Earlier, a simple dynamic equivalent for a power system external area containing a group of coherent generators was proposed in the literature. This equivalent is based on a new concept of decomposition of generators and a two-level generator aggregation. With the knowledge of only the passive network model of the external area and the total inertia constant of all the generators in this area, the parameters of this equivalent are determinable from a set of measurement data taken solely at a set of boundary buses which separates this area from the rest of the system. The proposed equivalent, therefore, does not require any measurement data at the external area generators. This is an important feature of this equivalent. In this paper, the results of a comparative study on the performance of this dynamic equivalent aggregation with the new inertial aggregation in terms of accuracy are presented. The three test systems that were considered in this comparative investigation are the New England 39-bus 10-generator system, the IEEE 162-bus 17-generator system and the IEEE 145-bus 50-generator system.

Comparison of backstepping, sliding mode and PID regulators for a voltage inv...IJECEIAES
In the present paper, an efficient and performant nonlinear regulator is designed for the control of the pulse width modulation (PWM) voltage inverter that can be used in a standalone photovoltaic microgrid. The main objective of our control is to produce a sinusoidal voltage output signal with amplitude and frequency that are fixed by the reference signal for different loads including linear or nonlinear types. A comparative performance study of controllers based on linear and non-linear techniques such as backstepping, sliding mode, and proportional integral derivative (PID) is developed to ensure the best choice among these three types of controllers. The performance of the system is investigated and compared under various operating conditions by simulations in the MATLAB/Simulink environment to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control methods. Our investigation shows that the backstepping controller can give better performance than the sliding mode and PID controllers. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed backstepping controller are verified experimentally in terms of tracking objectives.

The main goal of this paper is to formulate power system state estimation (SE) problem as a constrained nonlinear programming problem with various constraints and boundary limits on the state variables. SE forms the heart of entire real time control of any power system. In real time environment, the state estimator consists of various modules like observability analysis, network topology processing, SE and bad data processing. The SE problem formulated in this work is solved using teaching leaning-based optimization (TLBO) technique. Difference between the proposed TLBO and the conventional optimization algorithms is that TLBO gives global optimum solution for the present problem. To show the suitability of TLBO for solving SE problem, IEEE 14 bus test system has been selected in this work. The results obtained with TLBO are also compared with conventional weighted least square (WLS) technique and evolutionary based particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique.

Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is one of the essential controller operations of any Photo-Voltaic (PV) cell design. Developing an efficient MPPT system includes a significant challenge as there are various forms of uncertainty factors that results in higher degree of fluctuation in current and voltage in PV cell. After reviewing existing system, it has been found that there is no presence of any benchmarked model to ensure a better form of computational model. Hence, this paper presents a novel and very simple design of MPPT without using any form of complex design mechanism nor including any form of frequently used iterative approach. The proposed model is completely focused on developing an algorithm that takes the input of voltage (open circuit), current (short circuit), and max power in order to obtain the peak power to be extracted from the PV cells. The study outcome shows faster response time and better form of analysis of current-voltage-power for given state of PV cells.
A novel method for determining fixed running time in operating electric train...IJECEIAES
Tracking the optimal speed profile in electric train operation has been proposed as a potential solution for reducing energy consumption in electric train operation, at no cost to improve infrastructure of existing Metro lines as well. However, the optimal speed profile needs to meet fixed running time. Therefore, this paper focuses on a new method for determining the fixed running time complied with the scheduled timetable when trains track the optimal speed profile. The novel method to ensure the fixed running time is the numerical-analytical one. Calculating accelerating time ta, coasting time tc, braking time tb via values of holding speed vh, braking speed vb of optimal speed profile with the constraint condition: the running time equal to the demand time. The other hands, vh and vb are determined by solving nonlinear equations with constraint conditions. Additionally, changing running time suit for each operation stage of metro lines or lines starting to conduct schedules by the numerical-analytical method is quite easy. Simulation results obtained for two scenarios with data collected from electrified trains of Cat Linh-Ha Dong metro line, Vietnam show that running time complied with scheduled timetables, energy saving by tracking optimal speed profile for the entire route is up to 8.7%, if the running time is one second longer than original time, energy saving is about 11.96%.
Comparison of cascade P-PI controller tuning methods for PMDC motor based on ...IJECEIAES
In this paper, there are two contributions: The first contribution is to design a robust cascade P-PI controller to control the speed and position of the permanent magnet DC motor (PMDC). The second contribution is to use three methods to tuning the parameter values for this cascade controller by making a comparison between them to obtain the best results to ensure accurate tracking trajectory on the axis to reach the desired position. These methods are the classical method (CM) and it requires some assumptions, the genetic algorithm (GA), and the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO). The simulation results show the system becomes unstable after applying the load when using the classical method because it assumes cancellation of the load effect. Also, an overshoot of about 3.763% is observed, and a deviation from the desired position of about 12.03 degrees is observed when using the GA algorithm, while no deviation or overshoot is observed when using the PSO algorithm. Therefore, the PSO algorithm has superiority as compared to the other two methods in improving the performance of the PMDC motor by extracting the best parameters for the cascade P-PI controller to reach the desired position at a regular speed.

The amount of shedding power of each load bus is distributed based on the load importance factor. Neuron network is applied to distribute load shedding strategies in the power system at different load levels. The experimental and simulated results on the IEEE 37- bus system present the frequency can restore to allowed range and reduce the damage compared to the traditional load shedding method using under frequency relay- UFLS.

