The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization that provides significant help to those in need. The organization is a branch of the
International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The organization's initial goals were to provide humanitarian efforts and other relief

In order to respond to these devastating events and provide aid to those left in the aftermath, humanitarian relief organizations have to quickly prepare
and implement large–scale relief activities, with only a short period of time to do so (Lassiter et al., 2015).
To do this efficiently, relief organizations look to the volunteer base. However, because of the limited resources available after natural disasters and the
unstable, often dangerous conditions in affected areas, volunteer management is a difficult problem (Lassiter et al., 2015). Moreover, often times due
to the large–scale nature of these disasters, relief organizations need to train additional, otherwise unqualified volunteers in order to utilize them in the
various tasks of their relief effort, further complicating an already complex relief coordination system (Lassiter et al., 2015).

In health care spending, Haiti ranks last in the western hemisphere, spending only US$83 per capita annually on health care. An even more striking

Introduction Throughout the semester, I have been able to volunteer for the American Red Cross Disaster Services Team. This has been one of the
most beneficial volunteer opportunities that I have ever accomplished. As an American Red Cross of Georgia Major Gift Officer, this volunteer
experience allowed me to gain knowledge in a department that serves as the backbone of the American Red Cross. As a nonprofit fundraiser, it is
difficult to truly see the mission that your team raises money for every single day. Fundraisers at the American Red Cross are trained as "sales

The Haiti earthquake and health care Health care can bring people together when there is equal access, or divide people when there is not. On January
12, 2010, Haiti was hit by an magnitude–7.0 earthquake. More than half a million people dies or was injured, and approximately 2 million people were
displayed from their homes. Overcrowded and poor living conditions increased Haitians risk for communicable diseases. The earthquake destroyed
most government buildings, schools, homes, hospitals, and transportation and communication infrastructure in the western part of the country,
including the capital Port–au–Prince and much of the southeastern part of the country. This earthquake that struck Haiti caused an estimated 222,570
deaths and 300,000 injuries. In impoverished countries, like Haiti analyzing the causes of deaths and injuries post–disaster can help countries better
prepare for disasters in the future. In the wake of the earthquake the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)
mobilized the biggest single–country emergency mounted. Deployments included field hospitals, one of which was a specially designed rapid response
mobile and light hospital with 30 expatriate staff. This was set up in Port–au–Prince at the main

Mobile devices, social media, and mapping technologies are here to stay. We are becoming a very connected world through our modern technologies
and the results are amazing when they are involved with humanitarian aid. Haiti is an example where humanitarian aid changed and improved because
of mobile devices and modern technology. Through the use of SMS text and social media, information stays where it is needed in the community.
Haiti's earthquake proved the importance of mobile devices and information staying in the community. People used mobile devices to find love ones,
let aid workers know where they were buried, and shared important data about happenings in Port–au–Prince and the country. Outside volunteers
