3 verb tenses used 80% of the
time
Present simple
Simple past
Present perfect
 All 3 forms are commonly used in the
passive voice, especially in academic
writing
Using the Present Simple
 To frame your paper
To describe what you already know
(introductions)
To describe what you now know/ what
research is needed (conclusions)
 To make general statements, conclusions,
interpretations
“The data suggest…”
“The research shows…”
Using the Present Simple
 To introduce evidence
 To show strong agreement with
an idea/theory from a previous
paper
“Smith suggests that…”
“Jones claims that…”
Using the Simple Past
 To introduce other people’s research into
your writing
Used when describing one specific
study done by a specific person
 To describe methods that you used to
conduct an experiment
Using the Present Perfect
 It refers to previous research
 It implies that the result of the research is still
true today
 Use this verb tense when:
 The subject is general and doesn’t refer to a
specific person (in this situation, sometimes the
present simple can also be used)
 Introducing a new topic
 Focusing on a connection between the past and
the present
Using the Present Perfect
 Use this verb tense when:
To tell the history of your idea
Describe the results of your
research
To draw conclusions