The increased size of modern power systems
demand faster and accurate means for the security assessment,
so that the decisions for reliable and secure operation planning
could be drawn in a systematic manner. Large computational
overhead is the major impediment in preventing the power
system security assessment (PSSA) from on-line use. To
mitigate this problem, this paper proposes, a cluster computing
based architecture for power system static security assessment,
utilizing the tools in the open source domain. A variant of the
master/slave pattern is used for deploying the cluster of
workstations (COW), which act as the computational engine
for the on-line PSSA. The security assessment is performed
utilizing the developed composite security index that can
accurately differentiate the secure and non-secure cases and
has been defined as a function of bus voltage and line flow
limit violations. Due to the inherent parallel structure of
security assessment algorithm and to exploit the potential of
distributed computing, domain decomposition is employed for
parallelizing the sequential algorithm. Extensive
experimentations were carried out on IEEE 57 bus and IEEE
145-bus 50 machine standard test systems for demonstrating
the validity of the proposed architecture.
Fuzzy and predictive control of a photovoltaic pumping system based on three-...journalBEEI
In this work, an efficient control scheme for a double stage pumping system is proposed. On the DC side, a three-level boost converter is employed to maximize the photovoltaic power and to step-up the DC-link voltage. For maximum power point tracking, the classical incremental conductance method is substituted by a fuzzy logic controller. The designed controller estimates the optimal step size which speeds up the tracking process and improves the accuracy of the extracted photovoltaic power. Afterwards, the voltages across the three-level boost converter (TLBC) capacitors are balanced by phase shifting the applied duty ratios. On the motor pump side, a two-level inverter drives the motor pump with the cascaded nonlinear predictive control. The predictive controller is preferred over the conventional field-oriented control because it accelerates the torque response and resists to the change of the engine parameters. The designed controllers are evaluated using MATLAB/Simulink, and compared with the conventional controllers (incremental conductance algorithm and field-oriented control). The robust control scheme of the entire system has increased the hydraulic power by up to 23% during the system start-up and up to 10% in steady state.
Optimization of Modified Sliding Mode Controller for an Electro-hydraulic Act...IJECEIAES
This paper presents the design of the modified sliding mode controller (MSMC) for the purpose of tracking the nonlinear system with mismatched disturbance. Provided that the performance of the designed controller depends on the value of control parameters, gravitational search algorithm (GSA), and particle swarm optimization (PSO) techniques are used to optimize these parameters in order to achieve a predefined system’s performance. In respect of system’s performance, it is evaluated based on the tracking error present between reference inputs transferred to the system and the system output. This is followed by verification of the efficiency of the designed controller in simulation environment under various values, with and without the inclusion of external disturbance. It can be seen from the simulation results that the MSMC with PSO exhibits a better performance in comparison to the performance of the similar controller with GSA in terms of output response and tracking error.

This paper is an extension of our previous work, which discussed the
difficulty in implementing different methods of resistance emulation
techniques on the hardware due to its control constant estimation delay. In
order to get rid of the delay this paper attempts to include the meta-heuristic
methods for the control constants of the controller. To achieve the minimum
Total Harmonic Disturbance (THD) in the AC side of the converter modern
meta-heuristic methods are compared with the traditional methods. The
convergence parameters, which are primary for the earlier estimation of the
control constants, are compared with the measured parameters, tabulated and
tradeoff inference is done among the methods. This kind of implementation
does not need the mathematical model of the system under study for finding
the control constants. The parameters considered for estimation are
population size, maximum number of epochs, and global best solution of the
control constants, best THD value and execution time. MatlabTM /Simulink
based simulation is optimized with the M-file based optimization techniques
like Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Cuckoo
Search Algorithm, Gravity Search Algorithm, Harmony Search Algorithm

Power system is subjected to sudden changes in load levels. Stability is an important concept
which determines the stable operation of power system. For the improvement of transient stability the
general methods adopted are fast acting exciters, circuit breakers and reduction in system transfer
reactance. The modern trend is to employ FACTS devices in the existing system for effective utilization
of existing transmission resources. The critical clearing time is a measure to assess transient instability.
Using PSAT, the critical clearing time (CCT) corresponding to various faults are calculated. The most
critical faults were identified using this calculation. The CCT for the critical faults were found to change
with change in operating point. The CCT values are predicted using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to
study the training effects of ANN. TCSC is selected as the FACTS device for transient stability
enhancement. Particle Swarm Optimization method is used to find the optimal position of TCSC using
the objective function real power loss minimization. The result shows that the technique effectively
increases the transient stability of the system

Fuzzy and predictive control of a photovoltaic pumping system based on three-...journalBEEI
In this work, an efficient control scheme for a double stage pumping system is proposed. On the DC side, a three-level boost converter is employed to maximize the photovoltaic power and to step-up the DC-link voltage. For maximum power point tracking, the classical incremental conductance method is substituted by a fuzzy logic controller. The designed controller estimates the optimal step size which speeds up the tracking process and improves the accuracy of the extracted photovoltaic power. Afterwards, the voltages across the three-level boost converter (TLBC) capacitors are balanced by phase shifting the applied duty ratios. On the motor pump side, a two-level inverter drives the motor pump with the cascaded nonlinear predictive control. The predictive controller is preferred over the conventional field-oriented control because it accelerates the torque response and resists to the change of the engine parameters. The designed controllers are evaluated using MATLAB/Simulink, and compared with the conventional controllers (incremental conductance algorithm and field-oriented control). The robust control scheme of the entire system has increased the hydraulic power by up to 23% during the system start-up and up to 10% in steady state.
Optimization of Modified Sliding Mode Controller for an Electro-hydraulic Act...IJECEIAES
This paper presents the design of the modified sliding mode controller (MSMC) for the purpose of tracking the nonlinear system with mismatched disturbance. Provided that the performance of the designed controller depends on the value of control parameters, gravitational search algorithm (GSA), and particle swarm optimization (PSO) techniques are used to optimize these parameters in order to achieve a predefined system’s performance. In respect of system’s performance, it is evaluated based on the tracking error present between reference inputs transferred to the system and the system output. This is followed by verification of the efficiency of the designed controller in simulation environment under various values, with and without the inclusion of external disturbance. It can be seen from the simulation results that the MSMC with PSO exhibits a better performance in comparison to the performance of the similar controller with GSA in terms of output response and tracking error.

This paper is an extension of our previous work, which discussed the
difficulty in implementing different methods of resistance emulation
techniques on the hardware due to its control constant estimation delay. In
order to get rid of the delay this paper attempts to include the meta-heuristic
methods for the control constants of the controller. To achieve the minimum
Total Harmonic Disturbance (THD) in the AC side of the converter modern
meta-heuristic methods are compared with the traditional methods. The
convergence parameters, which are primary for the earlier estimation of the
control constants, are compared with the measured parameters, tabulated and
tradeoff inference is done among the methods. This kind of implementation
does not need the mathematical model of the system under study for finding
the control constants. The parameters considered for estimation are
population size, maximum number of epochs, and global best solution of the
control constants, best THD value and execution time. MatlabTM /Simulink
based simulation is optimized with the M-file based optimization techniques
like Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Cuckoo
Search Algorithm, Gravity Search Algorithm, Harmony Search Algorithm

