.
Unless the assignment specifies a work-by-work approach, it is usually best that
you do not divide the paper into two discrete sections: a discussion of one work of art
followed by a discussion of the other. Instead, each paragraph can include discussion of
both works in relation to a particular element or a well thought-out combination of

This paper will be a critical examination of a work or group of works created by a
particular artist within a particular movement. I can also be about a theoretical
idea or the philosophy behind a particular movement (possible subjects might be
Appropriation, Greenberg vs. Rosenberg, etc.). It should not only discuss the
purely artistic problems and solutions (for example, composition, materials) but
should also examine the work(s) in terms of its theoretical aspects (for example,
the rise of popular culture, art as autonomous object, the expanded field, notions
of identity and/or politics, etc.)
Begin your paper with a description of the work of art. This should include such
basic elements as: artist, title, date, medium, dimensions. You should also
describe
the work’s composition
subject matter materials and technique. This
should serve as the introductory section/paragraph(s) of your essay.
At this point you will need to research on the artist, the work, the movement and
the dominant ideas of the time in which it was created. You will also need to think
about what types of theoretical concerns might have been in the artist’s mind
when he created these images. For example, is the artist reacting to the past in
terms of such ideas as appropriation? Is she/he thinking about the notion of
identity, politics, gender, place, etc.?
For example, let’s say that you feel your
work is about Identity. In that case, you will need to do some research on the
concept of identity itself. You might, therefore, first want to talk about the very
nature of identity: Is the self a unified entity (for example, Descartes vs. Merleau-
Pony and/or Lacan)? Or, for example, what is the relationship between identity
and gender?
Since this is an advanced level course, the idea of the paper is to help you learn
how to integrate theoretical concepts with the works of art themselves. This is not
an easy task so you will need to start to think about your subject early on in the
semester. I am here to help you work out your ideas and in fact, you must check
with me before you begin to work on your essay.
The paper will be due the last day of class and should be approximately ten
pages in length (double-spaced, 12 pt.) and should contain citations that are
properly formatted in either MLA or Chicago style and must also contain a

Unbeknownst to many people, he started creating The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations Millennium General Assembly sometime after World War II in a rented garage in preparation for the second coming of Jesus Christ. Introduction
We think of our societies as ‘knowledge societies’ in which lifelong learning is
becoming increasingly important. Lifelong learning refers to the idea that people
not only learn in schools and universities, but also in non-formal and informal
ways during their lifespan.The concepts of lifelong learning and lifelong education
began to enter the discourse on educational policies in the late 1960s (Tuijnman
& Boström, 2002). However, these are related, but distinct concepts. As Lee (2014,
p. 472) notes ‘the terminological change (from lifelong education, continuing
education and adult education, to lifelong learning) reflects a conceptual departure
from the idea of organised educational provision to that of a more individualised
pursuit of learning’.
One of the first important documents on lifelong learning was the report of the
International Commission on the Development of Education to UNESCO in
1972, titled ‘Learning to be. The world of education today and tomorrow’. In his
introductory letter to the Director-General of UNESCO, the chairman of the
Commission, Edgar Faure, stated that the work of the Commission was based on
four assumptions (see Elfert pp. and Carneiro pp. in this issue). The first was
related to the idea that there was an international community which was united by
common aspirations and the second was the belief in democracy and in education
as its keystones. The third was ‘that the aim of development is the complete
fulfilment of man, in all the richness of his personality, the complexity of his forms
of expression and his various commitments — as individual, member of a family
and of a community, citizen and producer, inventor of techniques and creative
dreamer’. The last assumption was that ‘only an over-all, lifelong education can
produce the kind of complete man, the need for whom is increasing with the
continually more stringent constraints tearing the individual asunder’ (Faure,
1972, p. vi).
Following the Faure Report, the UNESCO Institute for Education, which
was founded in Germany in 1951, started to focus on lifelong learning and
subsequently became the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL, http://
uil.unesco.org/home/). It was under its leadership that a formal model of lifelong
education was developed and published in the book ‘Towards a System of Life-
long Education’ (Cropley, 1980). The concept of lifelong learning also became
manifest in the ‘Education for All’ (EFA) agenda that was launched at the World
Conference on Education for All which took place in Jomtien (Thailand) in
1990 (Inter-Agency Commission, 1990). Ten years later, at the World Education
Forum in Dakar (Senegal) in 2000, the Dakar Framework for Action was
designed ‘to enable all individuals to realize their right to learn and to fulfil their
responsibility to contribute to the development of their society’ (UNESCO,

Base Salary Range
For the position of VP of Operations, the National Average Salary is $122,624. In San Francisco, the average is higher and placed at $155,946. This amount is 16% higher than the National Average (Payscale, 2016). The reason for this increase is because of experience and geography. These are the two prime factors that impact the pay scale. Another major factor is the employer. Most employers base their decision to hire an individual on the experience they bring with them. Of course, with more experience, higher pay is required. With our company cutting cost a less experienced individual would be the best fit for the position.
Standard Employee Benefit
In many cases, your employee benefits could be the turning point for a prospective employee. This benefit is a vital portion of any employee packet. These valuable benefits are used as a blanket of security in the case of any sickness, injury, unemployment, old age, or death (Gomez-Mejia, Balkin & Cardy, 2015, p. 362). There is a significant difference between incentives and benefits: benefits are financial and nonfinancial compensations that are indirect to the employee. To have a competitive strategy Blossoms Up! must align their profits with the compensation package that has been already put in place. This action will help provide flexibility to the amount and the benefits available (Gomez-Mejia et al., 2015).
There are also some benefits that most companies are legally obligated to provide. Three benefits are required regardless of the number of employees that the company has. These interests involve social security, workers compensation, and unemployment insurance (Gomez-Mejia et al., 2015). Other laws must be adhered to when dealing with a certain number of individuals. When a company has 50 or more employee they must have the Family and Medical Leave Act in place and since its induction in 2015 the Affordable Care Act for Health Insurance for companies with 20 or more employees. For the health insurance to be considered standard medical, vision and dental plans must be made available to the business. These programs that must be regarded as being under the Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) or a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) (Gomez-Mejia et al., 2015).
There are some voluntary benefits that we can include. We are already looking into adding a pension package using the Defined Contribution Plan as well as the 401(K) plan (Gomez-Mejia et al., 2015). Life insurance is another excellent benefit that could be added to the package as well as short-term and long-term disability insurance. Adding Vacation and PTO, and Holiday pay is .

Evaluate the current compensation philosophy for your organization or an organization of your choosing (from a third-person perspective). Evaluate the organization’s current compensation philosophy and propose ways to enhance or revamp the current compensation philosophy to meet the changing needs of the organization and its employees.
Examine key factors within the internal and external environment including the mission and strategic focus of the organization, as well as the financial and cultural aspects of your organization (i.e., they cannot have a compensation philosophy where they “lead” the market if the organization does not have the financial resources) that should influence this philosophy. The proposed philosophy itself should be no more than a short paragraph.
Identify the key factors that should contribute to the organization’s development based on your proposed organizational philosophy.
Remember to write from a third-person perspective. Do not include wording like “my company’s philosophy is …” Instead include wording like “XYZ Company Name’s philosophy is …” Remember to write about the company and the company’s philosophy; do not refer to you or your connection to the company.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
