Social Work and Psychology share the same
outcome i.e. recognizing and treating mental
illness and empowering individuals in order to
improve their lives
WHAT IS SOCIAL WORK?
Social Work is the professional practice of
delivery Social Services
It deals with both person and environment

human well-being and help meet the basic
needs of people, with particular attention to the
needs and empowerment of people who are
vulnerable, oppressed and living in poverty
(NASW Code of Ethics)
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
SOCIAL WORK AND SOCIAL WELFARE
Both terms came into existence early in the first half of 20th century
Social Work is carried out by trained individuals and they offer a
wide range of services and work under different settings
Social Welfare refers to a wide range of activities and services by
volunteers, non-profit organizations and governmental
organizations. Help provided to persons in need, activities and
resources to enhance or promote the wellbeing of individuals,
families and larger societies usually provided by governmental
programs or private agencies
They aim to eliminate or reduce social problems and aid in social
development as well as improve peoples lives.
HISTORY IN SOCIAL WORK
Religious beliefs improvised deep compassion, firm conviction and
a strong sense of justice
These groups have provided significant labour and financial
support
Faith background led the foundation of the movement as abolition,
temperance, establishment of settlement houses
Social Workers assisted in childcare, poor and improving social
welfare systems
It gradually progressed through Industrial Revolution 1760
to 1840 and two World Wars as there was large influx of
immigrants, rapid industrial and urban growth, low
wages, slum housing, diseases and child labour
It demanded greater public health efforts
• Mental Health Movement
• Settlement House Movement
Impact of Great Depression 1929–1939
• Social Security Act
• Great Society
Social Security Act:
National Systems of oldage, insurance for retires workers,
benefits for victims of accidents, unemployment issues,
dependant mothers and children, blind and handicapped
Great Society:
It was a set of domestic programs. Main goal was to eliminate
poverty and racial discrimination by more spending programs
such as education, medical care, urban/rural programs,
transportation
TIMELINE OF HISTORY OF SOCIAL WORK

government provision for poor residing in the local parisons
 Thomas Chalmers in Scotland started personalised involvement with
the poor
 Charity Organization Society (COS) provided with individual
assessment, coordinated service plan and follow up
 Mary Richmond - COS leader, Social Diagnosis, Social Casework
 Settlement House Movement
 Jane Addams, Founder of Hull House
 First schools of Social Work started in early 1900s
 Emphasis on the casework; group work (late 1930s)

 Frances Feldman (1912-2008)
 Ida B.(1862-1931)
 Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948)

PURPOSES OF SOCIAL WORK PROFESSION
 Enhance human wellbeing and alleviate social injustice
 Enhance social functioning and interactions of individuals,
families, groups, organizations and communities
 Formulate and implement social policies, services, and
programs that meet basic human needs and develop human
capacities
 Advocate for policies, services, resources that promote social
and economic justice
 Develop and use research, knowledge and skills that advance
social work practice
 Develop and apply practice in the context of diverse cultures
FUNCTIONS OF SOCIAL WORK
These activities can be grouped into three
functions
• Restoration of impaired capacity.
• Provision of individual and social resources.
• Prevention of social dysfunction.
The basic functions of social work are
intertwined and interdependent.
i. The rehabilitative aspect might be helping the one child to
psychologically accept and live with the hearing aid and supporting the
other child as he or she adjusts to the new foster home.
ii. Provision of resources, social and individual, for more effective social
functioning may be subdivided into: developmental and educational.
a. The developmental aspects are designed to further the effectiveness
of existing social resources or to bring to full flower personal capacity
for more effective social interaction.
• An example would be the services of a Family Service Society that help
Mr. and Mrs. X, through individual and conjoint interviews, to
understand each other better and to open the channels of meaningful
communication between them.
b. The educational spectrum is designed to acquaint the public with
specific conditions and needs for new or changing social
resources. Again, this could be illustrated by public talks given by
staff members of a Family Service Society, in which counseling
services are described as a resource in alleviating marriage and
family problems.
iii. The third function, prevention of social dysfunction, involves early
discovery, control, and elimination of conditions and situations that
potentially could hamper effective social functioning.
Two main divisions
Prevention of problems in the area of interaction between individuals
and
groups the prevention of social ills.
• Premarital counseling is an example of prevention. That
through this process couples will be able to anticipate possible
difficulties in marital interaction.
Prevention of social ills ordinarily falls within the area of
community organization.
• An example would be a community developing a youth center
for at risk youths for the prevention of gang violence.
SOCIAL WORK IS AN ART OR SCIENCE?
Social work is an art it requires great skills
to understand people and to help them to help themselves.

FUTURE PROSPECTS
o Trained social workers in foreign countries would

will likely grow and expand its services, helping more