Transient Stability Assessment and Enhancement in Power SystemIJMER
Power system is subjected to sudden changes in load levels. Stability is an important concept
which determines the stable operation of power system. For the improvement of transient stability the
general methods adopted are fast acting exciters, circuit breakers and reduction in system transfer
reactance. The modern trend is to employ FACTS devices in the existing system for effective utilization
of existing transmission resources. The critical clearing time is a measure to assess transient instability.
Using PSAT, the critical clearing time (CCT) corresponding to various faults are calculated. The most
critical faults were identified using this calculation. The CCT for the critical faults were found to change
with change in operating point. The CCT values are predicted using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to
study the training effects of ANN. TCSC is selected as the FACTS device for transient stability
enhancement. Particle Swarm Optimization method is used to find the optimal position of TCSC using
the objective function real power loss minimization. The result shows that the technique effectively
increases the transient stability of the system

Abstract This paper investigates the use of Discrete Linear Quadratic Gaussian (DLQG) Compensator to damp sub synchronous oscillations in a Thyrisor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) compensated power system. The study is conducted on IEEE First Benchmark Model (FBM) in which, TCSC is modelled as a discrete linear time-invariant modular unit in the synchronously rotating DQ reference frame. This modular TCSC is then integrated with the Linear Time Invariant (LTI) model of the rest of the system. The design of DLQG includes the design of a Kalman filter for full state estimation and a full state feedback for control. Since the order of the controller is as large as the order of the system considered here(27 states), the practical implementation of the controller is difficult. Hence by using Hankels norm approximation technique, the order of the controller is reduced from 27 to 15 without losing the significant system dynamics. The eigen analysis of the system shows that the use of DLQG can damp torsional oscillations as well as the swing mode oscillations simultaneously, which is practically difficult for a conventional sub-synchronous damping controller. The performance of the system with DLQG is appreciable for all operating conditions and it shows the robustness of the controller. Despite all the model predictive control (MPC) based solution advantages such as a guarantee of stability, the main disadvantage such as an exponential growth of the number of the polyhedral region by increasing the prediction horizon exists. This causes the increment in computation complexity of control law. In this paper, we present the efficiency of particle swarm optimization (PSO) in optimal control of a two-tank system modeled as piece- wise affine. The solution of the constrained final time-optimal control problem (CFTOC) is derived, and then the PSO algorithm is used to reduce the computational complexity of the control law and set the physical parameters of the system to improve performance simultaneously. On the other hand, a new combined algorithm based on PSO is going to be used to reduce the complexity of explicit MPC-based solution CFTOC of the two-tank system; consequently, that the number of polyhedral is minimized, and system performance is more desirable simultaneously. The proposed algorithm is applied in simulation and our desired subjects are reached. The number of control law polyhedral reduces from 42 to 10 and the liquid height in both tanks reaches the desired certain value in 189 seconds. Search time and apply control law in 25 seconds.
In power engineering the power flow analysis (also known as load flow study) is an important tool involving numerical analysis applied to a powe r system. This project deals with a model of existing power system using the actual data taking care of all parameters required for the simulation and analysis. With the help of Maharasht ra State Electricity Transmission co. Ltd.,a model of 220KV lines,of Solapur District grid usin g MATLAB software will be modeled. In this project,an algorithm will be used for power f low study and data collection and coding required for modeling. Load flow studies will be ca rried out using Newton Raphson method and voltage profile of buses will be analyzed. New meth od for the improvement of voltage profile will be suggested and analyze using the developed m odel. The optimization techniques include power factor compensation,tap changing,up gradati on of substation,up gradation of line and load shifting will be analyzed. Importance of power flow or Load flow studies is in planning future expansion of power system as well as determi ning the best operation of existing systems. From results of simulation buses with low voltage p rofile will be identified and possible solutions can be suggested.

Transient stability affected by renewable energy sources integration due to reductions of system inertia and uncertainties associated with the expected generation. The ability to manage relation between the available big data and transient stability assessment (TSA) enables fast and accurate monitoring of TSA to prepare the required actions for secure operation. This work aims to build a predictive model using Gaussian process regression for online TSA utilizing selected features. The critical fault clearing time (CCT) is used as TSA index. The selected features map the system dynamics to reduce the burden of data collection and the computation time. The required data were collected offline from power flow calculations at different operating conditions. Therefore, CCT was calculated using electromagnetic transient simulation at each operating point by applying self-clearance three phase short circuit at prespecified locations. The features selection was implemented using the neighborhood component analysis, the Minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance algorithm, and K-means clustering algorithm. The vulnerability of selected features tends to result great variation on the best features from the three methods. Hybrid collection of the best common features was used to enhance the TSA by refining the final selected features. The proposed model was investigated over 66-bus system.

Open-Switch Fault-Tolerant Control of a Grid-Side Converter in a Wind Power G...IJPEDS-IAES
A fault-tolerant technique of a grid-side converter (GSC) is a very important
task because the unbalanced grid power endangers the overall system. Since
the GSC is very sensitive to grid disturbance, the complete system needs to
be stopped suddenly once an open-switch fault occurs. To improve the
reliability of system, the continuous operation should be guaranteed. In this
paper, a redundant topology based fault-tolerant algorithm is proposed for a
GSC in a wind power generation system. The proposed scheme consists of
the fault detection and fault-tolerant algorithms. The fault detection
algorithm employs the durations of positive and negaitive cycles of threephase
grid currents as well as normalized root mean square (RMS) currents.
Once a fault is detected, the corresponding faulty phase is identified and
isolated to enable the fault-tolerant operation. The faulty phase is replaced by
redundant one rapidly to recover the original shape of the grid currents,
which ensures the continuity in operation. In contrast with the conventional
methods, the proposed fault detection and fault-tolerant algorithms work
effectively even in the presence of the open faults in multiple switches in the
GSC. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed fault
diagnosis and fault-tolerant control algorithms.
In this paper, a detail design and description of a predictive current control scheme are adopted for three-phase grid-connected two-level inverter and its application in wind energy conversion systems. Despite its advantages, the predictive current controller is very sensitive to parameter variations which could eventually affected on system stability. To solve this problem, an estimation technique proposed to identify the value of harmonic filter parameter based on Model reference adaptive system (MRAS). Lyapunov stability theory is selected to guarantee a robust adaptation and stable response over large system parameter variation. The simulation results shows the efficiency of the proposed techniques to improve the current tracking performance.
Identification study of solar cell/module using recent optimization techniquesIJECEIAES
This paper proposes the application of a novel metaphor-free population optimization based on the mathematics of the Runge Kutta method (RUN) for parameter extraction of a double-diode model of the unknown solar cell and photovoltaic (PV) module parameters. The RUN optimizer is employed to determine the seven unknown parameters of the two-diode model. Fitting the experimental data is the main objective of the extracted unknown parameters to develop a generic PV model. Consequently, the root means squared error (RMSE) between the measured and estimated data is considered as the primary objective function. The suggested objective function achieves the closeness degree between the estimated and experimental data. For getting the generic model, applications of the proposed RUN are carried out on two different commercial PV cells. To assess the proposed algorithm, a comprehensive comparison study is employed and compared with several well-matured optimization algorithms reported in the literature. Numerical simulations prove the high precision and fast response of the proposed RUN algorithm for solving multiple PV models. Added to that, the RUN can be considered as a good alternative optimization method for solving power systems optimization problems.

