This document compares servant leadership styles between Jesus Christ and modern concepts. It finds that while there are similarities in priorities like serving followers, modern servant leadership is missing key components like witnessing one's faith and transforming society. An effective leadership model incorporates Jesus' leadership qualities like maintaining integrity, inspiring service to a higher purpose, and cultivating disciples to transform people and society.
Servant Leadership is a cornerstone principle of the Solstice culture. When engrained and celebrated in a business it creates a collaborative, dynamic environment that people love to be a part of. This is a presentation I recently gave to our staff on the qualities of a Servant Leader. I wanted to share it with the broader business community. Enjoy and would love to hear any additional insights in the comments below.

In today’s world, rules and regulations to control behaviors are no longer effective ways to run a company. Results are produced by employees who are driven and inspired by their leaders and peers to do the right thing and make the right decision; and those who do not work just for the pay but for their ability to achieve.
Many leadership articles and talent management trainings have now begun to focus on inspirational leadership. It is believed that companies/teams are more engaged and function more effectively with inspiring leaders (with or without official titles). In the process, employees become more engaged, a trait that transcends other areas of their lives including community involvement.
For the past five years, Mike Haddad, president and CEO of Schreiber Foods, has been inspiring 7,000+ partners by abiding by principles of inspirational leadership. He will share his experience of inspiring others and the journey he’s taken to become an inspiration leader not only in the corporate world but also in the community.
This slide deck covers a typical one day authentic leadership development day that we deliver at the Antwerp Management School. Topics like trust, politics, power, authenticity, shared leadership, transformational leadership , implicit leadership theories, cross cultural differences in leadership, etc are covered
This presentation talks of Servant Leadership - the origins of Servant leadership, the characteristics of a Servant leader and the qualities of a Servant Leader
More than experience or training, resilience in the face of stressful situations and rapid changes determines whether you ultimately succeed or fail in the workplace. Learn the key skills involved in increasing resilience, and the four types of presence you must cultivate.

Karen’s’ Post- Reply 1
Ethics in Leadership: According to our text, “ethics are the values, morals, and basic principles that an individual uses to decide between right and wrong”, and more importantly, exhibiting high moral principles when no one is looking (Satterlee, 2012, p. 112). Especially important is the moral character of a good leader which is evident not just on the job, but in everything he or she sets out to do. When a person lives by a code of ethics, it is evident in that person’s behavior and actions and their superiors, co-workers, employees, family, and even with their interactions with a total stranger. You cannot hide who you truly are.
On a weekly basis we hear reports of government officials, corporation heads, and business men being charged with crimes associated with embezzlement, bribes, and kickbacks. Just this week, the ex-mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin, received a ten year prison sentence for accepting bribes and kickbacks from contractors who were hired to rebuild the hurricane ravaged area of Louisiana. “Prosecutors argued the 57-year-old Nagin was the center of a kickback scheme in which he received checks, cash, wire transfers, personal services and free travel from businessmen seeking contracts and favorable treatment from the city” (Smith & Hackney, 2014). A city and its people who had suffered such a tragedy and loss of life, already beaten down from the hurricane, were being run by an individual who did not have their best interest at heart.
Individuals in a leadership role represent a position of trust and integrity both to the owners of the company as well as the employees who work for that company. A violation of trust can destroy a company’s reputation as well as its worth in the eyes of the public and its stockholders. The Enron scandal is another example of poor leadership and management, and a total lack of ethical moral character of those in leadership. Employees lost millions of dollars in retirement, and were forced to sale their homes and exhaust their savings to survive the loss suffered when the truth was exposed of the mismanagement of Enron.
The moral failures of successful and once ethical-minded leaders have sometimes been referred to as the ‘Bathsheba syndrome’ (Ciulla, 2004). King David’s desire to cover-up his sin with Bathsheba, caused him to put Uriah in harms-way by ordering him to the front line of battle, which gets Uriah killed. History has continued to repeat itself with scandals ranging from Watergate to President Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, all following the general pattern of this story. Because those in power have unlimited access to whatever their hearts desire, leaders have more opportunities to indulge themselves, which requires them to resist even more temptation to make wrong choices and decisions.
Our text references different scriptures that speak to the foundation of a person of good moral character and of ethical mor ...

