WHAT IS A COMMUNITY
 The word “Community” derives from the old French comunete which
means PUBLIC SPIRIT
 DAVID M. CHAVIS & KIE LEE- The idea of community connects with
each other as it describes an experience among human.
 Many scholars view community as group of people who share
something in common. Among sociologist community manifest
shared attributes of the people in it and by the strength of the the
connection among them. You need a bunch of people who are alike
in some way, who feel some sense of belonging and interpersonal
connection.
 A community is a social unit (as a group of living things) which
commonality such as norms, religion, values, customs or identity.
Geographical- Eg. Country, Village and Towns
Large group affiliation such as: national communities, international
communities and virtual communities.
ROLE OF THE COMMUNITY
Community consultation
Joint planning
Joint delivery and community led-activities
Joint design
APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCES- These are social science disciplines
professions and occupation that seeks to use basic social science
research to improve daily life communities, organizations and persons.
SOCIAL SCIENCE CAREERS
 Advice worker- provide information advice and guidance on the
range of topics. These topics may include house, employment,
welfare, education, finance and law
Civil service career-delivers public services according to government
policies. These are large number of different departments and huge
variety of different roles.
Community development worker- working in communities and laising
with different agencies to bring about change and improvements.
Some work may be targeted towards certain groups of people e.g.
the unemployed or homeless.
Equality and diversity officer- promote diversity and work to ensure
that people are treated fairly and not discriminated against for
characteristics including race, gender age or disablility.
 Housing officer- work for local authorities or housing associations to
manage rented accommodation including solving problem raise by
tenants, organizing maintenance allocating properties and dealing
with payment issues.
Human Resource officers- Human resource officers aim to ensure
that organizations have a skilled and efficient workforce.
 Legal careers- providing legal services to clients.
Local government careers- developing policies and delivering local
services. These are huge variety of roles within local government
including roles in social care, housing and education.
Police officer-Work to make communities safer by maintaining the
law and preventing crime.
 Psychologist-these are the range of different psychologist roles but
broadly they help clients to improve their psychological being.
TYPES OF COMMUNITY
 Formal group- is from when people come together to accomplish
specific goals and objectives.
Informal group- is form when two or more people come together to
accomplish a specific task which is mainly socially geared.
 Urban area- is a region surrounding a city. An area with high desity
of population.
 Rural area- is an open swath of land that has few homes .
Global community- are the people or nations of the world,
considered as being closely connected by modern
telecommunications and as being economically, socially and
politically independent.
FIVE COMMON FEATURES OF COMMUNITY
 Interest- communities of people who share the same interest of
passion.
 Action- communities of people trying to bring about change.
 Place- communities of people brought together by geographic
boundaries.
 Practice- communities of people in the same profession or undertake
the same activities.
 Circumstance- communities of people brought together by external
events/situation.
COMMUNITY DYNAMICS
 It is the process of change and development in the communities of
all living organism including plants, microorganism, small and large
creatures, of every sort.
Community Action- is any activity that increases the understanding,
engagement and empowerment of communities in the design
delivery of local services.
WHAT IS SOCIAL SCIENCE
 It is the study of society and relationships among individuals within
those societies. It includes

WHAT IS SOCIAL SCIENCE PERSPECTIVE
• Social science perspective- is viewing life through the tinted
spectacles of the pass of as science by bullying academics. In sad
truth, they cannot predict wars, social changes, elections or anything
else. They call them scientist because they explain the world in
complex language and invented word that they pretend to
understand. In reality they have no science because means to be
able to predict without error or to manipulate and create phenomena
• What is anthropology- Anthropology is the study of what makes as
human. Anthropologist take a broad approach in understanding the
different aspects of human experiences which we call holism. They
consider the past through archeology to see human lives a thousand
of years ago and what was important to them. They considered what
make our biological bodies, genetics, bones, diet & health.
• ANTHROPOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE- focuses on the study of the full
scope of human diversity and application of the knowledge to help
people of different backgrounds. These are culture, cultural
relativism, field work, human diversity, holism, bio-cultural focus.
• Sociological perspective- involves the investigation of the problem on
micro and macro levels. In micro levels sociology studies individuals
behave in social situation at work, at play, at home or in school.

  • 9. WHAT IS SOCIAL SCIENCE PERSPECTIVE • Social science perspective- is viewing life through the tinted spectacles of the pass of as science by bullying academics. In sad truth, they cannot predict wars, social changes, elections or anything else. They call them scientist because they explain the world in complex language and invented word that they pretend to understand. In reality they have no science because means to be able to predict without error or to manipulate and create phenomena • What is anthropology- Anthropology is the study of what makes as human. Anthropologist take a broad approach in understanding the different aspects of human experiences which we call holism. They consider the past through archeology to see human lives a thousand of years ago and what was important to them. They considered what make our biological bodies, genetics, bones, diet & health.
  • 10. • ANTHROPOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE- focuses on the study of the full scope of human diversity and application of the knowledge to help people of different backgrounds. These are culture, cultural relativism, field work, human diversity, holism, bio-cultural focus. • Sociological perspective- involves the investigation of the problem on micro and macro levels. In micro levels sociology studies individuals behave in social situation at work, at play, at home or in school.