This paper presents a methodology for estimating the normalized transient stability margin by using the multilayered perceptron (MLP) neural network. The complex relationship between the input variables and output variables is established by using the neural networks. The nonlinear mapping relation between the normalized transient stability margin and the operating conditions of the power system is established by using the MLP neural network. To obtain the training set of the neural network the potential energy boundary surface (PEBS) method along with time domain simulation method is used. The proposed method is applied on IEEE 9 bus system and the results shows that the proposed method provides fast and accurate tool to assess online transient stability.

This allowed eliminating additional pumps, and significantly reducing tThis paper solves an optimal reactive power scheduling problem in the deregulated power system using the evolutionary based Cuckoo Search Algorithm (CSA). Reactive power scheduling is a very important problem in the power system operation, which is a nonlinear and mixed integer programming problem. It optimizes a specific objective function while satisfying all the equality and inequality constraints. In this paper, CSA is used to determine the optimal settings of control variables such as generator voltages, transformer tap positions and the amount of reactive compensation required to optimize the certain objective functions. The CSA algorithm has been developed from the inspiration that the obligate brood parasitism of some Cuckoo species lay their eggs in nests of other host birds which are of other species. The performance of CSA for solving the proposed optimal reactive power scheduling problem is examined on standard Ward Hale 6 bus, IEEE 30 bus, 57 bus, 118 bus and 300 bus test systems. The simulation results show that the proposed approach is more suitable, effective and efficient compared to other optimization techniques presented in the literature.he size of CSD. According to the results of our study, we created an experimental full capacity layout, and its studies are also provided in this paper.

manner reflecting its behaviour in the real system, performance of classical controller and self-adjusting fuzzy
logic controller in electro-hydraulic governor circuit was examined according to different load statuses. During
the simulation works carried out when both control systems closely watched in the fuzzy logic control system
according to different loads the frequency of load and the number of frequency have been observed to be stable
in short period of time and allowed tolerance limits.

This paper develops an adaptive control coordination scheme for power system stabilizers (PSSs)
to improve the oscillation damping and dynamic performance of interconnected multimachine power
system. The scheme was based on the use of a neural network which identifies online the optimal
controller parameters. The inputs to the neural network include the active- and reactive- power of the
synchronous generators which represent the power loading on the system, and elements of the reduced
nodal impedance matrix for representing the power system configuration. The outputs of the neural
network were the parameters of the PSSs which lead to optimal oscillation damping for the prevailing
system configuration and operating condition. For a representative power system, the neural network has
been trained and tested for a wide range of credible operating conditions and contingencies. Both
eigenvalue calculations and time-domain simulations were used in the testing and verification of the
performance of the neural network-based stabilizer.

In power system, as any inequality between production and consumption results in an instantaneous change in frequency from nominal, frequency should be always monitored and controlled. Traditionally, frequency regulation is provided by varying the power output of generators which have restricted ramp rates. The Automatic Generation Control AGC process performs the task of adjusting system generation to meet the load demand and of regulating the large system frequency changes. A result of the mismatches between system load and system generation, system frequency and the desired value of 50 Hz is the accumulation of time error. How equilibrium system frequency is calculated if load parameters are frequency dependent, and how can frequency be controlled. Also, how do parameters of a speed governor affect generated power. The transient processes before system frequency settles down to steady state. Finally, AGC in what way is it different from governor action. This paper presents new approaches for AGC of power system including two areas having one steam turbines and one hydro turbine tied together through power lines.

Unlike conventional active sonar, that transmits the sound signals and revealing their presence and position to enemy forces. The probable advantage of passive sonar is that it detects the signals emitted by the target, leads to improve localization, target tracking, and categorization. The challenging aspect is to estimate the true bearing and frequency measurements from the noisy measurements of the target. Here in this paper, it is recommended for the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) to track the target by using these noisy measurements. The Target Motion Analysis (TMA), which is the way to find the target’s trajectory by using frequency and bearing measurements, is explored. This method provides a tactical advantage over the classical bearing only tracking target motion analysis. It makes the observer maneuver unnecessary.

