This document summarizes a paper presented at the International Forum on City Planning in Singapore that discusses housing and economic issues in Melbourne, Australia arising from urban sprawl and the lack of affordable housing near jobs. The paper examines how economic shifts have led to the concentration of knowledge-intensive jobs in central areas, driving up housing costs and limiting access to opportunities for those living farther out. It proposes that compact city and transit-oriented development models could help improve connectivity between housing, jobs, and services to address inequities.
