8. Tucker Nichols used lots of cut paper
to make the art. This is called collage.

9. TPS – Why do you think Tucker Nichols
chose to make the art for This Bridge Will
Not Be Gray as a collage?

10. TPS – What important things do you
observe about the Golden Gate Bridge?

11. Photographic images and illustrations that
show mostly land or sea are landscapes or
seascapes.
Are pictures and illustrations of the Golden Gate Bridge landscapes or
seascapes? Why do you think this?

12. We are going to make a collage of the
Golden Gate Bridge!

13. 1 – Draw a curvy line in pencil

14. 2 – Draw a straight, horizontal, line in
pencil

15. 3 – Draw a slightly curvy, horizontal,
line in pencil

16. 4 – Color the bottom part with blue oil
pastel. This will the bay water.

17. 5 – Smear the blue by coloring over it
with white oil pastel. This will make
the water look more realistic.

18. 6 – Pick a dark or light green. Color the
triangle with green you pick. This will
be one side of the bay.

19. 7 – Use the other shade of green to
color the other side of the bay.

20. 8 – Draw and color some white, fluffy,
clouds in the sky with the white oil
pastel.

21. 9 – use the green oil pastels to create
texture on the land (I made lines; you
can make any simple shape you like)

22. 10 – Hand out long, pre-cut, orange
paper strips to students

23. 11 – Place strips on your paper like
this; DO NOT glue yet!

24. 12 – Mark these places on the strips in
pencil. Note one set is higher than the
other!

25. 13 – Cut the strips and glue them in place.
Note – it is easier to put the glue on the
blue paper and then stick on the strips!

26. 14 – Cut 4 small strips and glue them
on (you might have to trim them to
make them fit)

27. 15 – Add another 4 small strips and 1
large strip for the driving part of the
bridge

28. 16 – Cut one long strip in ½, hot-dog
style. Glue the 2 skinny pieces down
diagonally

29. 17 – Cut another long piece in ½ hot
dog style. Glue the 2 skinny pieces
down diagonally

30. 18 – Use scratch paper and/or crayons
to add “extras” to make the artwork
your own!