We want to know, what is the effect of initiation point on Rikitake system? Numerical simulations to illustrate the effect of initiation point are presented, and at the end conclusions and comparing the states together are obtained.
Optimization of Economic Load Dispatch with Unit Commitment on Multi MachineIJAPEJOURNAL
Economic load dispatch (ELD) and Unit Commitment (UC) are significant research applications in power systems that optimize the total production cost of the predicted load demand. The UC problem determines a turn-on and turn-off schedule for a given combination of generating units, thus satisfying a set of dynamic operational constraints. ELD optimizes the operation cost for all scheduled generating units with respect to the load demands of customers. The first phase in this project is to economically schedule the distribution of generating units using Gauss seidal and the second phase is to determine optimal load distribution for the scheduled units using dynamic programming method is applied to select and choose the combination of generating units that commit and de-commit during each hour. These precommitted schedules are optimized by dynamic programming method thus producing a global optimum solution with feasible and effective solution quality, minimal cost and time and higher precision. The effectiveness of the proposed techniques is investigated on two test systems consisting of five generating units and the experiments are carried out using MATLAB R2010b software. Experimental results prove that the proposed method is capable of yielding higher quality solution including mathematical simplicity, fast convergence, diversity maintenance, robustness and scalability for the complex ELD-UC problem.
Impact of Buried Conductor Length on Computation of Earth Grid ResistanceIJAPEJOURNAL
Effective design of substation earth grid implies achieving low earth grid resistance and fulfillment of the safety criteria at the lowest possible cost. This paper presents an evaluation of IEEE Standard 80-2000 Equations 50 to 52 to determine the impact of buried conductor length on computation of earth grid resistance. Calculated results indicated that a saturation point is reached beyond which further addition of more conductor length does not significantly reduce the earth grid resistance but incurs more economic implications. These were validated by earth grids designed using CDEGS where good agreement between the calculated and simulated results was found.
Enhancing Photoelectric Conversion Efficiency of Solar Panel by Water CoolingIJAPEJOURNAL
Photovoltaic solar cell generates electricity by receiving solar irradiance. The electrical efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) cell is adversely affected by the significant increase of cell operating temperature during absorption of solar radiation. This undesirable effect can be partially avoided by cooling the back side of the photovoltaic panel using water absorption sponge which was fixed on of PV panel and maintain wet condition by circulation of drop by drop water. The objective of the present work is to reduce the temperature of the solar cell in order to increase its electrical efficiency. Experiments were performed with and without water cooling. A linear trend between the efficiency and temperature was found. Without cooling, the temperature of the panel was high and solar cells were achieved an efficiency of 8–9%. However, when the panel was operated under water cooling condition, the temperature dropped maximally by 40C leading to an increase in efficiency of solar cells by 12%.
PMU-Based Transmission Line Parameter Identification at China Southern Power ...IJAPEJOURNAL
China Southern Power Grid Company (CSG) recently developed and implemented an online PMU-based transmission line (TL) parameter identification system (TPIS). Traditionally, TL parameters are calculated based on transmission tower geometries, conductor dimension, estimates of line length, conductor sags, etc. These parameters only approximate the effect of conductor sag and ignore the dependence of impedance parameters on temperature variation. Recent development in PMU technology has made it possible to calculate TL parameters accurately. The challenges are that such application requires highly accurate PMU data while the accuracy of PMU measurements under different working/system conditions can be uncertain. With a large number of PMUs widely installed in its system, CSG plans to improve and update the EMS database using the newly developed TPIS. TPIS provides an innovative yet practical problem formulation and solution for TL parameter identification. In addition, it proposes a new metric that can be used to determine the credibility of the calculated parameters, which is missing in the literature. This paper discusses the methodologies, challenges, as well as implementation issues noticed during the development of TPIS.
Investigation of Electric Field Distribution Inside 500/220 kV Transformation...IJAPEJOURNAL
This study depicts the electric field distributions inside a typical 500/220 kV open distribution substation under actual loading conditions and during different working conditions, Hot-Stick position and Bar-Hand position. The electric field is investigated for different workers heights of 1m, 1.5m and 1.8m above ground during normal working condition (Hot-Stick position) inside this substation. This in addition to assessment of the electric field at a height levels of 8m, 11m, 14m and 17m above ground as positions for live line maintenance under 220 kV Busbars, 500 kV Busbars, 220 kV Incoming and Outgoing feeders and 500 kV Incoming and Outgoing feeders respectively. In this study the simulation results of the electric field obtained using three dimensional (3D) computer model for existing typical high voltage transformation substation are compared with field values measured inside this typical substation and presented and discussed not only in the form of contour maps but also in the form 3D surface and wireframe maps. The simulation results are good matched and agreed with measured values. This in addition to the electric field will be tabulated and compared to international guidelines for personnel exposure to electric field. This study will serve for planning service works or for inspection of equipment inside high voltage (HV) power transformation substations.

Economic Load Dispatch aims at distributing the load demand between various generation stations in a system such that the total cost of generation is minimum. This is of vital importance since it not only reduces the operation cost of the generation utility but also helps in conserving fast dwindling energy resources. Modern day power systems are large interconnected systems with a large number of generator units each having its own cost curve. Ideally the cost function of a unit is a quadratic function of the power generated by the unit and the cost curve obtained is a smooth parabola. But in practice cost curves deviate from the idealised one due the several reasons such as valve point effect, multi fuel operation, existence of forbidden zones etc. and as such may not be continuous or analytic. Also for a large interconnected system it becomes essential to consider the effect of transmission losses. Conventional numerical method based approaches work well with systems without losses but for large systems with losses obtaining convergence becomes difficult as the number of iterations required as well as the computational time are very high. These methods fail entirely if non ideal cost curves are considered. Hence soft computing based methods become essential. Here Gravity Search Algorithm(GSA) has been used to for finding economic load scheduling in a multi generator system, given a certain load demand, and taking into consideration the effects of practical constraints on the idealised load curve. The algorithms for finding the economic scheduling has been written in Matlab and has provided satisfactory results based on the given tolerance values. Also the traditional and soft computing based approaches have been compared to demonstrate the advantages of one over the other.
Improving Light-Load Efficiency by Eliminating Interaction Effect in the Grid...IJAPEJOURNAL
A wind turbine equipped with doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) is used in wind power plant industry. This paper studies the maximum power extraction of DFIG via evaluation of state-space equations in closed loop control condition for improving light-load efficiency. The DFIG state-space equations have been considered in the form of a multi-input- multi output (MIMO) system. Also, the tracing table has been used to determine the speed which the generated power will be proportional to the maximum load. The tracing table input is the generator speed, and its output is the optimum active power that has been considered as the reference power of the active power control system of the convertor. A controller is presented for the tracing table and the extracted power is able to follow the reference power with minimum ripple. Then, the results are compared with the single-input and single-output (SISO) case, for the values up to 0.2 times of the rated load. In this paper, a generalization to nonlinear systems is proposed and applied to the motor dynamic, rotor model and stator model in DC motor equation. We argue that Ulam-Hyers stability concept is quite significant in design problems and in design analysis for the class of DC motor’s parameters. We prove the stability of nonlinear partial differential equation by using Banach’s contraction principle. As an application, the Ulam-Hyers stability of DC motor dynamics equations is investigated. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time Ulam-Hyers stability is considered from the applications point of view.
Implementation of Hybrid Generation Power System in PakistanIJAPEJOURNAL
A solar-wind hybrid power generation system has been presented here. The application based system illustrated in this paper is designed on the basis of the solar and wind data for Pakistan. The power generated by the system is intended for domestic use. The most common source of unconventional power in homes is battery based UPS (Uninterrupted power supply) inverter. The UPS inverter charges the battery with conventional grid power. This system will charge the battery of UPS inverter by using only wind and solar power, which will make the system cost effective and more reliable. The reason for using both solar and wind is that recent studies have proven that combined system can be more productive and consistent and other thing is that neither of them can be used for continuous power generation. In the system illustrated in this paper the solar-wind system provides power periodically which is controlled by electronic methods and a microcontroller is used to monitor the power from both the inputs. The switching action is provided from the microcontroller to the battery charging based on the power received from solar photovoltaic panel and wind generators. In this paper, an efficient system has been presented comprising of solar panel, wind generator, charge controller and charge storage unit (battery). Solar panel is selected as the main input and the wind resource will be used only in the absence of the solar photovoltaic (PV) output.