Key Term: Robert Greenleaf (Servant Leadership)
Definition
“Greenleaf, was CEO of AT&T [over 30] years ago, lecturer and teacher at Harvard and MIT, and author of
Servant Leadership
” (Gebhart, 1995)
Summary
Robert Greenleaf is best thought of as a revolutionary thinker in terms of how to lead others in both business and the community. “The emphasis in servant leadership theory is on leaders whose primary aim is to serve their followers while developing employees to their fullest potential in different areas such as task effectiveness, community stewardship, self-motivation, and also the development of their leadership capabilities.” (Dierendonck & Patterson, 2015, p. 119)
In today’s workplace, Greenleaf is often quoted and the inspiration for leading people in a way that brings about positive results. Greenleaf’s theory was relatively unproved until years later by a few scholars. These scholars conducted several studies to determine the true results of the relationship of servant-leaders and their direct reports in the workplace.
Discussion
In 1977, Greenleaf published a theory about how extraordinary leaders develop the desire to serve others before themselves. This trait in and of itself is what is called Servant Leadership. Servant-leaders do all that they can to provide the highest need of those they are leading before fulfilling their own needs. This theory of leadership is not a short-term solution for problems in the company. Servant leadership has been described “as including an altruistic calling, which is the motivation of leaders to put others’ needs and interests ahead of their own, and organizational stewardship, which is orienting others toward benefiting and serving the community.” (Dierendonck & Patterson, 2015, p. 119) Greenleaf has stressed the need to genuinely show concern for other people, businesses and communities altogether.
There is a “deep connection between servant leadership and compassionate love with the outgrowths of humility, gratitude, forgiveness and .
Though there are many theories and models of nonprofit leadership, it is servant leadership that most closely follows the leadership example of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2. Jesus Christ as Servant Leader
Vs. Greenleaf's Servant Leader
• What is servant leadership
• What are the similarities between Jesus’s
and the apostils leadership and modern
servant leadership
• What are the differences between
Jesus’s and the apostils leadership and
modern servant leadership
3. Servant Leadership (SL)
• Servant leadership (SL)is where the leader places more focus on the
follower’s needs and desires in order to serve the follower first. The
leader adjusts their attitudes and behaviors to be in focus with their
followers. According to Patterson , “Servant leadership is a virtuous
theory” (Patterson 2003, p. 2). A virtue is a characteristic of moral
excellence that a person exemplifies within their internal self that is
reflected in their actions.
• [Servant leadership] begins with the natural feeling that one wants to
serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to
lead…. The difference manifests itself in the are taken by the servant-
first to make sure that other people’s highest priority needs are being
served. The best test…. is: do those served grow as persons; do they,
while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous,
more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on
the least privileged in society; will they benefit, or , at least, will they
not be further deprived? (Greenleaf, 1970 p.15)
4. Similarities
• Right identity – seeing oneself as a servant
• Right method – relating to others in a positive
manner
• Right impact – inspiring others to serve a higher
purpose
• Right Motivation- Serving God by serving others
5. 1.Similarities
10 CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE SERVANT LEADERSHIP
Listening
Empathy
Healing
Awareness
Persuasion
Conceptualization
Foresight
Stewardship
Commitment to the growth of people
Building community (Spears 2010, p.25).
6 Pillars of Character
Trustworthiness
Respect
Responsibility
Fairness
Caring
Citizenship (Spears 2010, p.25).
6. Differences
1. Right character – maintaining integrity and authenticity (Davey,
Wong 2007 p. 7-8).
2. Witness based leadership- leaders participating in the suffering
of Christ 1 Peter 5:9
1. By removing witnessing from SL we introduce leadership from a
worldly perspective lacking Christ's humanity (Niewold 2007, p.
126).
3. SL of today reduces faith to ethics, neglecting the holy spirit
within us.
1. Reducing faith to ethics helps dis-form society rather than
transforming society to the Christian faith
7. Conclusion
• Servant leadership is similar to Christ’s and the Apostil’s leadership
styles. Greenleaf’s Servant leadership is missing a few key
components. An effective means of leadership is to incorporate all these
aspects into Servant leadership.
• Witness publically where our leadership style and love comes from
• Right motivation- serving God by serving others
• Right identity – seeing oneself as a servant
• Right method – relating to others in a positive manner
• Right impact – inspiring others to serve a higher purpose
• Right character – maintaining integrity and authenticity (Davey, Wong
2007 p. 7-8)
• Transform Society by transforming people into disciples.
