Building a search engine for exposures in disease Chirag Patel
This document proposes building a search engine to discover environmental and phenotypic factors associated with disease and health, analogous to genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for genes. It notes that while over 2400 GWAS have identified genetic variants associated with traits, little is known about environmental influences, which could account for up to 50% of phenotypic variability. The author argues that high-throughput methods are needed to measure the "exposome" of environmental exposures people experience and relate it to health outcomes, in order to discover major environmental causes of disease.
This document discusses the concepts and principles of community health nursing. It defines community health nursing as applying nursing skills, public health, and social assistance through organized community efforts to promote health, prevent disease, and ensure access to healthcare. This document discusses several tools used in family assessment:
1) A genogram is used to visualize family relationships and inheritance patterns of illnesses. It records family members, relationships, and significant dates.
2) The APGAR tool evaluates a family's adaptation, partnership, growth, affection, and ability to resolve conflicts. Scores of 8-10 indicate a highly functional family.
3) A family map depicts the structure of a family through boundaries, alliances and coalitions between members. It analyzes processes like enmeshment over time.
4) A lifeline charts a family's history and significant events that could impact a patient's health.

This document discusses structural racialization and how racial disparities persist even as explicit racist attitudes and laws have declined. It argues that seemingly neutral policies and institutions can reproduce racial inequalities without racial intent. It provides examples of persistent racial disparities in areas like unemployment, incarceration, income, wealth, and concentrated poverty. It advocates using a structural perspective and systems thinking to understand how disparate impacts accumulate over time through mutually reinforcing relationships between policies, institutions, and spatial aspects of opportunity. Transformational change is needed that addresses implicit biases and links individual and community fates rather than viewing them in isolation.

The Latino Vote in Virginia by Dr. Xavier Medina Vidalholaedgar
Dr. Xavier Medina Vidal presented at VACOLAO VACOLAO's Panel Discussion on the Growing Impact of the Latino Vote in Virginia.
The Latino community is one of the fastest growing populations in Virginia that is helping to reshape the political landscape of the Commonwealth. Access to health care (Closing the Gap) and immigration related issues such as in-state tuition for undocumented students, issues important to the Latino community, loomed large in the last year race and brought many Latino voters to the polls. The impact of the Latino vote in Virginia will likely increase as Latino voters are also on average younger than any other voting group and the impact of their growing political power will be felt for many years to come.

1) The cultural sector generates $1.3 billion in annual expenditures and $158 million in tax revenue, supporting 19,000 jobs and 24,000 volunteers.
2) Ten key findings from further research include that personal arts practice is a gateway to engagement, families play a key role, and marketing must be multi-channel.
3) There are also five next steps proposed, including continuing research, developing new funding resources, publicizing findings, and integrating arts into civic planning.
1) The study found that 24.3% of deaths in Virginia from 1990 to 2006 could have been prevented if the entire state had the same mortality rates as the most affluent areas. This represents over 220,000 avertable deaths.
2) The proportion of avertable deaths was highest in rural, non-metro areas and areas with lower population density and household income. Counties with the highest percentages of avertable deaths included Charles City, Prince George, and Dinwiddie Counties.
3) Improving social conditions like income and education across Virginia could enable more areas to achieve the health advantages and lower mortality rates seen in northern Virginia.