Recent developments in power electronics and semiconductor technology have lead to widespread use of power electronic converters in the power electronic systems. A number of Pulse width modulation (PWM) schemes are used to obtain variable voltage and frequency supply from a three-phase voltage source inverter. Among the different PWM techniques proposed for voltage fed inverters, the sinusoidal PWM technique has been popularly accepted. But there is an increasing trend of using space vector PWM (SVPWM) because of their easier digital realization, reduced harmonics, reduced switching losses and better dc bus utilization. This project focuses on step by step development of SVPWM technique. Simulation results are obtained using MATLAB/Simulink software for effectiveness of the study.
Comparison of FACTS Devices for Two Area Power System Stability Enhancement u...IJAPEJOURNAL
Modern Power Transmission networks are becoming increasingly stressed due to growing demand and restrictions on building new lines. Losing stability is one of the major threat of such a stressed system following a disturbance. Flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) devices are found to be very effective in a transmission network for better utilization of its existing facilities without sacrificing the desired stability margin. The static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and Static Var Compensator (SVC) are the shunt devices of the flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) family. When system voltage is low, STATCOM generates reactive power and when system voltage is high it absorbs reactive power whereas the Static Var compensator provides the fast acting dynamic compensation in case of severe faults. In this Paper, the performance of SVC is compared with the performance of STATCOM. Proposed controllers are implemented using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Simulation results indicate that the STATCOM controller installed with two machine systems provides better damping characteristics in rotor angle as compared to two machine system installed with SVC. Thus, transient stability enhancement of the two machine system installed with STATCOM is better than that installed with SVC.
Influence of Static VAR Compensator for Undervoltage Load Shedding to Avoid V...IJAPEJOURNAL
In the recent years, operation of power systems at lower stability margins has increased the importance of system protection methods that protect the system stability against various disturbances. Among these methods, the load shedding serves as an effective and last-resort tool to prevent system frequency/voltage instability. The analysis of recent blackouts suggests that voltage collapse and voltage-related problems are also important concerns in maintaining system stability. For this reason, voltage also needs to be taken into account in load shedding schemes. This paper considers both parameters in designing a load shedding scheme to determine the amount of load to be shed and its appropriate location .The amount of load to be shed from each bus is decided using the fixed step size method and it’s location has been identified by using voltage collapse proximity index method. SVC is shunt connected FACTS device used to improve the voltage profile of the system. In this paper impact of SVC on load shedding for IEEE 14 bus system has been presented and analyzed.

The high level electric field intensity produced by high voltage (HV) equipments inside 500/220 kV substations is harmful for the human (staff) health. Therefore the minimum health and safety requirements regarding the exposure of workers to the risk arising from electric fields produced inside these substations is still considered as a competitive topic for utility designers, world health organization (WHO) and biomedical field researchers. It is very important to have knowledge about levels distribution of electric field intensity within these high voltage substations as early stage in the process of substation design. This paper presents results of investigation 50Hz electric field intensity distribution inside 500/220 kV power transmission substations in Cairo, Egypt. This paper presents a method for assessment the distribution of 50HZ electric field intensity distribution inside this substation, this method of analysis is based on the charge simulation technique (CSM). This study will serve for planning service works or for inspection of equipment on HV power transmission substations.

Frequency dependence complete model is set up for describing the lightning transient behavior of the wind turbines (WTs).To get an appropriate wind turbine model, a high frequency models of surge arrester protecting the boost transformer, transformer and ground electrode soil ionization are implemented. The transient responses and Ground Potential Rise (GPR) can be obtained at different locations in the WTs and connected grid in the time domain as well as in the frequency domain using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). To check the validity of the model, Surge arresters protection level at different locations, at i.e. LV, MV and HV, is compared with ABB manufacture data sheet, Also a comparison has been made between simple and frequency dependence model of overall wind farm components using ATP/EMTP. This paper provides an accurate simulation of wind farm components under transient condition.

Ash Cooler Heat Recovery Under Energy Conservation SchemeIJAPEJOURNAL
A healthy fluidization state in circulating fluidized-bed combustion (CFBC) combustor is attributed to proper quantity of hot bed material (ash), which acts as a thermal fly-wheel. It receives & stores thermal energy from the burning of fuel (lignite) & distributes uniformly throughout the combustor & helps in maintaining a sustained combustion. The quantity of bed ash inside the combustor or size of the bed, depends upon boiler load & subsequently upon combustor temperature, lignite feed rate and ash % in lignite. As these parameters varies during process continuously, sometimes it becomes necessary to drain out the ash from the combustor. As & when differential pressure across the bed is increased from a justified level, draining of hot bed ash starts into Ash Coolers. Bed ash is drained at very high temperature of 850 oC & it also contains burning particles of lignite. This paper describes the heat recovery from bed ash, unloaded from the combustor into ash cooler, by pre-heating the condensate water of turbine cycle in a 125 MW CFB boiler of Surat Lignite Power Plant in India. The thermal performance of ash cooler was derived by doing a heat balance calculation based on the measured temperature of ash and cooling water with different load. From the heat balance calculation influence of ash temperature and ash amount on heat transfer coefficient is determined. Simulation is carried out around main turbine cycle indicates improved thermal economy of the unit, higher plant thermal efficiency, lower plant heat rate and reduce fuel consumption rate. Also simulation result shows that the heat transfer coefficient increase with ash amount and decreases with increase in ash temperature.
Harmonic Voltage Distortions in Power Systems Due to Non Linear LoadsIJAPEJOURNAL
Harmonics are found to have deleterious effects on power system equipments including transformers, capacitor banks, rotating machines, switchgears and protective relays. Transformers, motors and switchgears may experience increased losses and excessive heating. Shunt filters are effective in minimizing voltage distortions. This paper describes the voltage distortions generated by non linear loads. The harmonic specifications such as harmonic factor, characteristic harmonic and non-characteristic harmonic are considered while explaining the paper. ‘MiPower’ software is used to compute the harmonic distortions in a sample power system. Accurate harmonic models are established for a non linear load. To reduce the harmonic voltages impressed upon specific parts of the sample power system, passive filters are installed at two buses. With the implementation of a passive filter at the bus with non linear load, the harmonics are greatly reduced. For the specified power system, at all the buses the total harmonic distortion has been evaluated.

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

assessment are reported in [23]-[25]. There are also research efforts in using parallel processing [26]-[28] to
speed-up the time-domain simulations.
In online transient stability assessment, a selected list of contingencies for the current operating
condition needs to be evaluated as fast as possible before a fault or disturbance occurs in the system.
Therefore, the computation time is very critical. As indicated earlier, the time domain simulation is the most
accurate and reliable method for the assessment of transient stability since it can accommodate any degree of
modeling. Therefore, to avoid any uncertainty in modeling that may provide inaccurate results, time domain
simulation with detailed modeling of power system is the only choice. However, the transient stability
assessment by the full scale time domain simulation alone for one pass (all the contingencies in the selected
list which may be very long) with respect to the current operating condition cannot be done fast enough cost-
effectively. On the other hand, all the fast transient stability assessment methods (transient energy function
method, extended equal area criterion, etc.) are based on classical representation of power systems and hence
they are limited to short-term assessment i.e. first swing stability assessment [7]-[8], [29]. If a system is first
swing stable, the system damping, governor, etc. are expected to damp out the subsequent swings. Therefore,
first swing stable system is considered as stable system. However, to avoid any inaccuracy in the results due
to the modeling uncertainties arising from the use of classical representation of power systems, the doubtful
or critical contingencies need to be evaluated by the full scale time domain simulation. Therefore, fast
transient stability methods based on classical representation of power systems, combined with simple
dynamic equivalent reduction techniques like the one proposed in this paper can be used to evaluate each of
the contingencies in the selected list and identify the critical or doubtful ones which can then be evaluated by
the full scale time domain simulation. This process can reduce the total computation time for one pass
substantially since the fast assessment methods can be made even faster by coupling with them the simple
dynamic reductions. Therefore, even with the increased power of computers, the use of simple dynamic
reductions is very important in reducing the total computation time cost-effectively. Further reduction in the
total computation time can be achieved by parallel processing. There has been a study [30] on the different
capabilities (including the computation time) of six commercial online transient stability packages. Four of
these transient stability assessment tools use full scale time domain simulation along with either the transient
energy function method or the extended equal area criterion, one tool uses full scale time domain simulation
alone, and one tool uses the single machine equivalent method. Five tools have pre-filters to determine the
critical contingencies for analysis by the full scale time domain simulation, and they have the capabilities to
represent the dynamics of the external equivalent. Four tools use multiprocessor architecture to evaluate
multiple contingencies for the same operating condition. Each of the tools provides all modeling capabilities.
However, the one tool that uses the full scale time domain simulation alone and does not have pre-filter and
capabilities to represent the dynamics of the external equivalent, and does not use multiprocessor architecture
was not implemented at any utility company. Further details can be found in [30].
The coherency-based reductions are based on the simple principle that a group of coherent
generators (generators which swing together) can be lumped together to obtain an equivalent generator. A
number of methods [14]-[20], [31]-[34] have been suggested in the literature for the identification of coherent
generators. To apply a reduction technique, the power system is divided into two areas: an internal area or a
study area that is retained in the original form, and an external area containing a group of coherent generators
that is reduced. The reduction of the external area produces a dynamic equivalent which is a reduced model
consisting of an equivalent generator and a network.
For online applications, it is desirable to have a simple reduction method in which the parameters of
the dynamic equivalent can be determined with least possible measurement data taken from the external area.
Between the two important coherency-based aggregation techniques: New Inertial Aggregation and Slow
Coherency Aggregation [12], the former is the simplest aggregation method and requires less computation
compared to the latter. However, both the methods require measurement data taken at the original generators
of the external area to determine the parameters of the equivalent generator. To overcome the drawback of
the necessity of measurement data at the original generators, a coherency-based simple single-generator
dynamic equivalent was introduced in [35]. This equivalent is based on a new concept of decomposition of
generators and a two-level aggregation of generators. The preliminary results on its performance in terms of
accuracy were reported in [35]. With the knowledge of only the passive network model of the external area
and the total inertia constant of the original generators in this area, the parameters of this dynamic equivalent
can be determined from a set of real-time measurement data taken solely at a set of boundary buses which
separates the external area from the internal area. Measurement data at the generators of the external area is
not at all needed. This is an important feature of this equivalent. Another important feature is its simplicity
that is essential for online applications. The dynamic equivalent has a power system structure and hence it
can be represented physically. The use of this dynamic equivalent for coherent generators can greatly reduce
the power system model and hence the assessment time. Further reduction of the system model and hence the

computation time can be achieved by extending the use of this equivalent to less disturbed generators. The
results on a preliminary investigation on the degree of reduction that can be accomplished by using the
proposed equivalent for less disturbed generators, and on the critical clearing time of the resulting reduced or
aggregated system are very encouraging as has been reported in [36]. Very recently, an alternative and more
justified formulation has been proposed in [37] for the first-level aggregation of the dynamic equivalent of
[35]. Further, a thorough investigation was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed dynamic
equivalent when applied to coherent generators. Three different test systems were considered in this
investigation. These are the New England 39-bus 10-generator system, the IEEE 162-bus 17-generator
system and the IEEE 145-bus 50-generator system. Detailed performance results of this equivalent are
presented in [37]. The results clearly indicate excellent quality of the proposed equivalent. In the thorough
investigation that was conducted, the performance of the proposed dynamic equivalent aggregation has also
been compared with the new inertial aggregation in terms of accuracy. In this paper, these comparative
results are presented.
2. FORMATION OF THE PROPOSED DYNAMIC EQUIVALENT AND THE NEW INERTIAL
AGGREGATION
The formation of the proposed dynamic equivalent and the new inertial aggregated dynamic
equivalent is described here briefly. A power system of n generators is considered. Further, the classical
representation of power system is used.
A. Proposed Dynamic Equivalent Aggregation
The detail mathematical formulation of the proposed dynamic equivalent for a power system area
containing a group of coherent generators is described in [37]. Here, its formation and the determination of
different parameters are described briefly. The proposed equivalent is based on a new concept of
decomposition of generators and a two-level aggregation of generators. To form this equivalent, the power
system is partitioned into two areas: an internal area or a study area R that is retained in its original form, and
an external area C containing the coherent group of generators. The dynamic equivalent is formed for the
external area C on the assumption that the passive network model of this area and the total inertia constant of
all the generators in this area are known. The partitioning of the system is done in such a way that the two
areas are connected to each other only at a set of common buses, called boundary buses. This partitioning is
shown in Figure 1. For convenience, the boundary buses are considered as parts of the external area C. For
the dynamic equivalent to be valid for all the three system configurations (pre-fault, fault-on, and post-fault),
the fault is placed in the internal area R. Any line between the boundary buses and any load at these buses are
considered as parts of the internal area R. The mathematical formulation of this equivalent satisfies the swing
equations of the coherent group of generators as well as the nodal equations at the boundary buses. The
following sets of indices are defined for the external area C.

form the dynamic equivalent, external area network is reduced to its generator internal buses and the
boundary buses. The decomposition of the coherent generators into smaller generators and then the first level
aggregation of these smaller generators result in a multi-generator dynamic equivalent with one separate
equivalent generator connected to each individual boundary bus. So, the number of first-level equivalent
generators is equal to the number of boundary buses nB as shown in Figure 2. In this figure, Ij is the phasor
current injected into the external area at boundary bus j, Vj and yj are respectively the phasor voltage and shunt
admittance at boundary bus j, ymn is the admittance between two different boundary buses m and n, and yUj is the
admittance between boundary bus j and the corresponding first-level equivalent generator internal bus. Further,
MUj, PUj, EUj, δUj are respectively the inertia constant, input mechanical power, internal bus voltage magnitude,
and rotor angle of the first-level equivalent generator at boundary bus j. The second level aggregation of the first
level equivalent generators results in the single-generator dynamic equivalent of Figure 3. In this figure, MT,

B. New Inertial Aggregated Dynamic Equivalent
The details on this dynamic equivalent are available in [12]. Here, its formation is described briefly.
In this method, the dynamic equivalent for a coherent group of generators is formed at the internal buses of
these coherent generators. To form this equivalent for a group of coherent generators, the power system
network is partitioned into two areas: an internal area R and an external area C. This is shown in Figure 4. As
can be seen in this figure, the internal buses of the coherent generator group are the boundary buses which
separate the internal area from the external area. So, the external buses of the coherent generator group are in
the internal area. To form this dynamic equivalent for the external area, the internal buses of all the coherent
generators are connected to a fictitious bus through ideal phase shift transformers. Since the creation of two
additional buses in [12] is just to preserve the conventional power network representation and does not affect
the computation, these buses are not considered here. It can be seen in [12] that the phasor voltage of the
fictitious bus is same as the phasor voltage of the equivalent generator internal bus that is created through the
inclusion of these additional buses. Therefore, in this presentation, the fictitious bus is considered as the
internal bus of the equivalent generator. This dynamic equivalent is shown in Figure 5. In this figure, MT, PT,
ET, δT are respectively the inertia constant, input mechanical power, internal bus voltage magnitude, and rotor
angle of the equivalent generator. The internal bus voltage magnitude and the initial rotor angle of this equivalent

3. INVESTIGATIVE RESULTS ON THE COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PERFORMANCE
To compare the performance of the proposed dynamic equivalent with the new inertial aggregation
equivalent in terms of accuracy, both the methods were tested and evaluated on the New England 39-bus 10-
generator system, and the IEEE 162-bus 17-generator and 145-bus 50-generator systems. A number of three-
phase short circuit fault cases on each of the test systems were considered in this investigation. In each fault
case, the coherent generator groups were identified using the corresponding critically unstable trajectories of
the full system as obtained by the SBS transient stability simulation method up to a time when the system
exhibited instability. These trajectories were processed by the clustering algorithm of [14] to obtain the
coherent generator groups. Since a good-quality dynamic equivalent provides approximately the full (original
or unreduced) system trajectories, a single measure of the performance of any dynamic equivalent in terms of
its accuracy is the difference (error) between the trajectories of the aggregated (reduced) system and the full
system. Therefore, the performance of each of the methods in terms of its accuracy was evaluated by
comparing the trajectories of the retained generators in the aggregated system with those in the full system in
terms of errors (differences). To obtain the aggregated system corresponding to a particular aggregation
method for a fault case, each of the coherent generator groups identified in that fault case was replaced by its
respective dynamic equivalent. All the transient stability simulations in this investigation were carried out
using a time step-size of 0.01 s. The results of the comparative study on the accuracy that was conducted on
the three test systems are presented here. Table 1 shows the results on the New England 39-bus 10-generator

whereσ is the average absolute error, δa and δf are respectively the rotor angles in the aggregated
system and the full system in synchronous frame, and T is the period of study. This average absolute error
was computed over a study period equal to or a little greater than the length of time taken by the critically
unstable full system to actually exhibit instability. Further, this error was computed for two different fault
clearing times with the lower one referring to the critically unstable condition of the full system. The other
fault clearing time was at least 20% higher than the lower one. In all the tables, column 2 shows the number
of generators in each coherent group along with the coherency tolerance chosen. Further, the average
absolute errors in the tables are shown in terms of the minimum and maximum values among the average
absolute errors of all the retained generators. In two fault cases of the New England System, the results are
also shown with varying coherency tolerances. However, the results on the accuracy of the proposed
aggregation method as shown in the tables are presented in [37]. They are repeated here for the purpose of
comparison of the two aggregation methods. It can be seen from the tables that the errors and hence the
accuracy of the two methods are similar.

In addition, each of the two aggregation methods was investigated by comparing its respective

aggregated system with the full system in terms of the following aspects: (a) critical clearing time range, (b)
the generator that looses synchronism first corresponding to a fault clearing time for which the full system
exhibits critically unstable condition, and (c) the generator that has the highest maximum absolute first swing
corresponding to a fault clearing time for which the full system exhibits critically stable condition. All these
results were obtained using COA frame of reference. In each of the fault cases presented here, the results on the
mentioned aspects obtained by both the aggregation methods were found to be same as those of the full system.
However, it is important to note that the errors between aggregated system trajectories and full system
trajectories of the retained generators are also measures of the results on the mentioned aspects. This means that
if the errors are high, then the results on the indicated aspects obtained by an aggregation method will be different
from those of the full system. Regarding the computation speed, the author believes that the computation time by
both the aggregation methods will be similar. So this aspect has not been considered in the investigation.
4. CONCLUSION
The performance of a proposed coherency-based simple dynamic equivalent aggregation method
has been compared with the new inertial aggregation method in terms of accuracy. Three test systems that
were considered in this study are the New England 39-bus 10-generator system, and the IEEE 162-bus 17-
generator and 145-bus 50-generator systems. The comparative performance results obtained in this
investigation have been presented here. The results clearly indicate that the accuracy of the proposed
dynamic equivalent aggregation method is similar to that of the new inertial aggregation method. However,
like any other dynamic equivalent aggregation, the accuracy of results by the proposed dynamic equivalent
depends on the coherency tolerance. The proposed dynamic equivalent is expected to be useful in online
applications.

BIOGRAPHY OF AUTHORS
Abdul Malek Miah received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Bangladesh University of
Engineering and Technology in 1969 and 1981, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the
Wayne State University, Michigan, USA, in 1992. He worked in industries for several years. He was also with the faculty
of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. He joined the South Carolina State University in 1990 and is
currently a Professor of Electrical Engineering Technology.
